SHANGHAI – China’s rising star Ik Yang captured the WBO Asia Pacific Lightweight Title by knocking out scrappy Thai Sukkasem Kietyongyuth in the 8th round Tuesday night at the ultra-modern Mercedez-Benz Arena at the Pudong disctrict here in front of a raucous Chinese crowd that cheered Yang’s every punch.

The heavy-handed Yang, with an undefeated record of 17 wins with 12 knockouts, floored Kietyongyuth (13-3-0) right in the first round but the game Thai came back to score potshots of his own against the flat-footed Chinese. However it was clear that Yang landed the more damaging blows in the course of the fight. In the 8th round, Yang connected with a devastating blow to take out Kietyongyuth for good as the hapless Thai remained in the canvas for several minutes being helped by the ringside medical team.

Ik Yang will now move on to fight in the undercard of the huge Pacquiao-Algieri boxing card on Nov. 23 in Macau.

SHANGHAI- Chinese boxing fans are expected to troop to the Mercedes Benz Arena today for “FIST OF POWER”, a live event that will feature Ik Yang (15-0, 9 KOs) of Dalian, China against Sukkasem Kietyongyuth (13-2, 8 KOs), of Roi-Et, Thailand for the WBO Asia-Pacific lightweight title.

The August 26 card also has something to offer for the Filipino fight fans – Randy “Razor” Petalcorin (21-1-1,16KO’s) of Gen. Santos City will go up against Walter Tello (20-7,8KO’s) of Panama for the interim WBA world light flyweight title.

It is not just Filipino boxers, but Filipino ring officials have also become a regular presence in boxing promotions held in China. When Top Rank started their first high profile boxing event – FISTS OF GOLD – in Macau last April 2013, ring officials of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) headed by its president Paco Valcarcel and WBO Vice-President for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo were among those who handled and supervised the birth of big time boxing promotions in this country. This started the influx of experienced boxing officials from the Philippines who provided their expertise in the professional side of the sport. They have formed a good partnership with Thai,Australian and Chinese boxing officials.

Panoncillo is currently the driving force and head of the Professional Boxing Commission of China (PBCC). Aside from supervising events, he has conducted workshops for Chinese boxing officials who are interested in learning how professional bouts are conducted and supervised. One example was the demonstration on the proper taping or wrapping of a boxer’s hand and gloves which was held after today’s FIST OF POWER weigh-in at the Sheraton Hotel.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPHOTO – PBCC and WBO Asia-Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo demonstrates handwrapping on chief dressing room and handwraps inspector Romar Embodo as WBO As-Pac board member Danny Leigh and PBCC Executive Sec. Maggie Wei Na look on.

Panoncillo, who also has the experience of being a boxing trainer, showed the legal way of handwrapping as well as the illegal way to make inspectors aware of any shenanigans happening inside the fighters’ dressing room.

In various boxing events in Macau and in mainland China, the PBCC has conducted itself in a professional manner and has trained aspiring officials to do things the right way. It also has been responsible in the way they provide licenses, conduct the needed medical requirements for boxers and make sure the proper emergency facilities are available.

“Pro boxing is new and still growing here, If they start doing things the right way, the rest will be easy.” Panoncillo said.   Top Rank has tied up with SECA to build the growth of pro boxing here in China. SECA CEO Sheng Li stated in today’s presscon that they still don’t have much knowledge in pro boxing in China, hence his partnership with Top Rank. Looking at the steady increase of boxing promotions in this country, it has been mutually beneficial for both parties. The PBCC has also become a steady and reliable presence.

The Tuesday fight card in Shanghai has seven Chinese boxers. Aside from Petalcorin, another Filipino boxer, Marlon Alta (12-4,9KO’s) will be pitted against Qu Peng (5-0-1,3KO’s) of China in a non-title light heavyweight match-up.

By Ronnie Nathanielsz –

Undefeated 22 year old Genesis Servania, regarded as one of the more promising prospects from the famed ALA Gym faces a tough challenge from Rafael “El Torito” Concepcionr who scored a 10th round knockout over AJ “Bazooka in a WBA super flyweight interim title fight at the Cebu C oliseum on July 26, 2008.

The WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight title defense of Servania will take place at the at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino on October 26 and will be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN on its top-rating “Pinoy Pride” series over Channel 2 and will also be carried globally on The Filipino Channel which is widely watched especially in the Middle East.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer who  was with vice president Dennis Canete in a luncheon meeting with ABS-CBN’s Peter Musngi informed the Manila Standard that they had received the signed contract from Concepcion only on Wednesday. Concepcion had also faced Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and dropped a twelve round unanimous decision on August 15, 2009.

In case the Concepcion fight didn’t push through ALA Promotions was considering featherweight Ruben “Canelito” Tamayo as a replacement just in case Concepcion failed to send them the signed contract.

Tamayo is coming of a majority draw against undefeated Filipino Jun Doliguez last July 20 in Mexico and is an accomplished fighter with a record of 22-4-4- with 16 knockouts and gave the fancied Doliguez a hard fight.

