De La Hoya will defend his NABF and NABO Super Bantamweight Titles against Jose “Sugar” Salgado (35-4-2, 28 KOs) of Cozumel, Mexico in the 10-round main event.

I’m going to show that I’m ready for a world title shot. He’s been saying a few things about me, but he just wants me to lose my focus. He can talk all he wants, but I’ll do my talking in the ring. All I have to say is that I’m going to give a great fight. Winning this fight, I want to face any champion who will give me the opportunity. But they just have to know what they will lose their title fighting me.”

World Boxing Organization [WBO] super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramírez’s (37-0, 25 KOs) next defence will be in Oklahoma on June 30 against the hard-hitting Roamer Alexis Angulo (23-0, 20 KOs) of Colombia. Angulo, trained by respected Cuban coach Pedro Díaz, is based out of Miami and, although he is not well known on the boxing landscape, enters the bout with a high knock out ratio.

Speaking from his training camp in Los Angeles, California, Ramírez told BoxingScene.com that he is preparing for the encounter as he would for any other.

“I know that he’s a strong fighter, a hard puncher, he has a good record and as always we are preparing 100% for this to come out with the win,” he assured.

“He’s coming to take my belt away from me so that’s why I train so hard. I have to train harder than my opponents.”

Last February, Gilberto retained his WBO title against the previously unbeaten Habib Ahmed in what was a convincing display culminating in a sixth-round stoppage by the referee after Ahmed’s corner threw in the towel.

“I was happy to win so dominantly, and I hope this next one will be no different. I want to win convincingly.”

‘Zurdo’, originally from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico now trains in Los Angeles for his fights and finds the base there to be of great benefit.

“We come and go really,” he explained.

“We train in Los Angeles but of course my family is back in Mazatlán so we’ll go back there for a bit and then return to training camp after to prepare for fights. The sparring is much better in Los Angeles, I can concentrate better here, away from the distractions of home.”

The super middleweight division seems to be catching fire again lately, particularly with the likes of David Benavidez and Jose Uzcátegui making a name for themselves in the United States as well as the British contingent of 168lbs fighters. When asked about International Boxing Federation [IBF] champion James DeGale, Ramírez admitted that he sees some slippage in the Londoner.

“He seems to have dipped a little bit, he would be a good rival but I believe I have the skills to beat him and anyone else in my division. I want to show that I am the best at super middleweight. I saw his last fight, it was very close but I think he did deserve the win. I’d like to fight him, even go over to England if he wanted the fight. I’d love to fight in England and take his belt off him.

“I could also fight the winner of George Groves and Callum Smith from the tournament, but I think Callum Smith would be a more interesting fight. For me he’s the favourite to win the series and beat Groves. He’s tall like myself and he’s skilful so it would be a good fight against him too.”

The Mexican-based Venezuelan, José ‘Bolivita’ Uzcategui is another potential opponent for Ramirez. Indeed, he also trains at times in California, in the San Diego area.

“I have seen that Uzcátegui also trains in California, I have followed him a bit and I think soon he will be another opponent of mine. The division is good right now and there’s a lot of good fighters, I just want to show that I’m the best out of them and be a pound-for-pound fighter. I also know David Benavidez quite well, we’ve done some sparring together, we’ve been in the gym together and it would be a very competitive fight with him.”

Although we conducted the interview in Gilberto’s native Spanish, the 26-year-old has made huge strides in learning English and now regularly gives interviews on television in English, something he believes can help grow his fanbase.

“Speaking English opens you up to another type of market, I like communicating with people and they can appreciate and hear me with my own words. We’re in another country and English is the main language so why not speak it? It can only help you as a person too.”

WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (29-0, 25 KOs) is looking forward to a mandatory showdown with former champion Liam Smith (26-1-1, 14 KOs) of the UK.

Munguia captured the title earlier this month, with a four round thrashing of Sadam Ali in Verona, New York. The young Mexican puncher sent Ali down four times before the contest was waved off.

Smith previously held the WBO title – until he lost the belt to Canelo Alvarez in September 2016. Since then, he’s won three fights including a final eliminator against Liam Williams.

According to Munguia, the fight is being targeted for two dates in the month of July.

“We are going to fight on July 21 or 28. I already started running this week, I have a good rhythm to fight and I do not want to waste it. I think that next week we will return to the gym in a stronger way, this week has been crazy,” Munguia told ESPN Deportes.

