El Campeón Mundial Mini-Mosca de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), el puertorriqueño Wilfredo “Bimbito” Méndez, expondrá por segunda ocasión su corona cuando enfrente al retador ecuatoriano Pedro “El Insoportable” Villegas, en el combate estelar del evento “Torneo de Campeones de la OMB”, que se llevará a cabo el próximo sábado 8 de febrero, en el Hotel El Panamá, de Ciudad Panamá.

El anuncio de esta cartelera fue hecho este martes, en el Salón Topascio del Hotel El Panamá, en Ciudad Panamá, en donde el Presidente de la OMB, el puertorriqueño Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel, estuvo presente, junto a los representantes de la promotoras que unen fuerzas por este evento: G&V Enternainment y Spartan Boxing de Panamá, junto a PR Best Boxing de Puerto Rico.

Méndez ganó el título en agosto del año pasado, cuando derrotó por decisión unánime al filipino Víctor Saludar.

En octubre, defendió la corona ante Axel Aragón Vega, de México, y ahora se enrumba a esta segunda exposición de la corona ante Villegas, un ecuatoriano que está invicto en 12 combates, con 4 triunfos por la vía rápida. Méndez, en cambio, tiene un palmarés de 15-1, con 5 nocauts.

En esta misma cartilla, por el título latino OMB de las 115 libras, el panameño Orlando “El Jaguar” Peñalba enfrentará al venezolano Keyver Fernández, mientras que el boricua Luis “Popeye” Lebrón tendrá como rival al colombiano José Antonio Jiménez.

Además, el prospecto costarricense David “Medallita” Jiménez enfrentará a Jonathán “El Aguas” Arias, Yhorvis Pacheco tendrá como rival a Francisco De la Rosa y en los pesos pesados, Víctor “Porototipo” Delgado enfrentará a Abdiel Matute.

With five fights and the world ranked Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz and Luis “Popeye” Lebrón in the main bouts, this Saturday, November 24, returns the series “Sabado de Campeones en Casino Metro Boxing Nights”, to take place in the San Juan Ballroom at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in San Juan, in a presentation of PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP), in association with Spartan Boxing and Top Rank, to be broadcast live on Wapa Deportes.

“This is going to be our second event of the year (at the Sheraton), this promises to be much better than the previous one, it’s a very important date and we are very excited about this great event, in which we have world-class fighters,” said promoter Iván Rivera, president of PRBBP.

Casino Metro General Manager Ismael Vega said that “for Casino Metro it is an honor to be associated with the Rivera brothers, there will be many more events, and I am very excited about what comes with Casino Metro Boxing Nights.”

In the main event of the evening, Barranquitas native Pitufo Diaz (23-1, 15 kos), who comes from a defeat in July on dispute of the WBO world title in 130 pounds against the Japanese Masayuki Ito, will fight with the Hungarian David Berna (17-5, 16 kos) to 10 rounds and 127 pounds. Diaz, 23, is ranked sixth by the WBO at 126 pounds right now.

“I come from a loss in a 130-pound title fight, it was a great experience, you learn a lot more about the loss, we’re two or three bouts before the world title fight, early or mid-next year I’m going to be world champion,” said Diaz, who has not fought in Puerto Rico since February 2017.

His opponent, Berna, indicated, through his interpreter and trainer Zoltan Petranyi, that “I am grateful for the opportunity, I come to fight, that is my plan”.

In the co-main event, the WBO Latino monarch in 126 pounds, Popeye Lebrón (13-0-1, 7 kos), will defend for the second time his belt against the Mexican Luis May (21-10-1, 8 kos) 10 rounds. In his last bout, Lebrón, who will fight for the fifth time in 2018, won by technical knockout over Darryl Hayes on September 1st.

“I am happy and grateful, we have worked with conscience, it is going to be a fight that will be a war, come to see a great fight,” said Lebrón, ranked 12 by the WBO at 126 pounds.

While, May said that “I come to represent my country proudly, we know about the rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico and this war it will not be the exception, there will be war, I am going to give everything”.