The 22 year old Servania is coming off an exciting war with Japan’s Konosuke Tomiyama on the undercard of the WBO flyweight title fight which Milan Melindo lost after a gallant stand against Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada who had earlier won the title from WBO/WBA champion Brian Viloria.

In an action-packed battle Servania was dropped twice in the opening round but came back to drop Tomiyana late in the opening round and once again in the third before winning a 9th round technical decision after being cut on the eyelid because of an accidental head-butt and was ruled unfit to continue.

Story and photos by David Finger

The 26th Annual WBO Congress in Budapest, Hungary came to a conclusion yesterday with the ever popular final day event: the Championship and Ratings committee meetings.

The final day’s events kicked off as President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel and the board entertained motions from the floor from various promoters in regards to their fighters. Although there was little movement in regards to the lighter weights President Valcarcel confirmed that mini-flyweight champion Merilito Sabillo of the Philippines is slated to fight #1 ranked Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua in Dubai in November. At 108-pounds it was confirmed that junior flyweight champion Donnie Nietes of the Philippines is cut and will be sidelined for a short period of time. #1 ranked Moises Fuentes of Mexico is slated to fight for a International title, a move that will certainly position him for the mandatory slot when Nietes recovers from his cut. At flyweight President Valcarcel and the board confirmed that Mexican champion Juan Francisco Estrada will need to fight a mandatory defense in his next fight. Promoter Fernando Beltran requested that the winner of the November 7th matchup between #1 ranked Giovani Segura and #2 ranked Hernan Tyson Marquez, both of Mexico, declared the mandatory challenger for the champion. The board unanimously agreed.

At junior bantamweight champion Omar Narvaez of Argentina, who is coming off a split decision victory over #1 ranked Felipe Orucuta of Mexico is slated to fight in February. No word on if it will be a rematch of his war with Orucuta, who looks poised to remain at #1. Dean Powell pushed to have Paul Butler (the #13 ranked fighter) move into the top ten after his next fight on September 21st. Butler is slated to fight undefeated Miguel Gonzales for the vacant WBO Intercontinental title. The board seemed receptive to the idea of Butler moving into the top ten if he were to defeat Gonzales. At bantamweight President Valcarcel confirmed that new champion Tomoki Kameda would have six months to fight his mandatory defense as he only recently won his title.

At junior featherweight the discussion was in regards to champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and his first defense. Jesse Magdaleno (the #8 ranked NABO Youth champion) and the #1 contender Chris Avalos (the NABO champion) were both mentioned as Top Rank pushed to have their fighters positioned into a title fight. A big round of applause followed for former world champion Barry McGuigan, who was there to represent undefeated British prospect Carl Frampton (16-0). Frampton, who is ranked #14, now looks poised to enter the top ten.

At featherweight the big discussion was over the fight between #1 ranked Orlando Cruz and #3 ranked Orlando Salido. That fight, which is scheduled to take place on October 12th for the vacant world title. There was a push to introduce Oscar Gonzalez (23-2) into the world rankings based on his impressive win over Rico Ramos as well as a push for undefeated Filipino prospect Jun Doliguez (16-0) to move up the ranks. Doliguez is ranked #9. The next discussion was over a fighter who is quickly becoming the most talked about rookie in recent memory: debuting amateur standout Vasyl Lomachenko. Lomachenko, who is slated to fight tough Jonathan Oquendo in his first pro fight, now will be fighting Oquendo for the vacant WBO International title. Despite some concern over allowing a debuting fighter to fight for a WBO belt, the board was nearly unanimous in recognizing what a unique and special talent Lomachenko is.

“Thank God there was no Lomachenko in my division at the time,” former Olympic gold medalist Istvan “Koko” Kovacs said, “I never saw a fighter like him before.”

The board approved Lomachenko for the title fight, making his planned world title fight in his second professional fight a more realistic scenario assuming he can get past the seasoned Jonathan Oquendo. Representatives for #5 ranked Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo of Thailand asked to have their fighter move up the ranks after the planned clash between the # and #3 ranked contenders.

At junior lightweight the WBO confirmed it was issuing a letter to champion Roman Martinez of Puerto Rico, informing him that he now has 30 days to begin negotiations for a fight with #1 ranked Miguel Angel Garcia.

In the lightweight division it was confirmed that champion Ricky Burns would fight #6 ranked Raymundo Beltran on September 7th. From there the board confirmed that Burns would need to begin negotiations with Terrence Crawford, the #1 contender, by December. Undefeated Denis Shafikov of Russia looked poised to move up as well from the #3 slot. In a bit of a shocker, promoter Fernando Beltran told the board that #12 ranked junior welterweight Jose Zepada was now moving down in weight to campaign at lightweight.

In the junior welterweight division the board voted to approve allowing Juan Manuel Marquez to enter the ring against Tim Bradley as WBO champion on October 12th. Mike Alvarado would then be declared the full champion after October 12th. A request to move #3 Serhiy Fedchenko up also came from the floor.

