SOTO DEFENDS WBO WORLD TITLE AGAINST TAKAYAMA ON MAY 8

Elwin Soto will defend his WBO Junior-Flyweight World title against Katsunari Takayama as the chief-support bout to the blockbuster Super-Middleweight unification clash between Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 at AT&T stadium in Arlington, TX, live worldwide on DAZN (except Mexico).

Soto (18-1 12 KOs) fights under the Matchroom banner for the first time on the show having penned a deal with Eddie Hearn last week. The Mexican makes the third defense of the crown he ripped from Angel Acosta in dramatic fashion with a final round KO win in California in June 2019 and has seen off the challenges of Edward Heno in October 2019 and Carlos Butrago last October.

The 24 year old now puts the crown on the line against the seasoned Japanese Takayama (32-8 12 KOs). The five-time Minimumweight champion made his return to professional action in December in Osaka, Japan having left the paid ranks as a World ruler in 2017 to aim for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo – and now the 37 year old has switched his focus to becoming a two-weight World champion.

There’s a stacked card under the two World title fights, led by Kieron Conway defending his WBA Intercontinental Super-Welterweight title against Souleymane Cissokho.

Conway (16-1-1 3 KOs) picked up the title with an impressive win over Navid Mansouri at Matchroom’s Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex in August. Conway and Cissokho (12-0 8 KOs) were due to meet on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s win over Kubrat Pulev in London in December, but the bout had to be shelved, so Conway took his frustrations out on Macauley McGowan on that card instead, with a shut-out win over ten rounds.

French Olympian Cissokho shrugged off his pain at missing the original fight date on the undercard of his manager Joshua by recording his eighth KO win from 12 outings with a sixth round stoppage of Daniel Echeverria in Dallas in March, setting up a rescheduled clash with Conway that is full of intrigue and importance for their respective careers.

Frank Sanchez (17-0 13 KOs) let his hands go for a seventh round KO win over Julian Fernandez on the undercard of Alvarez’s win over Callum Smith in San Antonio, Texas in December, and the big Cuban Heavyweight will be looking to repeat that feat against Nagy Aguilera (21-10 14 KOs).

Sanchez is ranked at a lofty #6 with the WBO, and the 28 year old Eddy Reynoso charge will be plotting a route to the crunch clashes with his fellow big-hitters, but Aguilera will be planning to give him a tough night and the 34 year old comes into the bout on the back of a 21st career win in November.

Mexican-American talent Marc Castro (2-0 2 KOs) makes it three Canelo undercard appearances from three since making his pro debut on the Canelo-Smith card in Texas. The stellar amateur recorded a third round stoppage that night and followed that with a second round KO in Miami on the Canelo-Yildirim bill – the 21 year old will be looking to shine on the biggest stage once again over eight rounds against an opponent to be named soon.

Castro’s old amateur foe Keyshawn Davis (2-0 2 KOs) made his debut at the Hard Rock Stadium and he appears alongside Castro once again in his third pro outing. The Virginia starlet grabbed a second round win that night over Lester Brown and followed that by forcing Richman Ashelley to retire after four rounds of their battle in Dubai earlier this month, and Davis will face Jose Antonio Meza (6-4 1 KO) over six rounds. It’s a family affair on the night with Keyshawn’s brother Kelvin Davis (1-0 1 KO) fights for the second time in the paid ranks after a second round KO win on his debut in December in Los Angeles, taking on Jan Marsalek (8-2 7 KOs) over six rounds.

Rounding off the undercard, Mexican Welterweight Christian Alan Gomez Duran (19-2-1 17 KOs) is on another Canelo undercard after stopping Angel Hernandez in three rounds in San Antonio in December, and he’ll celebrate Cinco De Mayo weekend over eight rounds against an opponent to be named soon.

“It’s a stacked night of action at the home of the Dallas Cowboys on Cinco De Mayo weekend,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Elwin Soto is a great addition to our stable and the Mexican World champion will want to dazzle on the biggest stage against the experienced Takayama.

“The clash between Kieron and Souleymane is a cracker, and I am thrilled for both of them that they get to perform on this stage – there will be some spice there after it was postponed in December and now, they get their hands on each other in Texas.

“Frank always brings the heat and he’ll be eyeing a showstopping KO, and again, Marc and Keyshawn get to shine under the brightest lights – it’s going to be a spectacular night of action, leading to the big one between Canelo and Billy Joe.”

LAS VEGAS (June 9, 2020) — Don’t blink. Top Rank on ESPN’s summer schedule resumes with a trio of shows, commencing Tuesday, June 16, with the return of bantamweight contender Joshua “Don’t Blink” Greer Jr. in a 10-rounder against 23-year-old Filipino upstart Mike Plania at the MGM Grand Conference Center – Grand Ballroom in Las Vegas.

