DETROIT – Sunday, June 4, 2023 – A crowd of 11,784 fans showed up at the first-ever boxing event at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, and many more tuned in on DAZN, to watch undisputed WBO Middleweight World Champion Claressa “G.W.O.A.T.” Shields continue her domination of women’s boxing with a clear-cut 10-round unanimous decision over No. 1 rated contender Maricela Cornejo of Los Angeles.

With the screams of her devoted fans ringing throughout the arena, Shields (14-0, 2 KOs) showed her brilliance in besting the formidable Cornejo (16-6, 6 KOs) in every possible category, while still making the fight an entertaining affair.

True to her word, Shields tried for the elusive knockout, swinging several attempted homerun shots, many of which landed. But Cornejo’s toughness allowed her to make it through the portions of the fight where Shields’ speed and ability surpassed her defense.

The scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-89. With the victory, Shields retains her WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and WBF Women’s World Middleweight Championships.

“I feel great,” said Shields post-victory. “I was landing my shots. I won every round like I knew I could. I went for the knockout how many times this fight? Maricela is tough. She did a great job. Height doesn’t matter and power doesn’t matter either. It’s all about the skills and will and heart, and I always have more than the other girls.”

Shields said her game plan worked to perfection, but still added room for improvement.

“Stay smart and not get hit with her big right hand,” she said of her strategy. “Hit bigger to the body and check her to the head. I knew I could win. Straight right for the money. When I would hit her harder, she would take off. I led off with the right too many times, so I will work on that when we get back to the gym. Maricela is super tough. She was in shape and able to take the shots and able to get away from them. It was a great fight. I can’t wait to go home and watch it and see what I can work on.”

Dmitriy Salita, President of Salita Promotions, said, “Claressa showed why she’s the GWOAT tonight. Her fans showed up to support her and she put on an amazing show against a very tough opponent in Cornejo. And Little Caesars Arena was the perfect place for us to put on this event, which included a stacked undercard of talented local fighters that got to enjoy their night in front of their hometown fans as well. This was a great night for women’s boxing and Detroit boxing.”

A dejected Cornejo, who was hoping to pull off the upset, said she’s looking forward to continuing her improvements and fighting another day.

“I’m good. I felt fine,” Cornejo said. “Obviously there is so much more I could work on. I want to see the fight again and see the mistakes that I’ve done just to improve on. I think I held my ground and I know I caught her with some good shots and I just need to work on much more to be able to continue those rights I know I landed on her.

“I’m not happy with the loss, I’m just disappointed,” she continued. “I need to just watch it. It’s intense the way she comes forward. I would have done better being more assertive going forward and not going straight back. That’s something I’ve worked on a lot.”

Solidifying his worthy place at No.1 on the WBO rankings, Alexis “Lex” Rocha (23-1,15 KOs) of Santa Ana successfully defended his NABO Welterweight title against Anthony “Juice” Young (24-3, 8 KOs) with a fifth-round knockout victory as the main event live on DAZN from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and presented in association with Hard Hitting Promotions. The seventh time Rocha has fought in 23-months, his pressure on Young starting from the first round eventually broke the veteran fighter down. The referee stopped the fight at 2:25 in the fifth round.

“I knew he was going to come in with the same energy he did when he fought Sadam Ali, and I was ready for that,” said Alexis Rocha. “I want the winner of the Spence-Crawford fight, and I am confident with the help of my amazing promoter, Golden Boy and Oscar De La Hoya, we’ll make it happen.”

Special guests of the night included Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Partner Bernard Hopkins, Actor Gabriel Soto, Actor Alfie Allen, and a number of fighters including Rolando “Rolly” Romero, Jousce Gonzalez, Manuel “Gucci Manny Flores, Grant Flores, Jorge Chavez, Joet Gonzalez, Ricardo Sandoval, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez, and Lorraine Villalobos.

Making history for Villalba, Puerto Rico, Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (7-0, 4 KOs) etched his name amongst the greats of Puerto Rican fighters and his division by being the fastest to become a world champion in the minimumweight division. He became the new WBO Minimumweight Champion when his opponent, former champion of Santos City, Philippines, Melvin “Gringo” Jerusalem (20-2, 12 KOs) retired in his corner at the conclusion of the seventh round.

“We knew we had a solid challenge ahead of us, but thanks to my corner, they helped me stay calm throughout the fight,” said Oscar Collazo. “I knew I had to establish the pace with my jab, and by the fourth or fifth round we started to hit the body and he didn’t like it. We chopped the tree and we made history for Villalba. I will see you all in Puerto Rico in August, where I will make my first title defense.”