“Regarding Liam Smith, I feel he is a fighter who does not have a big name, but he is a very experienced fighter who fought with the best of the division, including Canelo Alvarez. But I think I have what it takes to beat him. I always put in a good preparation physical and mentally. I’m sure that it will be a great fight.”

Munguia is hoping to emulate the success of his two Mexican idols, Julio Cesar Chavez and Juan Manuel Marquez.

“Julio Cesar Chavez, I love his way of fighting, his aggressiveness, he did not stop throwing punches for the entire three minutes of each round, and for the entire twelve rounds of the fight. Marquez is also a good counter-puncher, and there are many more. But I want to continue my journey in my own way, so that someday the children are saying that they want to be like me,” Munguia said.

Oscar Valdez’s victory over Scott Quigg on March 10th on a rainy night at the StubHub Center came at quite a cost.

Valdez – facing a Quigg who didn’t even try and make the featherweight limit and came in heavy and thus ineligible to win the WBO featherweight title – suffered a fractured jaw, which hospitalized him for a few days after the fight.

When asked how his fighter was doing, manager Frank Espinoza told BoxingScene.com – “Since his fight he’s been back to the doctor four times in two-and-a-half months. His progress has come along well. The wire that was in his jaw has been removed so he’s now able to eat solid food. We have periodic checks with the doctor. He’ll be back there in June for another check-up.”

It’s unclear if Valdez (the reigning WBO 126-pound titlist) will return to the ring in 2018.

“That’s solely up to the doctors discretion, it’s his call,” said Espinoza, who makes it clear that Valdez’s return to the ring will not be handled recklessly.

“Listen, he’s had 36 hard, tough rounds and now after suffering a serious injury to his jaw, I have a responsibility to my client to do what’s right for him and his long-term future. He’s the type of guy that will literally fight anybody – as he showed back in March – and there will be plenty of time to make the big fights in the featherweight division but for the time being we will take the appropriate fights to bring Oscar back.”

The 27-year old Valdez (24-0, 19 KO’s) won the WBO strap in the summer of 2016 by blasting out Matias Rueda in two rounds and has made three successful title defenses.

“Oscar will be back stronger and better than ever and he’ll be involved in some of the best fights in the division but again, there will be a process in getting there. That’s my job as a manager to do what’s in his best interest,” stated Espinoza.

Super middleweight world champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez will make the fourth defence of his WBO belt against the hard-hitting Roamer Alexis Angulo, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Taking place at the home of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder at Chesapeake Energy Arena on June 30th, 26-year-old Ramirez will face his third unbeaten challenger in a row as he defends his crown against the formidable Colombian Angulo.

Ramirez (37-0, 25 KOs), from Mazatlán, Mexico, became the first Mexican-born super middleweight champion when he shut out three-time world champion Arthur Abraham in 2016.

He has since gone on to beat Ukrainian Max Bursak, before a nip-and-tuck battle against No. 1 contender Jesse ‘Hollywood’ Hart, ultimately prevailing by unanimous decision.

In his last bout in February of this year Ramirez scored the first stoppage of his championship reign with a sixth-round TKO over Habib Ahmed.

His next challenge now comes against Angulo (23-0, 20 KOs), who has won his last five bouts by knockout, most recently winning the WBO Latino belt with a first-round knockout over Evert Bravo.

Con más de ocho semanas de intensa preparación el sólido prospecto tijuanense Jaime Munguía cerró ayer las sesiones de sparrings con la prueba de los 12 rounds para su combate del sábado 12 de mayo en Verona, Nueva York contra el campeón mundial Superwelter WBO Sadam Alí y afirma estar más que listo para dar coronarse campeón.

Munguía hizo una preparación de 4 semanas en su natal Tijuana y las últimas cuatro en Azusa, California con el entrenador Robert Alcazar.

Munguía (28-0-0, 24 Ko’s) y Ali (26-1-0, 14 Ko’s) chocarán en el combate estelar de la velada que Golden Boy Promotions, en asociación con Promociones Zanfer, montará en el Turning Stone Resort & Casino de Verona, Nueva York y transmitirá HBO al mundo y en México Azteca 7, La Casa del Boxeo transmitirá a todo el país. 

El nacido en Tijuana, de apenas 21 años de edad, reemplazará a Liam “Beefy” Smith, ya que estaba programado para combatir ante Ali pero debido a complicaciones de salud a tan sólo tres semanas de la pelea abandonó el combate. 

