Jonathan Oquendo Tired of Waiting, Wants His Big Shot

The number two contender in the rankings of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) at 122 pounds, Jonathan Oquendo, is tired of waiting for a shot at the title. He says the WBO continues to push him back, while other fighters are getting the opportunity to fight for the title – like last weekend when Nonito Donaire defeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title.

According to Jose Sanchez, promoter Felix ‘Tutino’ Zabala is lobbying Vazquez Jr. to get another shot at the WBO-interim title because Donaire suffered a hand injury in the contest – but the injury is likely not going to prevent a summer showdown between Donaire and Mexico’s Jorge Arce.

“I do not care about a fight with Vazquez [for an interim-title]. I want to fight with Nonito. If I have to wait [for Donaire], I’ll wait. But I’m not going to risk my position unnecessarily in other fights. They made me wait for [Fernando] Montiel, who got knocked out. Then they placed Vazquez ahead of me. We tried to fight Vazquez and I do not know what happened. Then [Jorge] Arce knocked him out. We wanted to fight with Arce, but he decided to move down in weight. And then I wanted to fight Nonito [for the title] and they gave Vazquez the chance, who lost again. Will [the WBO] give [Vazquez] yet another chance, after he already lost twice? I am offended,” Oquendo said.