The action continues from MGM Grand Thursday, June 18, when former two-weight world champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza will face former world title challenger Mikkel LesPierre in a 10-round super lightweight showdown.

Week 2 concludes Saturday, June 20, at TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City, when WBO junior featherweight world champion Navarrete will fight Uriel “Yuca” Lopez in a 10-round featherweight bout. Navarrete-Lopez will headline one of two June cards from TV Azteca Studios, which will be promoted by Top Rank in association with Zanfer Promotions.

All three Week 2 events will air live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes (in Spanish), with start times to be announced shortly.

“It is exciting to see these great fighters back in action and in fights that promise to be action-packed,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Greer and Pedraza have tough opponents in front of them, but if they are victorious, we could see them in world title fights before the end of the year. Navarrete is the king of the 122-pounders, a throwback fighter who wants to stay as active as possible.”

Greer, the Chicago product who taunts potential KO victims with custom-made pillows, is knocking on the doorstep of a world title shot. He has won 19 fights in a row and is currently the WBO No. 1 contender at bantamweight. Plania, meanwhile, has won eight straight bouts since a March 2018 decision loss to Juan Carlos Payano, a fight that propelled Payano to a world title shot against pound-for-pound great Naoya Inoue.

“Whoever the opponent is, it doesn’t matter. I prepare the same,” Greer said. “Every fight is a world title fight for me. I’m ranked number one in the world, so I have to take advantage of this opportunity. ‘Mr. ESPN’ is back!”

Former lightweight world champion DeMarco, who is coming off a competitive decision loss to top contender Jamal James, represents a quantum leap in class for the 28-year-old Santillan. A native of San Diego who has stopped his last four opponents, Santillan hopes to become the first man to knock out DeMarco in nearly eight years. In his last bout, he overcame a nearly 19-month layoff to knock out Wilfrido Buelvas in two rounds.

Undercard

Nikoloz Sekhniashvili (5-0, 4 KOs), a 26-year-old who hails from the nation of Georgia, will make his 2020 debut against Detroit native Isiah Jones (8-1, 3 KOs) in a six-rounder at super middleweight. Sekhniashvili, trained by Javiel Centeno, is part of a deep stable of fighters that includes Puerto Rican phenom Xander Zayas and lightweight contender George Kambosos Jr.

Super featherweight prospect Edward Vazquez (7-0, 1 KO), from Fort Worth, Texas, will face an opponent to be named in a six-rounder.

Puerto Rican-born heavyweight Hector Perez (6-2, 3 KOs) will fight southpaw spoiler Juan Torres (5-2-1, 2 KOs), from Cypress, Texas, in a six-round bout. Torres has won two straight and has never been knocked out in a professional match.

Pedraza, who won world titles at junior lightweight and lightweight, is taking another run at the super lightweight division following last September’s decision loss to Jose “Chon” Zepeda. His opponent LesPierre challenged Maurice Hooker for a world title last year, dropping a unanimous decision. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brooklyn resident received deliveries and assisted doctors and nurses at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in Manhattan.

“I am very excited to finally return to the ring after this long break. During quarantine, I made adjustments and trained hard from home, Pedraza said. “Despite everything that is happening in the world, my team and I have had a great training camp. I have done many runs up the mountains in Cidra, Puerto Rico. I am now focused on giving the fans a great show on June 18 against Mikkel LesPierre. We know he is a world-class fighter, but I am, too, and I am determined to return to the top once again.”

“I’m excited and blessed to be a part of the first round of televised sports as we navigate through this pandemic,” LesPierre said. “Jose Pedraza is a good fighter and a former world champion, but I feel that I have the tools to beat him. The 20-year-old Flores, fresh off a win on the Deontay Wilder-Tyson Fury 2 undercard, returns in his first scheduled 10-rounder. Flores, the Stockton, California native who signed with Top Rank when he was 16 years old, packed more than 10,000 spectators into the Stockton Arena last May to establish himself as one of the sport’s top regional ticket-sellers. Ruiz is unbeaten in his last 16 bouts.

David “The Lion of Zion” Kaminsky (6-0, 3 KOs) will face noted spoiler Clay Collard (6-2-3, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder at super middleweight. Collard, who also is a veteran MMA pro, has defeated unbeaten prospects in his last two fights.

In four-round bouts each, Puerto Rican super featherweight Frevian Gonzalez (2-0, 1 KO) will fight an opponent to be named, while super lightweight Victor Rodriguez (2-0, 1 KO) will face Justin Horsley (0-1).