El poco tiempo con el que se le avisó a Munguía Escobedo de esta oportunidad titular no será un problema para él, pues tenía programado pelear en la cartelera #GGGMartirosyan. 

“Llegaré en perfectas condiciones ya que iba a pelear el sábado en la función de Golovkin y traigo una gran  preparación. Estoy muy contento y motivado por esta oportunidad y con muchas ganas de regalarle otro campeonato a México”, comentó Munguía, quien hizo   a tope los 12 rounds con tres sparrings distintos. 

Para esta pelea Munguía se hizo de los servicios del experimentado entrenador Robert Alcazar, quien ha estado en la esquina de grandes peleadores como lo son Oscar De La Hoya, Jessie Vargas, Edwin Valero, entre otros. 

“Me he acoplado muy bien con Robert, he aprendido bastante, a mí siempre me ha gustado trabajar fuerte y el me exige mucho, estoy muy a gusto, contento y satisfecho con la preparación con la que llegaremos mi entrenador y yo”, aseguró el de Tijuana y agregó que en los siguientes días continuará con sus corridas, ejercicios de soltura y aparatos.

¨Cerramos fuerte, explosivos y con una excelente condición física en los siguientes días continuar con mis rutinas de corrida y de gimnasio, sin sparrings, lo del peso estamos en tiempo y forma sin preocupación alguna¨ señaló el joven retador.

 Esta será la segunda presentación de Munguía en los Estados Unidos, el pasado mes de diciembre debutó en ese país cuando derrotó por nocaut técnico a Paul Valenzuela Jr. en Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ali intentará defender con éxito por primera ocasión su cinturón después de arrebatárselo al puertorriqueño Miguel Cotto tras vencerlo por decisión unánime, también en diciembre en Nueva York.

WBO#1 minimum Moises Calleros (25-6-1, 14 KOs) from Mexico arrived yesterday (Monday) in Kumamoto City, Japan, where he will dispute the interim WBO 105-pound championship with local prospect Tatsuya Fukuhara (18-4-6, 7 KOs) on this coming Sunday.

In the begining, the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) won’t accept an Interim Title bout to take place here in Japan, but the legitimate WBO champ Katsunari Takayama had his notorious scar tissues operated last year and needs more time for recovery, so the Calleros-Fukuhara interim title bout received a special permission of the JBC.

The lefty fighter from Japan, Fukuhara acquired the vacant national 105-pound belt by defeating Hiroya Yamamoto in November 2015 and kept his belt three times by beating Takumi Sakae (W10), Genki Hanai (TKO7) and being held to a technical draw with veteran Shin Ono.

Calleros, with the same age as Fukuhara at 27, recently scored five victories in a row since his KO defeat at the hand of Samuel Gutierrez in 2014. The winner is supposed to have a long-anticipated shot at the full champ Takayama upon his recuperation, the WBO has put the time of a 180 days for the Interim Champion faces the WBO Minimumweight Champion Katsunari Takayama.

Como parte del programa “Niños libres de drogas” que se han puesto en marcha en varios países, la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) entregó este jueves donativos a dos casas hogar en el Estado de México y en la Ciudad de México.

Rafael López Santos, miembro del Comité Ejecutivo Mundial de la OMB y en representación del presidente del organismo, Francisco Valcárcel, entregó los donativos, de cuatro mil 500 dólares cada uno, para un total de nueve mil billetes verdes.

Durante su segunda visita del día, en la casa hogar “La Divina Providencia” del Padre Chinchachoma, en la colonia Álamos de la capital del país, se recordó a Luis Pérez, del Comité de Clasificaciones de la OMB y que falleció en diciembre pasado.

Estuvieron presentes pugilistas como César Juárez, Moisés Fuentes y Carlos “Fino” Ruiz, quienes convivieron algunos minutos con los niños de la casa hogar, en la que se da total apoyo a niños de la calle, maltratados o en riesgo social.

“Para la OMB es un privilegio acompañarlos”, dijo Rafael López a nombre de “Paquito” Valcárcel, y destacó que gracias al esfuerzo de los pugilistas sobre el ring se obtienen los donativos que entregan en diversos países, como Puerto Rico, Colombia, Nicaragua “y también llegamos a México, aquí estamos presentes”.