In the welterweight division Dean Powell asked to have #8 ranked Frankie Gavin move up in the ranks as he is slated to fight on September 21st for the European title. In junior middleweight some controversy arose over the next fight of #4 ranked Brian Rose. Both Charlie Ota of Japan (who is ranked #11) and Javier Maciel of Argentina (who is ranked #5) appeared to have an fight against Rose at the same time. After a round of phone calls it was confirmed that Rose would be fighting Maciel and not Ota in his next fight. Fernando Beltran also asked to have Omar Chavez, son of Julio Cesar Chavez, enter the world rankings. Dean Powell asked to have Liam Smith, who is challenging for a British title, move into the world rankings as well.

At middleweight it was confirmed that #1 ranked Brian Vera (the NABO champion) was slated to fight #2 ranked Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on September 28th. Champion Peter Quillin is slated to fight on October 26th. Several promoters moved to have their fighters positioned for an elimination fight as the Vera-Chavez fight created an opening for other fighters looking to move up in the rankings. #4 ranked Lukas Konecny of the Czech Republic and #5 ranked Max Bursak of the Ukraine look poised to emerge as the frontrunners to take part in an elimination fight. #15 ranked Patrick Neilsen of Denmark looks poised to crack into the top ten as well.

At 168-pounds there was a push to move Paul Smith into the rankings. #4 ranked Arthur Abraham looks poised to move into the #1 slot off the basis of his win last week. WBO champion Robert Stieglitz is slated to fight in October, and may end up fighting a rubber match with Abraham after that. When asked is Stieglitz would be willing to fight Abraham in a mandatory, Hedi Taouab indicated he would be.

“It’s for the WBO to decide,” Taouab said, “we are ready to negotiate and talk.”

Arthur Abraham was subsequently voted into the #1 ranking by the board.

At light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev has 120 days to defend his title. #13 ranked Erik Skoglund of Sweeden is slatefd to gfight #14 ranked Dominic Boesel of Germany in a rare WBO youth unification fight. At cruiserweight Marco Huck is slated to fight #1 ranked Firat Arslan on September 14th. #7 ranked Mateusz Masternak of Poland is slated to fight #14 ranked Grigory Droz of Germany on October 5th and wants to move up in the rankings as well. At heavyweight the discussion was over WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko’s 27-month gap since he fought a WBO mandatory challenger. With Klitschko fighting Alex Povetkin on October 5th, there was an issue over the fact that, according to President Valcarcel, the top ranked contenders of the WBO didn’t meet the “criteria for a mandatory”. #1 ranked Denis Boytsov is now slated to fight #11 ranked Christian Hammer. With #2 ranked Bermane Stiverne now the WBC mandatory for Klitschko it did look likely that Boytsov’s long wait may be over and the WBO may award him the mandatory slot if he emerges victorious over Hammer. There was a push to have #5 ranked Deontay Wilder fight for the vacant NABO title as well, and a push to have #13 eanked Andy Ruiz move up into the top ten. Dean Powell also pushed to have #15 ranked Dereck Chisora move up into the top ten on the basis of his knockout win over undefeated Malik Scott.

“His losses have been only at the highest level,” Powell said, “and some are very controversial.”

WBO Vice President Leon Panoncillo pushed to have Alex Leapai versus Andy Ruiz for the WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental championship in Macao in November as well.

From there several awards were handed out, with Liam Welch being awarded the European fighter of the year award, Tia Yi being awarded the matchmaker of the year for China, and the Sports Management Group being awarded the Promoter of the Year. The Japan Boxing Association presented a letter to the WBO and Mario Margossian was awarded a special recognition award. The location of the 2014 and 2015 conventions were decided as well, with Las Vegas, Nevada being the host to the 2014 convention, with Puerto Rico as the backup. In a bit of a surprise, the Philippines will be the location of the 2015 Convention , with Cebu and Manila as the most likely venues.

Rounding off the 26th annual convention was the gala dinner, held at the Udvarhaz restaurant. Hungarian President János Áder attended the event, speaking to the crowd about Hungary’s proud (and at times) tragic history of great boxers. Ader’s moving tribute to Lazlo Papp brought many of the attendees to their feet as they applauded the Hungarian head of state. Rounding off the evening were the remaining awards which were handed out. Frank Warren was awarded the European promoter of the year while Dominic Boesel was awarded the WBO Youth fighter of the year. Robert Stieglitz was awarded the Gordy Volkman Award for outstanding humanitarian qualities. Poriyakoon Ratauasuban was awarded the WBO Oriental Promoter of the year while Michael Aldesguer was awarded the WBO International Promoter of the year. Felix Zabala was awarded the WBO Latino promoter of the year while Ulf Steinforth was awarded the WBO European promoter of the year as well as the European female fighter promoter of the year. Dean Powell was named matchmaker fo the year while Eddie Hearn was awarded a WBO Intercontinental special recognition award. Wilfried Sauerland was awarded a special recognition award as well. Hungary’s three most noteworthy former champions: Istvan Kovacs, Zsolt Erdei, and Karoly Balzsay were each awarded special recognition awards while Don King was awarded a “Greatest Legend in Boxing History” award. Rounding off the ceremony, Wladimir Klitschko was named WBO fighter of the year.