Boxing’s most active world champion, Navarrete defended his title five times (all by KO) in nine months, most recently knocking out Jeo Santisima on the Wilder-Fury 2 Pay-Per-View undercard. Navarrete is fighting as a featherweight for the first time in nearly three years in what will be his sixth bout in 13 months. Lopez has a 2016 knockout victory over longtime Japanese contender Ryo Matsumoto.

Undercard action will feature Carlos “Chinito” Ornelas (25-2, 14 KOs), who will take on Edwin “Pupo” Palomares (12-3-1, 3 KOs) in a 10-rounder at featherweight. Featherweight prospect Sergio Chirino Sanchez (14-1, 8 KOs) will look to extend his winning streak to six against Gustavo Alan Pina (8-2, 5 KOs) in an eight-round bout.

Former interim world champion Silvia Torres (20-2-2, 7 KOs) will face 21-bout veteran Edith de Jesus Flores in an eight-rounder at light flyweight.

WBO Jr. Featherweight World Champion Emanuel Navarrete honored at 22nd WBO Golf Tournament

GUAYAMA, Puerto Rico – Current Junior Featherweight Champion Emanuel ‘El Vaquero’ Navarrete was recognized by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) today, during the 22nd Annual WBO Golf Tournament at ‘El Legado Golf Club’ in Guayama. This edition of the annual golf competition serves as preamble to the Thirty-Second Annual WBO Convention, which will be held in the city of Tokyo, Japan, from December 2 until Thursday, December 5, 2019.

Navarrete, who has successfully defended his title three times this year, winning all by knockout said, “I’m very happy to be here in Puerto Rico with the WBO. I will continue working hard to continue defending the title and I hope to continue climbing divisions. I hope to continue fighting for the WBO as they were the first to give me the opportunity to be world champion.”

“When I mentioned on social media that Navarrete is the best 122 pounds in the world, many criticized me but now time proved me right,” said WBO president Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcárcel Mulero. “Navarrete has the punch of Wilfredo Gómez when he was at 122 pounds and we know he will continue to give much to talk about. Being a world champion is a dream that Emanuel Navarrete has already fulfilled. But this Saturday, he will fulfill another.

“I always wanted to fight in Las Vegas, as a world champion, on a national weekend. Thank God, I will be given this opportunity n Saturday,” Navarrete said shortly before closing his preparation in Tijuana.

The “Cowboy” Navarrete (28-1-0, 24 KOs) will defend for the third time his WBO super bantamweight world championship, against Filipino contender Juan Miguel Elorde (28-1, 15 KOs), in the fabulous T-Mobile Arena of Las Vegas.

Navarrete travels to Las Vegas motivated and with the illusion of giving the Mexican fans a great show, and of course, a memorable victory.

“I am facing a very strong opponent, from a boxing family like Elorde, and he has a lot of quality, but we have done a great preparation and we are going to bring the belt back home,” Navarrete said.

Although the show is headlined by undefeated heavyweights Tyson Fury (28-0-1, 20 KO’s) and Otto Wallin (20-0, 13 KO’s), Navarrete is aware that the Mexican fans’ eyes will be on their countrymen.

“It is a great motivation and it is very special at this time in my career that I am considered to present Mexico in showcased fight in Las Vegas, it is a dream come true,” said the boxer born in San Juan Zitlaltepec.

WBO World Jr. Featherweight Champion Emanuel ‘Vaquero’ Navarrete is now one of the sport’s elite. Navarrete knocked out the previously unbeaten Francisco “Panchito” De Vaca in three rounds Saturday evening in front of 3,944 fans in the first-ever boxing card at Banc of California Stadium.

Navarrete (28-1, 24 KOs), who upset Isaac Dogboe to win the title and then defeated him in an immediate rematch, knocked down De Vaca (20-1, 6 KOs) in the second round and forced the referee to stop the fight after dishing out a sustained beating in the third.

“I want to thank my supporters, and second of all, I want to continue the tradition of Mexican boxing in Los Angeles. `I want to fill arenas and follow in the footsteps of Mexican legends,” Navarrete said. “I’m talking to {Top Rank} about fighting September 14 on the Tyson Fury card in Las Vegas. I want to thank Bob Arum and Zanfer Promotions for the opportunity.”

A Female World Champion against a challenger who has won all her fights by knockout is a tough test that will have to overcome the talent of Monterrey at home, as part of the evening boxing that Zanfer and Golden Boy will present this Saturday, in a mega event that will be televised in national territory by Azteca 7, the House of Boxing and globally by the application DAZN.