The undercard have Puerto Rican descent, Joseph Adorno (10-0, 9 kos), making his debut in the Island, when he faces Mexican Luis Gerardo Avila (6-14-3, 3 kos) in 130 pounds and six rounds; in the same weight and also to six rounds, the unbeaten Henry “Moncho” Lebrón (6-0, 4 kos) will face the Hungarian Mark Szoros (5-4, 3 kos). Meanwhile, in a four rounds bout, undefeated boxers Patrik Cora (3-0, 3 kos) and Alfredo Mejías (3-0, 1 kos) will face each other at 154 pounds.

During the press conference the WBO gave to Jose “Sniper” Pedraza the belt that accredited him as the Lightweight World Champion (135 pounds) after defeating the Mexican Raymundo Beltrán last Saturday in Arizona.

In the main event, the two-time Puerto Rican Olympian (2012 and 2016), Cintron (7-0, 4 kos), who comes from defeating Venezuela’s Gregory Vera last month to win the WBO Youth bantamweight crown, will drop to 115 pounds to dispute the vacant WBO Latino title in that weight against the Mexican Francisco Alonso Melendez (15-2, 13 kos) to 10 rounds. Cintron, who belongs Top Rank, will fight for the second time on the Island, while this clash will be his sixth in 2018.

“I want you to know that God gave me a talent and I came to boxing to achieve great things, and among those great things is to mark my name in the history of boxing in Puerto Rico, I say it today and it will be like that. They will soon have a name in the book of Puerto Rican champions called Jeyvier Cintron,” said Cintron, who is trained by former world champion in two divisions Ivan ” Iron Boy” Calderón.

While Melendez said that “I feel happy to represent Mexico, it’s going to be a classic Mexico-Puerto Rico, I’m excited, ready.”

In the co-main event, Popeye Lebron (12-0-1, 6 kos), who will fight for the first time since April 2017 in Puerto Rico, will defend for the second time his WBO Latino featherweight title (126 pounds) against Chilean Robinson Laviñanza (13-4-2, 5 kos). Lebrón is currently ranked #12 by the WBO in the featherweights.

“I was told that Robinson Laviñanza had a delay in the flight, I want to tell him to come in good condition, because I am ready and we will have a good fight this Saturday,” said Lebron.

In other matches of the show, Henry “Moncho” Lebrón (5-0, 4 kos) will face the Mexican Luis Gerardo Ávila (6-11-3, 4 kos) in a six round fight at 130 pounds, while Luis Meléndez (2-0, 2 kos), from Miami, Florida, will face Elliot de Jesus (1-2) at 126 pounds in a four round scheduled bout.

In only his eighth fight as a professional, Cintrón (7-0, 4 KOs), twice (2012 and 2016) a Puerto Rican Olympian and signed by Top Rank, will face Mexican Alonzo Melendez (15-2, 13 KOs) for the vacant WBO Latino Junior Bantanweight title in a 10 rounds scheduled bout.

It will be the second fight in Puerto Rico for Cintrón, who has defeated Venezuela’s Gregory Vera last month to win the WBO Youth belt at 118 pounds. The match against Meléndez will also be the sixth of 2018 for Cintrón.

Meanwhile, Popeye Lebrón (12-0-1, 6 KOs) will defend his WBO Latino title at 126 pounds against Chilean Robinson Laviñanza (13-4-2, 5 KOs).

For Lebrón, it will be the second defense of the title he won in April against Luis Ruiz and defended in July against Milner Marcano in Colombia. Lebrón is ranked #12 by the WBO in the featherweight division.

The two-time Olympian Jeyvier Cintron (6-0, 4 KOs) will fight for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Youth Bantamweight championship when he takes on Venezuelan Gregory Vera (12-1, 6 KOs). The Puerto Rican boxer traveled with his team led by his trainer and former double world champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderón. This will be the fifth fight in 2018 for Cintron.

While, Luis ‘Popeyre’ Lebrón (11-0-1, 5 KOs), #12 ranked by the WBO in 126 pounds and trained by Raymond Bernard, will defend his WBO Latino Featherweight title against the Venezuelan Milner Marcano (14-4, 10 KOs) in a bout scheduled to 10 rounds. Lebrón won the belt in April when he beat Luis Ruiz in Colombia.

Undefeated Colombian José Soto (7-0, 3 KOs) battles fellow countryman José Jimenez (20-8-1, 9 KOs) for the vacant WBO Latino Flyweight belt in a 10-round clash.