Hengyang, CHINA–Australia’s Alex “Lionheart” Leapai proved true to his moniker after he eked out a workmanlike stoppage win over the very game Mexican heavyweight fighter Felipe Romero at the jampacked Hengyang Stadium here, in the process retaining his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific heavyweight title.

The Samoa-born Leapai, who came in at 110 kilograms at the weigh-in prior to the bout, applied pressure all throughout the bout, but found himself at the receiving end of Romero’s jabs and body shots along the way. Fighting with blood oozing from his nostrils, Romero tried to outbox Leapai, but could not handle the power of the reigning champion.

Leapai scored the first knockdown of the night right at the get-go, sending Romero crashing to the canvas for the count, but could not put away the fleet-footed heavyweight Mexican who danced his way out of harm’s way.

The end came at the 2:13 mark of the ninth round after Leapai sent Romero twice to the canvas, prompting referee Bruce McTavish to put an end to the fight.

Leapai was quoted as saying he broke his hand in the first round, which could have explained why he could not finished Romero earlier than expected.

At the time of the stoppage, both judges Salven Lagumbay and Danrex Tapdasan of the Philippines scored the bout 77-74 for Leapai while Thailand’s Sawaeng Thaweekon saw it at 78-73 in favor of the Queensland-based heavyweight. With the win, Leapai improved to 29 wins, 4 losses, 3 draws with with 24 knockouts. Romero dipped to 16 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw with 11 knockouts.

Supervisor for the fight was WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo assisted by WBO Australia representative Danny Leigh.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, promoter Liu Gang also sponsored a seminar for officials conducted by the WBO, where Chinese pro boxing officials learned tips from veteran fight officials Bruce McTavish, Salven Lagumbay, Sawaeng Thaweekon, and Danrex Tapdasan.

The aim was to improve pro boxing officiating in China, said the 42-year-old Liu Gang, one of China’s biggest promoters.

The World Boxing Organization will make a special belt for the winner of what promises to be an all-out action fight between “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao and exciting Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios at the Cotai Arena in the sprawling Venetian Resort Hotel on November 24.

WBO Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo announced that Pacquiao and Rios will fight for the WBO International welterweight title and “a special belt is being made for the winner” of what both Panoncillo and WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel said one of “the most spectaculatr events in the world. It will be huge.”

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who joined the two fighters and their trainers on a promotional tour which kicked off in Beijing on Monday and will have a press conference on Tuesday, said he expects the television coverage “to reach more people than the last Olympic Games in China (in 2008)” even as the fights being staged in Macau now emphasizes that the world is a very small place.”

Pacquiao and former world champion raced up the Great Wall of China, one of the great wonders of the world, Monday in Beijing, China.

Both fighters are making a stop in Beijing as part of their world-wide media tour which will also include stops in Shanghai, Singapore, New York and finally ending up in Los Angeles.

Arum promised that the Top Rank card on November 24 “will be outstanding because Pacquiao vs Rios is a very exciting title fight.”

Arum emphasized that Macau “is not just about gaming, it’s about bringing all sorts of entertainment and this event will do that.”

He said “people will be coming from all over, especially from the Philippines” which is less thnan two hours away by plane and since the Venetian “will be offering special packages for fans from the Philippines” where Pacquiao is not merely a two-term congressman but a hero to millions.

LES “Lock N Load” Sherrington of Australia won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific middleweight title win in front of his hometown fans in Townsville, Queensland, Australia Friday night by beating Filipino Randy “Komong Bato” Suico by technical knockout in the eighth round.

The 30 year-old Sherrington, who also holds the World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Middleweight championship belt, will boost his top ten ranking with the World Boxing Organization (WBO) by virtue of his latest victory. He improves his career record to 30 wins (18 KOs) and six losses.

The 33 year-old Suico on the other hand, has suffered three losses in his last four bouts. The Cebuano’s last win was on November 27, 2010 against countryman Arnel Tinampay by majority decision. Suico’s career record dropped to 30W-8L-1D with 25 stoppages. /Correspondent Rene Bonsubre Jr.

MANDAUE CITY – If it wasn’t for the welts all over his face and the band-aid across his right eyebrow, Romnick Magos would not have stood out among the faces at ringside inside the Mandaue Sports Complex Sunday night. I knew he just arrived from Manila and he had a fight against Aston Palicte in Taguig City but I was not aware of the result.

“How did the fight go?” I asked him.

“I won.” He smiled.

I was a bit surprised to be honest, Palicte was undefeated in ten pro bouts. Magos on the other hand, was coming off a points loss in Thailand against Rusalee Samor.