The world champion who will be sitting in a “powder keg” will be Arely “Machine Gun” Muciño (23-3-2, 10 ko’s), who will make the second defense of her WBO flyweight world championship against the Venezuelan Yairineth “Chinita” Altuva (10-2-0, 10 ko’s), in the classic confrontation between the fighter of great technique and power factor in both fists.

Muciño has been world champion of the four main organizations that govern the boxing world, while Altuve, apart from having won 10 fights in professional boxing and all by knockout, is also an official the Municipal Police and qualified Physical Education teacher of the Experimental Pedagogical University of Libertador.

The two defeats that appear in the record of the “Chinita” were in dispute of the world championship before Leonela Paola Yudica, last year. The first was a decision so controversial, that the same Argentine press condemned it and generated a direct rematch. The second, although Yudica won by unanimous decision, visited the canvas in the third round.

In the main event Jaime Munguia will defend his WBO junior middleweight against mandatory challenger Dennis Hogan.

The fight between WBO Junior Middleweight titleholder Jaime Munguia and mandatory challenger Dennis Hogan was officially announced yesterday, and the April 13 card is set to take place at Arena Monterrey in Monterry, Mexico, streaming live on .

Munguia (32-0, 26 KO) will be making the fourth defense of the belt he won in May 2018 from Sadam Ali, having already turned back challenges from Liam Smith, Brandon Cook, and Takeshi Inoue, last fighting on Jan. 26 in Houston.

The 22-year-old Munguia, whose long-term future is at 160 pounds given his size at 154, will be a massive favorite against Hogan (28-1-1, 7 KO), a 34-year-old fighter born in Ireland and based in Australia. Hogan’s most notable fight to date came in 2015, when he lost a decision to Jack Culcay.

It was also reported recently that Diego De La Hoya (21-0, 10 KO) will return on the card against an opponent to be named. The 24-year-old De La Hoya will be moving up to the featherweight division after repeated trouble making weight at super bantamweight.

WBO women’s flyweight titleholder Arely Mucino (27-3-2, 10 KO) will also be in action, as well as junior flyweight Daniel Valladares (19-1, 11 KO) and featherweight Irving Turrubiartes (18-0, 12 KO). You may recall that Mucino was set to defend against two-time Olympic gold medalist Nicola Adams (5-0, 3 KO) on March 8, but Adams suffered an injury in training and had to postpone the fight.

MÉXICO – Juan Francisco ‘Gallo’ Estrada y Hernán “Tyson” Márquez estuvieron frente a frente durante la presentación, en conferencia de prensa en la Ciudad de México.

Una de las principales motivaciones del campeón para brindarle la oportunidad titular al retador, es saber si está a su altura.

El campeón Internacional de la WBO, César Juárez, ha cumplido todos sus objetivos y ahora va por el más grande en su carrera

El ser campeón Internacional de peso supergallo de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (WBO) y primer clasificado en la división, no fue un recorrido fácil para el capitalino César Juárez, quien es un peleador que ha aprovechado cada oportunidad en el ring, tal como lo demostró hace unas semanas al vencer en su propia tierra al sinaloense Juan Carlos ‘Zurdito’ Sánchez.

El púgil capitalino platicó con ESTADIO, acompañado por su representante Sean Gibbons (Top Rank y Zanfer), así como por su padre y preparador físico, Margarito Juárez, y parte del equipo, en una charla donde habló desde sus inicios, recordando que como peleador amateur venció en una final nacional al sonorense Óscar Valdez.

“Fui tres veces campeón nacional. En una de esas finales, vencí a Óscar Valdez. Lo recuerdo bien, fue en 2006, en Apizaco, Tlaxcala. Como amateur, gané 106 peleas y perdí seis”, rememoró el monarca Internacional en las 122 libras de la WBO.

Con 23 años de edad y récord de 19-3, 14 nocauts, Juárez ya tiene experiencia internacional con la victoria que se apuntó en Las Vegas sobre el puertorriqueño César Seda, que lo catapultó a la pelea de campeonato contra el ‘Zurdito’ Sànchez.

Aunque esa noche tenía todo en contra, señaló que su gran preparación lo sacó adelante, aguantando un clima bastante fuerte con mucha humedad y muy poca ventilación tras doce rounds frenéticos.

“Las oportunidades son para aprovecharlas. Sabía que esa pelea no la podía perder, que era mi oportunidad. Soy un peleador que se prepara bastante bien, pero esta vez lo hice al doble para ganar. Todo nos resultó, salimos con el brazo, vencimos al ‘Zurdito’ y al clima al que uno no está acostumbrado”, indicó con una sonrisa, mostrando su cinturón de campeón.