Opening the DAZN broadcast, Los Angeles’ John “Scrappy” Ramirez (12-0, 8 KOs) fought in one of his toughest fights yet against Riverside, CA’s warrior Fernando “Leoncito” Diaz (12-4-1, 4 KOs) in a 10-round super flyweight fight. Ramirez secured a split division victory with judges scoring the fight 96-94, 94-96, and 96-94.

Repeat or revenge? That is the question which will be asked and answered on Saturday, June 17 when bitter rivals Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr return to Manchester’s AO Arena in a high-stakes rematch presented by BOXXER, in association with Wasserman Boxing – and live on Sky Sports Box Office.

For former WBO world light-middleweight champion Smith (33-3-1, 20 KO’s), a second win will stamp his authority on the domestic division and set the stage for huge future world title opportunities as he continues his career renaissance under the BOXXER banner.

For Eubank (32-3, 23 KO’s), victory means redemption and revitalises the prospect of encounters with elite names on the world stage.

Meanwhile, Savannah ‘The Silent Assassin’ Marshall (12-1, 10 KO’s) will challenge undisputed world super-middleweight champion Franchón ‘FCD’ Crews-Dezurn in the co-headline bout.

Having headlined a record-setting event at London’s O2 Arena in an October challenge against Claressa ‘GWOAT’ Shields, Marshall’s return to the ring places her immediately in another high-stakes encounter against an undisputed world champion with the WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF world super-middleweight championships on the line.

Crews-Dezurn (8-1, 2 KO’s) began her second stint as WBO world super-middleweight champion in March 2020, captured the WBC title for a second time in June 2020 and then added the WBA and IBF belts in April 2022 to become undisputed world champion of the weight class.

Jake Paul’s non-profit foundation ‘Boxing Bullies’ partners with the WBO to help renovate gyms in US and Puerto Rico launching first amateur boxing event in the island.

The inaugural partnership with Boxing Bullies organization was a complete success in our first boxing amateur event held at the renowned Félix Pagán Pintor Boxing Gym located in the city of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The gym is supervised by WBO Two-Division (105, 108 lbs) World Champion Iván Calderon!

14 exciting fights, special diamond belt for Undisputed WBO Featherweight Champion Amanda Serrano, boxing equipment to the competidors and more were the order of the day in the crowded event.

Chinese southpaw Zhilei Zhang (25-1-1, 20 KOs) earned the most important victory of his career with a stunning sixth-round TKO over undefeated hometown hero Joe Joyce (15-1, 14 KOs).

Zhang stunned Joyce with sharp left hands in the first two rounds. In the following round, Joyce tried to step up his offense, but his inability to see Zhang’s left hand stunted his momentum.

By rounds four and five, Zhang began comfortably landing his shots from close range, using his high guard defense to avoid return fire as Joyce’s right eye began to swell.

After two inspections from the ringside doctor, referee Howard Foster was forced to end the fight at 1:23 of round six.

Zhang said, “Today belongs to me. It belongs to everyone who showed up. It belongs to every Chinese person who showed up today.

“I’m 39 years old. But I’m disciplined. I train hard. The next step is for me to fight for a world title.”

Joyce said, “I’m just disappointed with my performance. The [left] hand kept hitting me, and I couldn’t get out of the way. So, respect to Zhilei Zhang. It was a good fight, but I think I could have done better.

“I haven’t fought a southpaw for so long. Credit to him because he’s a good fighter. I gave it my all, and I think I can do better. It’s just disappointing. I expected to win like I normally do.”

Unrelenting pressure allowed Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez to commit to the body, cut off the ring and land a steadfast barrage of flush shots.

The 23-year-old rode that strategy en route to a gritty unanimous decision victory over Cristian Gonzalez to become the new WBO flyweight world champion Saturday night. Judges inside the Boeing Center at Tech Port, San Antonio, Texas scored it 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 all in favor of Rodriguez, who had to overcome a broken jaw, which he said he suffered during the sixth round of the fight.

After claiming his second world title in a second weight class, “Bam” didn’t waste time setting his sights on IBF world flyweight titleholder Sunny Edwards for a possible unification bout.

“That’s the only option,” Rodriguez told DAZN’s Chris Mannix. “I seen he’s been talking, so let’s make it happen.”

Cuba crowned a new world champion tonight.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez (12-1, 7 KOs) captured the vacant WBO featherweight world title with a unanimous decision victory over former junior featherweight world champion Isaac “Royal Storm” Dogboe (24-3, 15 KOs) Saturday evening at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa.