“He knocked me down in the first round. I was groggy.” He said, “But I managed to continue fighting and we exchanged hard punches. I knocked him down in rounds 3 and 4. I won by TKO.”

Palicte did not come out of his corner after the 4th.Magos, from Mabinay, Negros Oriental, proudly displayed his WBO Youth Asia Pacific flywieght belt when he was introduced before the fight card’s main event between Marco Demecillo Singwangcha and Jessie Tuyor. Thai boxing patron Naris Singwangcha was also at ringside and congratulated Magos.

The 21 year old Magos is now 8W-2L, 4 KO’s. His name is known only to the hardcore fans here in Cebu who frequent small fight cards. He has a crowd pleasing rough housing style which finally earned him the first belt of his career last Saturday. His stablemates from the Rex ‘Wakee’ Salud gym of Cebu celebrated with him.

Brian Viloria and Drian Francisco’s statement-making knockout victories over their respective Mexican opponents over the weekend were not the only reasons to celebrate for last Sunday as the power-punching Warlito “Wars Katsumata” Parrenas of Japan’s Katsumata Gym also won by knockout against Indonesia’s top 115-pounder and current WBO Asia Pacific Super Flyweight champion, Isack Junior at the Ginowan Convention Center in Okinawa, Japan.

The knockout specialist who hails from Bacolod, Negros Occidental but is now living in the town of Koiwa in Tokyo, Japan reportedly put the Indonesian down courtesy of a right straight-left uppercut combination in the final round of their 8-round match-up. Thereafter, due to the hard punches, the latter failed to beat the count signaling the referee to wave the contest off at 0:26 seconds and declare him the winner by 8th-round knockout. Reportedly, the Indonesian had even stayed down for three minutes after the stoppage.

With the win, he improves his record to 18 wins with 6 defeats (16 of the wins coming by way of knockout) while the Indonesian gets his third defeat in 25 bouts with 20 wins and 2 draws (8 by knockout). Furthermore, since the fight was done in the Super Flyweight division, he automatically becomes #3 by the JBC from his previous #1 rating in the Flyweight class.

This writer had the privilege to have a chat with him online a couple of days after the fight and asked him a few things about his win and what’s next for him. According to him, he was very thankful that he came out with his hands raised because as per Katsumata Promotions, his promoter/manager, and his trainer, Venezuelan Santiago Caballero, he might get the chance to challenge the reigning WBO Super Flyweight champion, Omar Andres “El Huracan” Narvaez of Argentina (37-1-2, 20 KOs) by February or March next year. This development is being worked out for him following the good news that WBO is now recognized by the Boxing Commission of Japan (JBC).

In the other fights involving Filipinos:

Upcoming 22-year old bantamweight prospect, Vergel “Ilocano Superman” Nebran (8-4-1, 6 KOs) of Bani, Pangasinan and the Elorde Boxing Gym lost via 10-round split decision to local prospect, Masamichi “Mexican Man” Nozaki (16-3-0, 6 KOs) despite knocking the latter down in the 4th round. At the end, the scores were 95-94 twice favoring the Japanese with the third judge giving it to him with the same score, 95-94.

Another Elorde-trained boxer, Jaypee “The Hammer” Otilla of Parañaque City by way of Guinobatan, Albay (9-5-2, 6 KOs) was stopped at 1:15 of the 2nd round by Go Onaga (18-2-2, 13 KOs).

Fight fans in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental will get a chance to see reigning WBO light flyweight world champion Donnie “Ahas’ Nietes of the ALA Gym in a non-title bout against Danai Meendaeng of Thailand at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center this Saturday November 17.

Nietes weighed in at 110 lbs while Meendaeng was a pound lighter during the official weigh-in held Thursday noon. Nietes will try to duplicate the spectacular second round TKO win scored by his stablemate “Prince” Albert Pagara against another Thai, Tawanrung Eausampan in Maasin City, Southern Leyte last Thursday. Pagara had earlier vowed to avenge AJ Banal’s loss to Pungluang Sor Singyu.

This will also serve as a tune-up for Nietes (30W-1L-3D, 16 KO’s) as he prepares for his mandatory defense early next year against WBO minimumweight champion Moises Fuentes of Mexico.
In his last fight, Nietes beat Mexican Felipe Salguero by unanimous decision last June at the Resorts World in Pasay City for the first defense of his 108 lb division title.

Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca (35W-6L-3D, 20 KO’s) will face Jaypee ignacio (8W-14L-2D, 2 KO’s) of Quezon City in another ten rounder. Jaca weighed in at 140 lbs while Ignacio was a pound heavier.

Last August, Jaca showed he still has what it takes to fight on prime time when he beat Angel Martinez of Mexico by 8th round knockout at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. In his last fight, Ignacio lost on points to Philippine jr.welterweight champion Adones Cabalquinto last August in Mandaluyong City. There are four more bouts scheduled on the undercards.