Tiene licenciatura y maestría

En el deporte en general, es difícil encontrar a un atleta que divida su tiempo con los estudios.

César Juárez es uno de esos casos contados que hay en el deporte mexicano, al tener una carrera universitaria en Leyes y además una maestría.

“Decidí ser profesional para solventar mis gastos. Yo sabía que tenía cualidades para destacar como profesional, eso también nos impulsó para dejar el amateur y dar el salto como profesional.

“Cuando empecé a cobrar por mis primeras peleas, ese dinero lo utilizaba para pagarme la carrera. Mis padres me ayudaron mucho, ellos también me apoyaban económicamente. Ese dinero siempre lo vi como una inversión para terminar mi carrera como abogado y hacer después la maestría”, manifestó con gesto de satisfacción.

Como monarca Internacional, afirmó que lo que sigue es buscar el campeonato mundial absoluto.

“Soy una persona que ha trabajado mucho por lo que quiere. Ya tengo un título importante de un organismo que me abrió las puertas. Ahora quiero el título mundial, pero sé que eso depende de mis promotores, de cuando ellos me digan. De lo que estos seguro, es que estaré listo para esa pelea”.

Su padre, el señor Margarito Juárez contó una anécdota que a más de uno le arrebató la sonrisa en torno al por qué metió a su hijo al boxeo.

“Yo siempre hice deporte, corrí maratones de más joven. Siempre le inculqué a mi hijo el deporte. Pero lo metí al boxeo porque en la primaria había niños que lo molestaban, hasta le pegaban y dije ‘esto no puede seguir’. Lo metí a entrenar box para que se defendiera y miren hasta dónde ha llegado”, señaló sonriente.

“Queremos el título mundial”

Al ser clasificado más alto en peso supergallo, por la WBO, su representante Sean Gibbons señaló que esperarán a la decisión que tome el cubano Guillermo Rigondeaux –actual campeón supergallo WBO– al hablarse de que podría subir a la división inmediata, dejando así el título vacante.

“Parece que Rigondeaux se va a peso pluma, por ahí escuché que quiere una pelea contra Lomachenko (campeón pluma WBO). Vamos a esperar a su decisión en las próximas semanas. Nosotros queremos que César pelea en octubre o noviembre y si es por el título mundial, qué mejor”.

En este sentido, el representante de Top Rank, quien trabaja de manera conjunta con Bob Arum y Fernando Beltrán (Zanfer), señaló que, de quedar vacante el campeonato, es muy probable que se enfrente a un alto clasificado de la división por el título mundial.

“César es número uno en la división y eso lo convierte en retador al título. Si queda vacante el campeonato, es muy probable que enfrente a otro alto clasificado. Pero vamos a esperar a los próximos días”, estableció Gibbons.

El Presidente de México Enrique Peña Nieto felicitó personalmente al primer campeón mundial regiomontano, Francisco ‘Chihuas’ Rodríguez que el pasado 22 de marzo se coronó monarca Paja de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) en la Arena Monterrey ante Merlito Sabillo al que le arrebató el invicto por nocaut en el décimo asalto, en cartelera organizada por la empresa Zanfer de Fernando Beltrán.

Contrario a otros monarcas mundiales mexicanos, al ‘Chihuas’ lo felicitó personalmente el primer mandatario nacional en su tierra, Monterrey, Nuevo León en una visita que tuvo de trabajo, destacando el triunfo del peleador para los mexicanos.

El peleador acudió a la cita a donde fue invitado por personal del ejecutivo estatal y se entrevistó con el Gobernador de Nuevo León Rodrigo Medina y con el Presidente Enrique Peña Nieto, yendo acompañado de su entrenador y manager José Antonio Hernández.

‘El Chihuas’, monarca mundial Paja de la OMB, organismo que preside Francisco Valcárcel, agradeció el gesto y le regaló un par de guantes autografiados al Presidente.

Orlando Salido, el campeón mundial mexicano y el retador ucraniano , Vasyl Lomachenko ofrecieron un entrenamiento público este miércoles y más que su talento o aptitudes boxísticas, dejaron ver el hambre de triunfo que tienen y el deseo de vencer y convencer. Hay mucho en juego, aparte de un campeonato mundial. El “Siri” Salido (40-12-2, 28 ko’s) expondrá su campeonato mundial Pluma OMB, ante Lomachenko (1-0-0, 1 ko) este sábado, en el Alamodome de San Antonio, Texas, en lo que será el respaldo principal de la función que presentarán Zanfer y Top Rank, estelarizada por el duelo entre Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. y Brian Vera II, y que será transmitida en México por la señal de la “Casa del Boxeo”, Azteca 7. Con estos antecedentes, la contienda entre Salido y Lomachenko es intrigante, interesante y se espera muy disputada. El entrenamiento público dejo ver no nada más la gran preparación que han llevado a cabo y la motivación que traen, sino esa hambre de triunfo que hacen que las peleas sean memorables.