After an opening feel out round, the 29-year-old wobbled Dogboe with a counter left hand that began a relentless attack. The two then exchanged bombs in the following round, while Dogboe began landing body shots in the fourth.

By the sixth round, however, Ramirez established control and landed consecutive left hands on Dogboe. From then on, Ramirez’s footwork and feints began to keep Dogboe at bay, while additional left hands kept finding a home.

Ramirez scored a knockdown in the final round, though Dogboe disputed the call as a slip. Nevertheless, Ramirez, who is trained by Ismael Salas, won going away champion by scores of 117-110, 118-109 and 119-108.

Ramirez said, “I’m living a new stage in my life. This is a new history that I’m writing, and I did everything I had to do. As an Olympian, I won two Olympic gold medals, and now I can call myself a champion.”

“All the respect to a warrior like Isaac Dogboe. He has my admiration, and all it took was me listening to this genius, Ismael Salas, because I did that, and he led me to victory.

“I believe things happened for a reason. If it wasn’t for that loss in my pro debut, I would have never ended up with Ismael Salas. Yordenis Ugas never would’ve told me, ‘You have to move to Vegas, you have to change your life,’ and I never would have gotten this team together to be where I am today.”

Dogboe said, “Let’s run it back. That’s all I have to say. He’s a great fighter.”

WBO Jr. Heavyweight Champion Lawrence Okolie returned to Sky Sports to retain his World Championship in a confident unanimous decision victory over the previously-undefeated New Zealand champion and WBO #1 contender David Light at the AO Arena, Manchester.

Despite having been out of the ring for over a year, Okolie dominated the fight with scorecards of: 119-108, 117-110, and 116-112, showing class and skill under his new trainer SugarHill Steward, a relationship looking likely to bear even richer fruit in future. The North London native controlled the range of the fight very successfully with a pawing jab that stopped Light from getting into position to land any damaging shots.

When Light did get close, Okolie used effective short hooks from within the clinch. While the jab did most of the work for Okolie in the early rounds, the right hand did find its mark at an increasing frequency as the fight went on. The resulting damage accumulated to the point Light was running on fumes by the end of the fight and the scorecards remained lopsided despite a point deduction for Okolie in the 11th round.

With Okolie a proven one-shot fight-finisher, Light showed he has a genuinely world-class chin by not being knocked down in the 10th and 11th rounds, but he could do little else than try to remain standing as the fight went on.

Lawrence Okolie said to Sky Sports after the fight: “David Light was extremely tough, but there’s no excuses and we use it to get better. I hurt him in the second half of the fight, and he was dancing round the ring away from me, but he had strong defenses and was able to survive. I’ll fight anyone, if you think you’re good enough to beat me, meet me in the ring and let’s fight.”

YOKOHAMA, Japan (March 6, 2023) — Naoya “Monster” Inoue conquered the bantamweight division. He’s now moving up in weight to capture the biggest fish at 122 pounds.

Philadelphia’s WBC & WBO junior featherweight world champion, Stephen Fulton, will defend his titles against Japan’s pound-for-pound king Sunday, May 7, at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan. The showdown pits two of the world’s top fighters, as Inoue aims to become only the fifth Asian boxer to win world titles in four weight classes.

Fulton-Inoue and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ in a special early-morning presentation.

Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs) is 19-0 with 17 knockouts in world title fights, a championship run that started in 2014 when he knocked out Adrian Hernandez for the WBC light flyweight world title. He went on to rule the junior bantamweight division with seven title defenses, including a second-round stoppage over Omar Narvaez. At bantamweight, Inoue became the division’s first undisputed champion in a half-century, stopping Emmanuel Rodriguez in two rounds to win the IBF strap, outlasting Nonito Donaire in the 2019 Fight of the Year to add the WBA belt, starching Donaire in the second round of their June 2022 rematch to snatch the WBC title, and stopping then-WBO champion Paul Butler in the 11th round. Inoue vacated all four bantamweight titles to move up four pounds for a shot at “Cool Boy Steph.”

Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) turned pro in 2014 and defeated five undefeated prospects in his first 12 bouts. In January 2021, he defeated Angelo Leo to capture the WBO junior featherweight world title. Ten months later, he added the WBC belt to his collection with a majority decision over then-unbeaten Brandon Figueroa in one of the year’s most action-packed championship showdowns. Fulton defended both titles last June with a one-sided unanimous decision over former unified world champion Daniel Roman. Fulton will enter the Inoue bout, his first away from American soil, coming off an 11-month layoff. The 28-year-old Fulton, however, is the naturally bigger man, holding advantages in height and reach.