After winning over Alejandro Anas last weekend at the Mandaluyong City Sports Complex, Jay Solmiano (13-2-1, 9 KOs) is now targeting a ring date with reigning Philippine lightwelterweight champ Adones Cabalquinto after becoming the official mandatory challenger for the latter’s title.

The hard hitting Cabalquinto won the PHL lightwelterweight crown against Dan Nazareno last March in Lapu-Lapu City via unanimous decision in a Fight of the Year candidate.

According to local boxing promoter and trainer Joven Jimenez, negotiations are expected to commence the soonest to make the bout official.

Cabalquinto said he is excited to defend his crown against Solmiano. The Talaingod, Davao del Norte boxer said he welcomes the possibility of trading leathers with the 140-pounder from San Andres, Catanduanes. But he challenged Solmiano to face him in a WBO Asia Pacific duel rather than just for his Philippine title.

“Wala ko nahadlok anang Jay Solmiano. Fight ko ana nya bisan kanus-a ug bisan asa. Pero kung mag-away mi, mas maayo tingali kung ang makadaug mahimong world-rated. Mao nga maayo pa WBO Asia Pacific belt na lang among awayan,”said the 24 year old Cabalquinto.

Cabalquinto is managed by Jimenez while Solmiano, 25, is handled by young boxing promoters Ryan Gabriel and June Camille Razon Baltazar. Both boxers stand at 5′ 8″ and are both southpaws.

After winning the Philippine title, Cabalquinto fought two more times this year against Jaypee Ignacio in non-title ten-rounders winning both fights via unanimous decision. Their first fight was last May 11 in Aparri, Cagayan while the second was held last Aug. 16 in Mandaluyong City.

Solmiano on the other hand, suffered two consecutive losses. Last Oct. 4, 2011 he lost to Japanese Nihito Arakawa via split decision in an OPBF lightweight championship in Japan while on March 4, 2012 he bowed to Rey Labao via 1st round TKO in a Philippine lightweight championship in Cebu.

Solmiano rebounded from those losses by beating Thai Singdet Sithsaithong via 4th round KO last June 30 in Makati City and knocking out Anas in the 2nd round last Aug. 18 in Mandaluyong City.

Reigning Philippine junior welterweight champion Adones “The Undertaker” Cabalquinto remained unbeaten last Thursday when he outpointed Jaypee Ignacio in an entertaining non-title bout in Mandaluyong City. The 24 year old Cabalquinto (13-0, 8 KOs) and his manager and promoter Joven Jimenez are now setting their sights on bigger things.

Their immediate concern is meeting the challenge of the camp of former Philippine lightweight champ Jay “Rapido” Solmiano (13-2-1, 9 KOs), who has been itching to put their boxer as the mandatory challenger for Cabalquinto’s domestic crown.

Reacting to comments that Cabalquinto can be beaten, Promoter Jimenez e-mailed this writer stating that Team Cabalquinto has issued a challenge to Solmiano to face him in a WBO Asia Pacific showdown in the 140-lb. division, instead of the Philippine championship that he is now holding.

Speaking in his native dialect, Cabalquinto stated that “Wala ko nahadlok anang Jay Solmiano. Fight ko ana nya bisan kanus-a ug bisan asa. Pero kung mag-away mi duha nga pareho prospect, ako tan-aw mas maayo tingali kung ang makadaug mahimong world-rated. Mao nga maayo pa WBO Asia Pacific belt na lang among awayan.”

(I am not in any way afraid of fighting Jay Solmiano. I will fight him anytime and anywhere. But to face a fellow Filipino prospect like me, I think it would be very rewarding for the winner to land in the world rankings. So, I believe its best that we fight for the WBO Asia Pacific belt.)

Cabalquinto knows that owning a WBO regional title would guarantee him a spot in the world rankings. The 25 year old Solmiano (13-2-1, 9 KOs) is from San Andres, Catanduanes and is a former Philippine lightweight champion. He is handled by the tandem of equally young boxing managers/promoters Ryan Gabriel and June Camille Razon Baltazar. The two southpaws are evenly matched physically.

Solmiano suffered 2 consecutive losses to Japanese Nihito Arakawa via split decision in an OPBF lightweight championship last October in Japan and to Rey Labao last March by a stunning 1st round TKO in their Philippine lightweight championship battle Cebu. Solmiano has bounced back from those losses by beating Thai Singdet Sithsaithong via 4th round KO last June 30 in Makati City and knocking out Alejandro Anas in the 2nd round last August 18 in Mandaluyong City.

Cabalquinto was an interested spectator inside the boxing venue when Solmiano beat Anas last weekend in Mandaluyong City.

Cabalquinto, who hails from Talaingod, Davao Del Norte, won the Philippine 140 lb division title in a ‘Fight of the Year’ candidate against the tough Dan Nazareno by unanimous decision at the Hoops Dome, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. This fight established Cabalquinto as one of the best 140 lb boxers in the country.

“He may have watched his next opponent if his wish to fight for a regional belt becomes a reality,”Jimenez said, “Now, it’s up to Jay Solmiano and his team to stand up and accept the challenge or instead look at another direction.”