The future of Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40KOs) should become clearer by Chistmas Day. On Thursday and Friday, Marquez will be meeting with the president of the World Boxing Organization, Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcárcel, who will be visiting Mexico.

Marquez would like a rematch with WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (31-0, 12KOs), who won a split decision over the Mexican veteran in October.

Valcarcel wants to talk to Marquez about the possibility of facing the current WBO champion at 140-pounds, Ruslan Provodnikov. Marquez has rejected the idea of a Provodnikov fight in several interviews and even threatened to retire if he doesn’t get Bradley again.

Marquez did tell his promoter, Fernando Beltran of Zanfer, that he wants to fight twice in 2014 before retiring. Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum, who works with Beltran, confirmed those negotiations are ongoing.

“I spoke with Beltrán and he informed me that he is already speaking [with Marquez]. Márquez wants to do two more fights before retiring. We are going to speak before Christmas Day. We believe that a rematch can be done with Bradley and that he could also fight with Provodnikov,” Arum told Carlos Navaez.

El mexicano Moisés “Moi” Fuentes, flamante campeón mundial minimosca interino de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), recibió buenas noticias de su promotor Fernando Beltrán: en diciembre defenderá en Chiapas el cetro mundial minimosca interino de OMB ante un retador que ya se le busca, y en marzo del año entrante peleará en Macao, China Continental.

La intención de Beltrán, presidente de la empresa Zanfer, es que Fuentes salga airoso de su defensa en Chiapas, ya sea en Tapachula o Tuxtla Gutiérrez, y posteriormente en marzo irá a oriente a enfrentarse al filipino Donnie Nietes, por el campeonato mundial minimosca absoluto de la Organización Mundial.

Nietes es el campeón propietario, y “Moi” el interino, por lo que es obligado que se enfrenten para encontrar al campeón absoluto de la agrupación que preside el abogado Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel desde Puerto Rico.

“Moi” Fuentes y Donnie Nietes ya se enfrentaron y el resultado en las islas Filipinas fue de empate, lo que se tradujo en un resultado que para “Moi” fue un despojo.

Ahora el pleito de desempate se llevará a un terreno neutral, a China Continental, y al nuevo mercado de oro del boxeo, Macao, antigua posesión portuguesa, en donde hay hoteles y casinos de súper lujo, y a pesar de pertenecer a China, una nación comunista, se conserva su estatus capitalista, como Hong Kong.

Fuentes ya inició sus trabajos bajo las órdenes de su manejador Jorge Barrera Tapia para pelear en el último mes del año. Aguarda el nombre de su rival.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada.-La función que encabezarán el campeón de peso welter (OMB) Timothy Bradley Jr., y el cuatro veces campeón del mundo el mexicano Juan Manuel Márquez, tendrá un respaldo de lujo el próximo sábado 12 de octubre en el Thomas & Mack Center de esta ciudad y será televisado por HBO a través del sistema de pago por evento.

Promueven Top Rank, Promociones Zanfer, Wynn Las Vegas, Márquez Boxing y Cerveza Tecate. Márquez buscará su quinto título mundial en distintas divisiones, el de las 147 libras de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo.

En el respaldo el clasificado número uno Orlando Cruz, se enfrentará al dos veces campeón del mundo Orlando “Siri” Salido, por el cetro pluma de la OMB vacante.

Cruz (20-2-1, 10 KOs), quien representó a Puerto Rico en los Juegos Olímpicos del año 2000, ha ganado tres de sus últimas cuatro peleas por nocaut y no conoce derrota en más de dos años. Es el monarca Latino de la OMB en peso pluma.

Salido (39-12-2, 27 KOs) de Ciudad Obregón, reinó como monarca de la OMB en pluma por casi dos años y también fue monarca pluma de la FIB al vencer a Cristóbal Cruz en el 2008. Salido conquistó el cetro pluma de la OMB en el 2011 al noquear al entonces invicto “Juanma” López en una de las mejores peleas del año. Salido hizo dos defensas exitosas de su corona. Salido ha ganado cinco de sus últimas seis peleas por nocaut, su única derrota la sufrió el pasado enero cuando cayó ante Miguel Angel García y perdió su corona. García perdió el cetro en la báscula en junio pasado y por eso está el trono vacante.