“Estamos felices de convivir, es un orgullo que existan este tipo de instituciones, hay que aplaudir su esfuerzo para sacar adelante a los jovencitos”, dijo Juarez, abogado de profesión y que también tiene una maestría.

Por su parte, “Moi” Fuentes pidió a los pequeños esforzarse para lograr sus objetivos, “desde pequeño tuve un sueño, la esperanza muere al último y si le echan ganas a la vida sí se puede. Ningún sueño es grande y ningún soñador es pequeño”, comentó el excampeón mundial.

Alba Garrido, directora administrativa de la casa hogar que fundó en 1979 Alejandro García Durán, mejor conocido como el “Padre Chinchachoma”, fue la encargada de recibir el cheque simbólico junto a los pugilistas, López Santos y algunos niños ahí presentes.

Al mediodía acudieron a la casa hogar “La Divina Providencia” de la Madre Inés, en San Vicente Chicoloapan, Estado de México, donde también entregaron el mismo donativo y convivieron con los niños.

MOISÉS Fuentes, campeón mundial paja de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), visitó anoche la redacción de ESTO, y expresó que está en la mejor forma de su carrera para hacer la primera defensa de su corona el 2 de junio en Tijuana, ante el retador Julio César Félix.

Acompañado de su manejador Jorge Barrera, se mostró orgulloso de pertenecer al equipo del ex campeón mundial Marco Antonio Barrera, y agregó que espera salir victorioso del Frontón Jai Alai de Tijuana, para en agosto ir a Puerto Rico a hacer la segunda exposición de su título ante el boricua Iván Calderón, el retador oficial.

“Tengo dos peleas seguidas muy duras, pero estoy seguro de ganar. Incluso en Puerto Rico iré por el nocaut, ya que ahí es difícil ganar por puntos”, agregó Moi, quien mide l.73 mts de estatura, quizá toda una marca para la división.

Fuentes añadió que su historial profesional real es de 25-1, con 19 nocauts. El único que lo ha vencido es Juan “Churritos” Hernández.

También dijo que un motor en su trayectoria es su novia Diana.

El boxeo lo lleva en la sangre, ya que su tío, Felipe Fuentes, fue estelarista del boxeo mexicano.

Con Moi Fuentes llegó también su compañero de cuadra Daniel Rosas, campeón mundial juvenil supermosca de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), y también campeón del Torneo Azteca. Otro título que ha ganado es el CABOFE de las 115 libras.

Rosas combatirá en la misma función del 2 de junio contra Enrique “Duende” Bernache. Rosas marcha invicto con marca de 22-0, y 17 nocauts. Juan Manuel Márquez , el boxeador mexicano más popular del momento y quien el sábado anterior provocó un lleno y una gran fiesta en la Arena Ciudad de México al conquistar su cuarto campeonato del mundo, firmará autógrafos para los asistentes a la tercera edición del Tecate Box Tour, que se celebrará a partir de hoy y hasta el 29 de este mes en el Deportivo Hugo Sánchez, en Cuautitlán Izcalli, Estado de México.

 Márquez se presentará el sábado 28 de abril, como figura estelar de esta inusual feria boxística instalada sobre 2,500 metros cuadrados,

 El licenciado Alfredo Vega, director de relaciones institucionales de Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, subrayó ayer, en rueda de prensa en el sitio de los hechos, que el Tecate Box Tour, además de ofrecer atractivas peleas de boxeo profesional y amateur, concede la entrada a la experiencia interactiva más impactante de este deporte. Como en sus dos ediciones anteriores en distintas ciudades de la República Mexicana, el público tendrá oportunidad de ponerse los guantes y mostrar sus habilidades con aparatos de un gimnasio real o aprender con auténticos entrenadores de boxeo, además de la oportunidad de “pelear contra una computadora”. Habrá premios a la gente del público más destacada.

 Los visitantes podrán asimismo tomarse la foto del recuerdo con las Chicas Tecate, que desde ayer causaron admiración. Se dio un “tour” a los periodistas para ser testigos de los distintos espacios, uno de ellos reservado para música en vivo, que incluye un bar y pista para baile.

 Ante la presencia del señor Alejandro Gutiérrez Mondragón, Director del Deporte en Cuautitlán Izcalli, el licenciado Alfredo Vega resaltó la apertura y disposición de las autoridades locales para que los vecinos de esta zona y poblaciones circunvecinas tengan al alcance un evento de esta magnitud. Los dos duelos estelares son a 10 rounds en peso minimosca. Gerardo Verde, ex contendor por un título del mundo, peleará con Iván “Pájaro” Díaz, participante del torneo Campeón Azteca, y Manuel “Chango” Vargas, ex monarca mundial de peso paja, combatirá con Iván “Pollo” Meneses, ex contendor por una corona del orbe.