Adones Cabalquinto (13-0, 8 KOs) is the reigning Light Welterweight Champion of the Philippines after winning the national diadem on March 17 against grizzled veteran Dan Nazareno (16-9, 12 KOs) via a 12-round unanimous decision at the Hoops Dome, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu in a candidate for Fight of the Year.

After being declared the best 140-pounder in the Philippines, personalities from the local boxing scene have observed that the camp of former Philippine lightweight champ Jay Solmiano (13-2-1, 9 KOs) has been itching to put their boxer in as the mandatory challenger for Cabalquinto’s domestic crown.

These observations have been proven to be accurate and in fact Solmiano at present is indeed the mandatory challenger for the Philippine 140-lb. belt of Cabalquinto. There were even unconfirmed reports that Solmiano’s trainers were overheard telling their friends in the boxing community that Solmiano is a better fighter than Cabalquinto and their boxer would surely beat the current Philippine champ if they meet in the ring.

Pressed for his reaction on this recent observations and reports, Cabalquinto’s face lightened up and he appeared very excited to know that Solmiano seems very desperate to take his hard-earned title. Asked if he would be willing to defend his Philippine title to his fellow Filipino prospect, the Talaingod, Davao Del Norte native gladly welcomed the possibility of trading leathers with the 140-pounder from San Andres, Catanduanes but instead revealed his proposal in their future fight.

Realizing that owning a WBO regional title would guarantee a fighter a spot in the world rankings, Cabalquinto issued a challenge to Solmiano to face him in a WBO Asia Pacific showdown in the 140-lb. division, instead of the Philippine championship that he is now holding. Speaking in his native dialect, he said “Wala ko nahadlok anang Jay Solmiano. Fight ko ana nya bisan kanus-a ug bisan asa. Pero kung mag-away mi duha nga pareho prospect, ako tan-aw mas maayo tingali kung ang makadaug mahimong world-rated. Mao nga maayo pa WBO Asia Pacific belt na lang among awayan.” (I am not in any way afraid of fighting Jay Solmiano. I will fight him anytime and anywhere. But to face a fellow Filipino prospect like me, I think it would be very rewarding for the winner to land in the world rankings. So, I believe its best that we fight for the WBO Asia Pacific belt.)

Cabalquinto, 24, is managed by young boxing manager and promoter Joven Jimenez while Solmiano, 25, is handled by the tandem of equally young boxing managers/promoters Ryan Gabriel and June Camille Razon Baltazar.

“The Undertaker” and “Rapido” are like mirror images of each other as they both are 5′ 8″ southpaws at the prime of their boxing careers.

After winning the Philippine title, Cabalquinto fought 2 more times this year against the same opponent in Jaypee Ignacio in non-title ten-rounders winning both fights via unanimous decision, the first one last May 11 in Aparri, Cagayan and the second last August 16 in Mandaluyong City. On the other hand, Solmiano suffered 2 consecutive losses last October 4, 2011 to Japanese Nihito Arakawa via split decision in an OPBF lightweight championship in Japan and March 4, 2012 to Rey Labao via 1st round TKO in a Philippine lightweight championship in Cebu. Cabalquinto was an interested spectator inside the boxing venue when Solmiano beat Anas last weekend in Mandaluyong City. He may have watched his next opponent if his wish would come true.

Now, it’s up to Jay Solmiano and his team to stand up and accept the challenge or instead look at another direction.

FREDERIX Rodriguez is obviously taking his underdog tag in stride. But that doesn’t mean he will just be a willing punching bag when he battles heavily favored Vincent “Popeye” Palicte (14-3-1, 7 KOs) in their Aug. 16 showdown for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight title at the Mandaluyong Sports Complex.

In fact, the Bukidnon slugger is setting his sights on a major upset on fight night.

Rodriguez (8-2-1, 6 KOs) who trains for the title fight for more than two months in Valencia Bukidnon under the supervision of manager Roel Kaamino and trainer Jake Verano, announced that they are totally ready for this fight.

“I am very excited to fight in Mandaluyong to win the title and take it home to Bukidnon,” declared Rodriguez.

Verano on the other hand, said his ward is ripe for the crown and declared that they have prepared Rodriguez to do battle for the full 12 rounds should an early knockout prove elusive.

“We know that we are the underdog and Palicte is a very experienced fighter, but we will do our best to score an upset,” said Verano who is himself a former boxer.

Verano, who claimed to have seen some of Palicte’s bouts, said that the latter has a very tight defense and has good technical skills. But he said Rodriguez has immense power which they will use to hurt Palicte right from the opening bell.

“I am developing my aggressiveness inside the ring to compliment my power for this fight. If I hit him hard, I am sure he will kiss the canvas,” dded Rodriguez.

Team Rodriguez will arrive in Manila this Wednesday and will head straight to the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) office for the official weigh-in.