El ganador de dos medallas de oro en Juegos Olímpicos, el ucraniano Vasyl Lomachenko, hará su debut profesional a 10 asaltos contra el clasificado mexicano José Luis Ramírez. Lomachenko conquistó medallas de oro en los JO de Pekín y Londres, primero como pluma y luego como ligero.

Ramírez (24-2-2, 15 KOs) de Mexicali, ha ganado seis de sus últimas siete peleas y viene de derrotar por puntos al Filipino Rey Bautista (34-2, 25 KOs) el pasado abril para ganar la corona pluma Internacional de la OMB y el actualmente el séptimo clasificado de la OMB en pluma.

 El púgil nicaragüense Carlos “Chocorroncito” Buitrago lució su mejor boxeo y determinación, para imponerse por amplia decisión unánime al mexicano Julián Yedras, para conquistar la vacante corona mínima interina de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), este sábado por la noche en el combate estelar de una cartelera que fue organizada por las empresas Zanfer y Max Boxing en el Centro Internacional de Convenciones Yucatán Siglo XXI de Mérida, Yucatán.

Buitrago, promovido por las empresas Prodesa en Nicaragua y Dream Team a nivel internacional, dominó a Yedras en pelea que lució bastante pareja, hasta que en la recta final el nicaragüense tomó el control total de la pelea sometiendo duramente a la humanidad del mexicano.

Al finalizar el round 11, Yedras se fue muy golpeado a su esquina, casino noqueado, y Buitrago lo siguió dominan en el round final, aunque sin conseguir un golpe definitivo antes del campanazo final.  Al final, los jueces decretaron vencedor a Buitrago con tarjetas de 118-110, 116-113 y 118-111, para conquistar el vacante título interino mínimo de la OMB.

Mérida.- El nicaragüense Carlos “Chocorroncito” Buitrago se coronó esta noche aquí como nuevo campeón mundial mínimo de la OMB tras dar un recital de mano izquierda y de recursos boxísticos sobre un empeñoso, ineficaz, pero sobre todo estoico mexicano Julián “Niño Artillero” Yedra al que venció por clara decisión unánime en 12 rounds.

Ante un lleno en el Centro internacional de Convenciones de esta ciudad del sureste mexicano, Buitrago impuso sus condiciones desde el principio y se enfiló a un triunfo claro, con algunos sobresaltos en la mitad del combate.

Tras un primer round en el que no hubo ventaja clara, Buitrago se encaminó a un triunfo con una estrategia de pegar siempre de primero, basado en su mano izquierda que como pistón entró como cuchillo entre mantequilla casi siempre en el rostro de un Yedra que rígido, sin movimiento de cintura y de cabeza, recibía casi todo lo que le tiraban.

Con esporádicos ataques que poco daño hicieron en el también retador al vacante campeonato, Yedras buscó emparejar las acciones de manera infructuosa, sucumbiendo ante el mejor boxeo y mayor velocidad del centroamericano que se fue hasta el quinto asalto con clara ventaja.

Empero, en el sexto, más decidido, quizás consciente de la oportunidad que tenía ante sí, Yedras comenzó a meterse en la pelea, dejó de ceder la distanciua que le convenía a Buitrago y entró al terreno corto, donde lo   golpeó e incluso logró estremecer para apuntarse ese, el sexto y séptimo round.

La esperanza resurgió en la arena, con gritos de México, México, pero a partir del octavo, Buitrago la mató al retomar el control con su boxeo a media distancia, más veloz, dinámico y certero sobre un yedras que ya no pudo crecer y volvió al ritmo errático, desconcertante del primer tercio del combate.

Así, ambos se fueron hasta el undécimo aslato en el que Biutrago, con combinaciones fulgurantes   tuvo al borde del nócaut al mexicano al que perdonó y dejo ir cuando parecía tenerlo listo.

La pelea llegó a su fin y con votaciones de Francis Jackson (118-111) (islas Vírgenes), Víctor Salomón   (116-113) de México y el boricua Luis Ruiz (116-113) se fiormalizó el triunfo de Buitrago que mejoró su record a 27-0-0 con 18 nócauts, mientras Yedra, perdió el invicto y quedó 24-1-0 con 12 cloroformos.

MANILA, Philippines – WBO lightflyweight champion Donnie (Ahas) Nietes of Murcia, Negros Occidental, will battle mandatory challenger Moises Fuentes in Mexico late this year, his manager Michael Aldeguer confirmed recently, but is set to make a voluntary defense earlier against an opponent still to be named.