 Las peleas de aficionados serán presentadas con apoyo del popular ex púgil local Agustín “Zorrita” Luna, quien invita a sus colegas entrenadores a que lleven a sus alumnos a competir. Habrá premios de cuatro mil pesos al primer lugar; de tres mil al segundo sitio, y dos mil al tercer puesto, además de los trofeos respectivos.

 Otro funcionario de Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma resaltó el hecho de que “la autoridad de Cuautitlán Izcalli tuvo fe en este proyecto y en hacerlo con nosotros”. Añadió que se esperan 25 mil asistentes en los nueve días del evento interactivo de box más grande de México.

Orlando “Siri” Salido the WBO featherweight champion took a victory lap last weekend with visits to Mexico City and Miami. The Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico native, arrived in Mexico City Friday, March 30th and visited with the Mexican Media on Friday, before appearing in studio on the very popular boxing show “Golpe a Golpe” and with three-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez host on ESPNDeportes.

Salido then flew to Miami on Saturday, to appear on Sunday, in “Republica Deportiva” in highest rated sports show in the Univision National Network at the invitation of his fine producer Rick Seara.

The Champ made an appearance on Sunday evening at WrestleMania 28 as a guest of Azteca Mexico Television.

Salido is coming of his second win over Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez, whom he stopped in the 10th round of the best fight of the year so far. The Mexican warior went back to Puerto Rico March 10 to give Lopez a rematch of their fight last April of 2010, where Salido stopped the Puerto Rican in eight rounds.

March 10th, Salido got up of the deck in the fifth round and then was part of two incredible non stop action rounds – 8th and 9tth- that will be hard to top this year.

“It was a great fight because we both wanted to win so much. I now know that I beat the best Juama Lopez this time, he was strong and smart, but at the end of the day I can take his punch and he can’t take mine. I am happy people enjoy the fight and that they will remembered it for a long time”, said Salido.

Salido was joined by manager, Sean Gibbons and Aldo Barba from Zanfer Promotions, during this victory lap.

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO. – Sergey Fedchenko wasted no time. He barely set foot on Mexican soil, and the Ukrainian – 30-years-old – began training for his April 14th battle against the legendary Juan Manuel Marquez. The fight takes place at the new Arena Mexico in Mexico City. Accompanied by his coach Victor Demchenko and sparring partner Arten Ayvazidi, the boxer vowed to win.

“It was always my dream to fight for a world title,” said Fedchenko. “When I was told about the possibility of coming to fight with Juan Manuel I did not hesitate for a minute. It is an honor to fight with a Mexican fighter like him. I know that in Mexico there are many who consider me to be the next victim of Juan Manuel, and even in my country some people do not have faith in me.”

“I don’t like to talk too much, but when I step into the ring and do my work – then we’ll talk. I came to win. I have respect for Juan Manuel because he faced Manny Pacquiao three times and beat him three times, but that does not mean the same thing will happen here. I’m a different fighter, so let’s see who comes out victorious.”

Argentine boxer Cesar Rene Cuenca has spent years waiting for a world title shot. On April 14th in Mexico City, he will face one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time, Juan Manuel Marquez, for the interim-WBO junior welterweight title. Cuenca (42-0, 1 KO) knows Marquez is a very experienced fighter, and he knows a lot of other fights are at stake for the Mexican icon – but Cuenca has no doubts about his ability to defeat Marquez.

“I am very happy, because I’m fulfilling my dream of fighting for the world title. I’ve always wanted to at least try, but now I am going to do it, and I’m going to win. We are preparing very well for Marquez. I know that he has a lot of experience, but I have experience as well. I am convinced that I will win,” Cuenca told Diario Abajo del Ring.

WBO Featherweight champion Orlando “Siri” Salido won the rematch this past Saturday against Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez by technical knockout in the tenth round. After knocking Lopez down early in the tenth round, referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. stop the fight when Lopez struggled to get up. In an action-packed fight, Salido was able to overcome a knockdown in the fifth round and continue to pressure Lopez until knocked Lopez out with a couple of uppercuts in the tenth.
