Dear President Valcarcel and Members of the Championship Committee:
As you are aware, my office represents the interests of WBO Cruiserweight Super Champion Oleksandr Usyk and Team Usyk. Mr. Usyk has requested that my office contact the WBO in order to communicate his intentions moving forward and to make a request per the Regulations of the World Boxing Organization.
REQUEST OF WBO SUPER CHAMPION OLEKSANDR USYK: THAT THE WBO OFFICIALLY DESIGNATE WBO CRUISERWEIGHT SUPER CHAMPION OLEKSANDR USYK AS THE MANDATORY CHALLENGER IN THE IMMEDIAITE HIGHER WEIGHT CLASS – HEAVYWEIGHT.
HISTORY
Oleksandr Usyk is proud to have unified the Cruiserweight titles as he defeated all opponents on his way to winning the WBSS Cruiserweight Tournament and the Ali Trophy. Unification of all of the titles is all too rare these days, giving the fans clarity once and for all who is the best boxer in the division. Usyk is thankful to the WBSS, all of the organizations and all of the boxers who took part in the tournament as well as those who enabled the tournament to serve to determine that Oleksandr Usyk was the true and deserving undisputed champion of the Cruiserweight Division.
In light of the length and quality of Usyk’s reign as WBO Champion, his unification of the Cruiserweight Titles via the WBSS Tournament, and his incredible amateur record, which included an Olympic Gold Medal, the WBO acknowledged Usyk as having Super Champion
status when President Valcarcel personally presented him with his Super Champion belt in the ring just prior to the Joshua v Povetkin bout in Wembley Stadium, London, in 2018.
AUTHORITY
As WBO Cruiserweight Super Champion, Oleksandr Usyk hereby requests that the WBO, per Section 14 of the Regulations, officially designate Oleksandr Usyk as the Mandatory Challenger in the Heavyweight Division. Usyk hereby confirms that he intends to fight his next contest in the Heavyweight Division.
Section 14 provides:
- ELIGIBILITY TO BE CONSIDERED FOR DESIGNATION AS THE MANDATORY CHALLENGER IN HIGHER OR LOWER DIVISION.
If requested by a Super Champion, the Championship Committee may designate the Super Champion as the mandatory challenger for the immediate higher or lower division.
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
Since current champion status is not required to remain a Super Champion per Section 14, Mr. Usyk further notifies the WBO that he formally relinquishes the WBO Cruiserweight Championship but will continue to reign as Super Champion. This will enable other boxers to enjoy the prestige and benefits of being the WBO World Champion in the Cruiserweight division as Usyk seek to conquer the Heavyweight Division per his mandatory status.