Aldeguer said he has come to terms with Zanfer, the Mexican outfit that promotes Fuentes, to stage the rematch in Mexico in November or December. Last March, Nietes and Fuentes fought to a majority 12-round draw at the Waterfront Hotel Pacific Ballroom in Lahug. The outcome was disputed by both camps. Nietes’ manager Marco Antonio Barrera said in his view, Fuentes won by a margin of four rounds. But ALA Boxing chairman Tony Aldeguer disagreed, asserting that Nietes threw the clearer and harder punches in a close fight.

When Fuentes met Nietes, he still held the WBO minimumweight championship. The Mexican has since relinquished the throne and is now the No. 1 contender in the 108-pound division. Filipino Merlito Sabillo, who also belongs to the ALA stable, has succeeded Fuentes as WBO 105-pound titleholder.

For a while, it appeared that Nietes would not agree to a rematch particularly as Fuentes demanded as a condition that no Filipino judge would be assigned by WBO president Paco Valcarcel. In the first encounter, Filipino judge Danrex Tapdasan scored it 115-113 for Nietes while San Diego’s Pat Russell and Las Vegas’ Adalaide Byrd saw it 114-all. Aldeguer said Fuentes had no business making the demand particularly as he never complained when a Mexican judge was on the panel in two of Nietes’ three title defenses as WBO minimumweight champion in Mexico.

It is not known if Valcarcel will assign a Filipino or a Mexican for the return engagement in Mexico. What is certain is the rematch will be in Fuentes’ home country. Aldeguer said since Fuentes is the No. 1 contender, he is entitled to challenge Nietes once more.

“Donnie sustained two big cuts above both eyes last March and he’s still not allowed to do any sparring,” said Michael Aldeguer. “But his next fight will be on Aug. 24 in Cebu. It will be a voluntary defense before the rematch with Fuentes.” Aldeguer said no opponent has been identified for the voluntary defense at the moment but he will be in the top 10 ratings.

Two of the top 10 contenders are Filipinos, No. 5 Joebert Alvarez and No. 8 Randy Petalcorin so they’re not in the list of Aldeguer’s candidates. Aside from Fuentes, there are two Mexicans in the top 10, No. 3 Javier Mendoza and No. 10 Odion Zaleta. Aldeguer will likely not tap a Mexican for the optional defense. That leaves No. 2 Kompayak Porporamook of Thailand, No. 4 Noknoi Sitthiprasert of Thailand, No. 5 Shin Ono of Japan, No. 7 Luis Alberto Rios of Panama and No. 9 Felix Alvarado of Nicaragua.

Kompayak, the former WBC lightflyweight champion, is now the interim WBA flyweight titlist so he’s moved up in weight. Rios was outpointed by IBF lightflyweight champion Johnriel Casimero last March so he wouldn’t be an attraction for Filipino fans. By process of elimination, the remaining candidates are Noknoi, Ono and Alvarado.

Noknoi, 26, has a 42-4 record, with 24 KOs. He has won his last 41 outings after losing four of his first five bouts since turning pro in 2003. The Thai lost a decision to Filipino Dondon Jimenea but has beaten all his other Filipino opponents, namely Edison Berwela (W6), Rey Loreto (W6), Donny Mabao (W10 twice), Dindo Nacionales (KO4), Joel Rafols (KO8), Carlo Besares (KO2), Jason Geda (KO3) and Tommy Terrado (W10).

Ono, 30, has never faced a Filipino. He could be seriously considered as Japan recently recognized the WBO. Ono’s record is 15-5-2, with 2 KOs. His last win by stoppage came in 2004 over Keijiro Mizuno and he has since figured in 14 bouts, losing thrice, two by knockout.

Alvarado, 24, is a dangerous customer with a 16-0 record, including 13 KOs. He’s coming off a first round knockout win over Carlos Melo last April. Melo went the distance in losing a 12-round decision to Filipino Milan Melindo in 2008. Six of Alvarado’s 13 wins by knockout came in the first round, indicating brutal punching power.

The World Boxing Organization was informed by Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Omar Nino Romero had a disciplinary fine in the amount of $11,250.00 pending since 2006. 

WBO President, Francisco Valcarcel contacted Chairman Hon. Juan Ramon Guanzon, from the Games and Amusement Board in the Philippines to inform him that the scheduled WBO Flyweight Championship Bout between Brian Viloria and Omar Nino Romero to be held on March 31, 2012 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Manila, Philippines was pending sanction until such time when the fine was appropriately dealt with.

Valcarcel has also informed Mr. Fernando Beltran from Promociones Zanfer, and Viloria’s manager, Mr. Gary Gittlesohn that when the monies are deposited in NSAC, the scheduled bout will be sanctioned.