FORMER WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight champion Jimrex “Executioner” Jaca has definitely learned his lessons the hard way in his 12-year professional boxing career.

After hopping from one manager to another and being labelled a journeyman, Jaca finally decided to return to ALA Boxing Promotions where his dreams of becoming a top boxer started.

Thanks to ALA Boxing Promotions, Jaca (34-6-3,19KOs) got a second chance to revive his boxing career by featuring him in the undercard of Pinoy Pride XV: Philippines vs. Mexico: The Rematch against Mexican Angel Martinez (13-2-1, 9KOs).

The Aug. 18 card will be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Considered as local boxing’s prodigal son, Jaca promised to change that not so pleasant image.

“Not everyone know that I am not just a fighter. I also have a wife and a child to support. Yes, I have been criticized for being disloyal for jumping from one promoter to another, but I am thankful to ALA for giving me another chance,” said Jaca who left ALA Promotions in 2010.

“I have already apologized to Sir Tony Aldeguer and ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer for what happened in the past. They understood me and gave me another chance to prove that I can do it. And I won’t waste this opportunity as this could be my last,” said  Jaca.

It was found out in an interview that true enough, Jaca underwent some very tough times in 2010. His wife was having problems with her pregnancy resulting in several trips to the hospital. He kept these distractions to himself and never opened up. He and his wife eventually lost their child due to premature birth.

Now, the Negros Occidental-born boxer is getting a new lease on his boxing life and vows never to put this chance go to waste as he trains with renewed vigor for his Aug. 18 bout with Martinez.

The Palicte vs Rodriguez undercard bouts gives hard core fight fans a chance to size up other prospects.

Jerwin Ancajas (13-1-1, 5 KOs) will fight John Mark Bautista (10-6-1, 4 KOs) in a 10-round super flyweight match. Ancajas will be eager to bounce back after he suffered his first defeat in a tough majority decision loss to another talented prospect, Mark Anthony Geraldo last March in Cebu.

Undefeated Aston Palicte (9-0-0, 7 KOs), Vincent’s younger brother, will face by Mark Joseph Costa (4-5-2, 1 KO), known for being the last opponent of the late Karlo Maquinto. Jerson Luzarito (6-1-1) fights Marzon Cabilla (9-7) in another ten rounder.

Reigning Philippine junior welterweight champion Adones ‘The Undertaker’ Cabalquinto (12-0-0, 8 KOs) of Top Contender Boxing Gym will engage in a 10-round non-title fight against Jaypee Ignacio of Elorde Gilmore, Quezon City. Cabalquinto gave Cebu fans a ring war to remember when he beat Dan Nazareno last March by twelve round unanimous decision at the Lapu-lapu City Hoops Dome.

A special attraction will be the fight between the young and unbeaten Joebert Alvarez (10-0-0, 4 KOs) against the tough veteran Nelson Llanos (22-28-3, 9 KO’s). Alvarez was one of the standouts in the boxing reality show “Buhay Boksingero”.

This boxing event will be covered by GMA TV Network. General admission for this event is FREE TO THE PUBLIC.

ASIDE from seeking revenge against his tormentor Mexican Rosbel “Lobo” Montoya, Cagayan de Oro’s Jason “El Niño” Pagara will also be aiming to break into the rankings of the WBO when both face off this Aug. 18 in the main event of Pinoy Pride XV:Philippines Vs. Mexico: The Rematch at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

“I am hoping Pagara will win this rematch because it will not just ease the pain he had a year ago but this is also his chance to be included in the rankings of WBO,” said  Pagara’s manager and promoter Michael Aldeguer.

The veteran Mexican Montoya (34-1-4, 29 KOs) handed Pagara his second defeat last year. The Filipino is looking to avenge that loss as he is now in his final stages of training.

ALA Boxing Gym’s trainers Joseph Baldago, brothers Edito and Edmund Villamor said  Pagara (28-2,17 KOs) has improved a lot.

“He already sparred more than a hundred rounds against ALA Boxing Gym’s bigger boxers in the welterweight division and he is getting sharper and sharper day by day,” said Baldago during yesterday’s public workout at the SM City Consolacion.

“I am very thankful for this opportunity and I am not letting this fight slip again,” said Pagara. “I will make sure that I will win. If Montoya fights the same way he did last year, then I can knock him out.”

Meanwhile, Bacolod’s undefeated Genesis Servania (18-0, 6 KOs) is also geared up to face Mexican Jorge Pazos (20-3, 13 KOs) for the WBO Asia Pacific superbantamweight title.

According to Aldeguer,  the former manager of WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley plans to schedule a fight for Servania abroad in the future.

“He first liked Milan Melindo a lot until he saw Servania fight Genaro Garcia last June.”

Present during yesterday’s public workout were Jimrex “Executioner” Jaca (39-6-3, 19 KOs), who will battle Mexican Angel “Arcangel” Martinez (13-9-1, 9 KOs) in an eight-round non-title bout, and Jason’s younger brother Prince Albert, who will be also featured in the undercard. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G.
