CES Boxing and Top Rank are kicking off the new year with a sizzling junior welterweight clash, rolling out the red carpet for a showdown between WBO Champion Teofimo Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs) and the hard-hitting Jamaine Ortiz (17-1-1, 8 KOs).

“Teofimo Lopez is not just any fighter; he’s a boxing wizard who craves challenges,” declared Top Rank’s head honcho, Bob Arum.

“And in walks Jamaine Ortiz, a boxer who’s not just good, but ridiculously good.”

Billed as “The Showman Returns,” this electrifying brawl is set to erupt on Thursday, February 8, broadcast live on ESPN during Super Bowl week at the glitzy Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

CES Boxing’s bigwig Jimmy Burchfield, Sr. can barely contain his excitement.

“Jamaine’s got this in the bag. He’s up against Teofimo Lopez, sure, but he’s been itching for this fight. Watch him swipe that champion title right under Teofimo’s nose,” he quipped. Ortiz, brimming with anticipation, remarked, “I’ve been dreaming of this world title fight, and I’m all set to haul that title back to Massachusetts.” For Lopez, it’s his first rodeo defending the titles he snatched at Madison Square Garden’s Theater last June.

“Come February 8 at Mandalay Bay, I’ll be the king of the ring, dazzling everyone with my moves,” Lopez boasted. “I know Jamaine’s tough – we’ve danced before. But this time, I’m not just looking to win; I’m looking to send a thunderbolt through my division.”

The two are no strangers to each other, having locked horns as amateurs back in 2015 for the National Golden Gloves title, with Lopez emerging victorious. Since then, they’ve both tangled with the legendary Vasyl Lomachenko, with varying results. Their paths now converge in the junior welterweight division. Lopez is riding high with three wins, including a stunning triumph over Josh Taylor for the WBO and Ring titles. Ortiz, stepping up to 140 lbs, claimed victory over Antonio Moran, setting the stage for this epic confrontation.

“This is boxing at its finest,” Burchfield Sr. exclaimed. “Two prime gladiators, battling for glory and hometown pride.” Ortiz, hailing from Worcester, MA and proudly representing his Puerto Rican and Dominican roots, has an impressive track record, including victories over Jamel Herring and Nahir Albright. Lopez, the Brooklyn native with Honduran blood, aims to silence any doubts following his loss to George Kambosos, Jr., having already conquered three world champs.

Unified WBO champ Oleksandr Usyk and Lineal champion Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury will collide in a historic undisputed heavyweight showdown on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The winner will become boxing’s first undisputed heavyweight champion since Britain’s Lennox Lewis claimed that honor 24 years ago, but this time, four belts are on the line.

Ahead of the blockbuster ‘Ring of Fire’ fight, Fury and Usyk came face-to-face at a press conference Thursday in London.

This is what the heavyweight champions had to say.

Tyson Fury

“I’ve been in many heavyweight title fights before. And now is the most important one. We’re both undefeated. He’s a champion; I’m a champion. And it’s going to be one of the fights for the ages.”

“It’s been 24 years since we’ve last had an undisputed heavyweight world champion. And we know that the Klitschkos were champions for about 10 years. So there’s been another 14 years where other heavyweights couldn’t stop it. So we’ve been chosen. And I believe we’re both destined to be here. And there’s only one winner: I’m destined to become undisputed champion.”

“We’re not here to talk. It’s not a talking contest. It’s a boxing match. On February 17, all the talking goes out the window. It doesn’t matter what he or what I said. It comes down to who wins the fight. He thinks he’s going to win. I know I’m going to win. There’s not much more to be said.”

Oleksandr Usyk

“I’m very happy to be here. Thank you to everyone. I will speak more in the ring.”

“I want to tell a story that looks very similar to our story with Tyson, about David and Goliath. When the Lord gives me Tyson in my hands, I will do my job.”

FRIDAY: Jonathan Gonzalez-Gerardo Zapata WBO  Junior Flyweight World Title Showdown to Stream LIVE & Exclusively on ESPN+Fight action from Nicaragua begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT

(Oct. 23, 2023) —Puerto Rico’s WBO light flyweight world champion, Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez, will defend his world title against hometown favorite Gerardo Zapata this Friday, Oct. 27 at Alexis Arguello Sports Complex in Managua, Nicaragua. Gonzalez-Zapata and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Gonzalez (27-3-1, 14 KOs) has won five bouts since falling short to Kosei Tanaka in a 2019 bid for the WBO flyweight world title. He then moved down to the light flyweight ranks and positioned himself for a title shot with a pair of victories. In October 2019, he toppled Mexican champion Elwin Soto by split decision to capture his world title. Gonzalez defended the WBO light flyweight twice in 2022 with unanimous decision victories over Mark Anthony Barriaga in Florida and Shokichi Iwata in Japan. Zapata (14-1-1, 5 KOs), who was born in Managua, fought the first 14 bouts of his pro career in his home country. He lost his ‘0’ when he was controversially disqualified against Rene Santiago in December 2022. Zapata returned in August and was held to a 10-round draw against Panamanian contender Azael Villar. In other ESPN+ streaming bouts:

  • Rene Santiago (11-3, 8 KOs), two fights removed from the DQ win over Zapata, will defend his WBO Latino light flyweight title in a 10-rounder against undefeated Nicaraguan Kevin Vivas (7-0, 2 KOs).
  • Welterweight prospect Harvin “Manimal” Aguirre (8-0, 6 KOs) steps up against Israel Lopez (11-3-1, 8 KOs) in an eight-rounder.
  • Honduras-born Jr flyweight Gerardo Sanchez (8-1, 5 KOs) hopes to end the unbeaten run of Peru’s Eduardo Ajito (11-0, 5 KOs) for WBO Latino Championship
  • In a six-round female light flyweight contest, Eveling Ortega (5-4, 2 KOs) looks to increase her winning streak to five against Costa Rica’s Silvia Duran (3-1, 2 KOs).

In an explosive main event, San Diego’s Giovani “Gallo de Oro” Santillan (32-0, 17 KOs) maintained his undefeated record and took home the NABO Welterweight Title from Santa Ana’s Alexis “Lex” Rocha (23-2, 15 KOs). Scheduled for 12-rounds, Santillan handed Rocha his first career loss via knockout, slowly breaking him down and sending Rocha to the mat twice in the fifth round. It was in the sixth round where Santillan used a flurry of right hooks and left uppercuts that finished the fight at 1:13. The fight night was presented in association with Top Rank, took place at the Kia Forum, and was broadcast on DAZN.

“I feel good. It was the outcome we were looking for. You never know how these types of fights will go,” said Giovani Santillan. “Alexis is a great fighter, and he’s tough. He got up twice and he’s never been stopped before! It’s different with all these people here and when you’re the b-side. He brought all his fans and his supporters which makes boxing a great sport. 2024 is going to be a great year for me now with this performance.”

“I am sorry to all my fans,” said Alexis Rocha. “I will be back.”
