Puerto Rican boxing celebrates a new golden chapter after René “Chulo” Santiago was crowned the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior flyweight world champion by defeating Japanese Shokichi Iwata by unanimous decision at the legendary Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

In a display of intelligence and precision, Santiago dominated the fight throughout the 12 rounds, displaying impeccable ring management and constantly escaping the pressure of the then champion, who failed to decipher the Puerto Rican’s elusive and effective style. The judges’ scorecards clearly demonstrated the new champion’s superiority with scores of 116-112, 117-111, and 118-110.

Despite the clear victory, the evening wasn’t without a moment of confusion when the referee, in a glaring error, raised Iwata’s arm at the end of the fight. The situation was quickly corrected, and Santiago’s celebrations were immediate, surrounded by his team and the Puerto Rican flag waving high above him.
