Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who made a major breakthrough by signing up two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming of China, described the planned April 6th card in Macau as “sensational.” Shiming will make his pro debut on the card, which takes place at the Venetian Macau Resort Hotel.
In a major thrust to attract the huge Chinese population which has shown a dramatic increase in the interest in boxing because of fighters like Zou Shiming, the Macau card will predominantly feature Asian fighters with the Philippines Brian Viloria defending his WBO/WBA flyweight title against tough Mexican challenger Juan Francisco Estrada and the sons of former two division world champion Dodie Boy Penalosa, Dodie Boy Jr and Dave Penalosa also seeing action.
WBO flyweight mandatory challenger Milan Melindo will be on the card hopefully against a high-ranking Asian or if they are unable to get a competitive opponent ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told us they will try to sign up a Mexican or any other tough Latino opponent.
Arum sounded excited over the arrival of Zhou in Los Angeles on Monday. He said they planned “a big ceremony for him with Chinese drums and everything” at the grand arrival on Tuesday at The Venetian Las Vegas Porte Cochere at noon.
Shiming will be greeted by his Top Rank promoters, Bob Arum and Todd duBoef; his new trainers, Freddie Roach and Miguel Diaz; and John Caparella, president and COO of The Venetian and The Palazzo.
