Echo Arena, Liverpool – Tommy Langford (159¼lbs) and Lewis Taylor (159lbs) engaged in a bitty war of attrition for the vacant middleweight Commonwealth title most recently held by Billy Joe Saunders and Langford’s WBO Inter-Continental belt.
Neither man gained dominion over the other early on, so it became a tit for tat affair with Langford looking to land combinations and Taylor enjoying some single shot success as the stanzas sped by.
Langford’s career really picked up momentum in 2015; the Birmingham-based boxer beat Julio Cesar Avalos (W TKO 4), Cristian Fabian Rios (W 10) and Robert Swierzbinski (W TKO 5), winning and twice retaining the WBO Inter-Continental belt during that hat-trick of wins.
Tayor, though, was on a two-win streak since losing to Eamonn O’Kane in May of last year—a majority decision reverse over 12 for the IBF Inter-Continental title—so he came in buoyed by victories over Grant Cunningham and Jez Wilson (W TD 5 and TKO 5 respectively).
Despite picking up a cut over the left eye in the ninth, Langford marched forward through the slowly trickling blood to blast home a series of body shots.
Cutsman Kerry Kayes stemmed the flow between rounds, but Taylor was unable to consistently repeal the bludgeoning attacks of his determined co-challenger. Still, he threaded home enough single shots to keep Langford honest as the fight entered the crucial championship rounds.
The bell went for the 11th round heralded Langford into new entirely territory—the win over Rios was the sole occasion that he has entered the 10th round of a fight. Taylor has done 12 once; he pushed on early in the penultimate round only for Langford to gain a foothold going in the final minute.
Marcus McDonnell applauded both boxers as they went into the last round. Neither man had enough pep to produce a late rally or knockdown, they held more often than in the earlier rounds as the seconds slipped away.
Scores of 118-110 (Terry O’Connor), 118-111 (Steve Gray) and 118-111 (Dave Parris) added the Commonwealth belt to Langford’s trophy cabinet. Langford progresses to 16-0 (5); Taylor drops to 18-2-1 (3).
“I won it convincingly,” Langford said. “I could have boxed better behind my jab, used my feet better or got out of the way, instead I was pulling out and getting caught. Credit to Taylor, better than I expected and he can come again.”
“It was a good fight, he should learn a lot from it,” added Warren. “He’ll watch it, see his mistakes and there’s a couple of things to work on. Big Heart, great for the fans and he’ll learn from that and hopefully by the end of the year be fighting for a world title.”
The Inter-Continental belt has lifted Langford up the WBO’s ratings, he sits at four and Warren also promotes Billy Joe Saunders so it could be a viable option for all involved if Langford adds another few wins to his W column.
Earlier in the night, Warren revealed that he believes a showdown with consensus number one, but not the linear holder, Gennady Golovkin is a stadium fight so should be placed on the back burner until 2017. However, he also revealed that Saunders himself is chomping at the bit for the chance to meet “GGG”.
In the meantime, though, Saunders faces WBO #11 Max Bursak at London’s Copper Box Arena on April 30 in the maiden defence of the belt he won by out-pointing Andy Lee in December.

On Saturday night, the reigning, defending WBO lightweight champion of the world, 26 year-old, 5’9½” tall, southpaw Terry “Turbo” Flanagan (28-0, 11 KOs) of Manchester, England was making his first title defense and it just happened to be in front of the home folk at the Manchester Arena in a scheduled 12 rounder against a gentleman the promoters were touting as “the #1 ranked contender” 28 year-old, 5’6” tall Diego Magdaleno (28-1, 12 KOs) from Las Vegas, Nevada. Even though several ranking systems had Magdaleno ranked as high as #27 in the world, the WBO had him ranked right up in their Top 10 plus several of the local British bookies had the betting line for this fight a toss-up.
After just 5 minutes and 38 seconds, the fight was over. The end came in round two when Flanagan dropped Magdaleno three times. After several extremely hard left uppercuts, a plethora of extremely hard left hooks, the repeated head snapping jabs, referee Terry O’Connor finally stopped the fight at the 2:38 mark of round two. Even though Magdaleno finished on his feet, there was no way he could have possibly continued after the three straight knockdowns. With his extremely wide stance for a short man, he looked like an first time ice skater falling all over the ice. With the legs separated he did two ballerina splits. To his credit, the fully exposed Magdaleno showed a lot of heart and kept throwing his own hard shots albeit missing by a wide stretch.
With the win, Flanagan moves up to (29-0, 12 KOs), while Magdaleno drops to (28-2, 12 KOs).

Nathan Cleverly’s unbeaten record went up in smoke as impressive Russian Sergey Kovalev took his WBO light-heavyweight title off him with a destructive fourth-round stoppage in Cardiff.
The 26-year-old Welshman had been seeking unification fights in the US and was under pressure to impress an American audience, with Saturday’s fight at the Motorpoint Arena being televised across the Atlantic.
Kovalev tore up the script by flooring Cleverly twice in the third round and soon forcing a stoppage. Odds makers had struggled to split the pair before what promised to be the hardest of Cleverly’s six world title defences.
The Florida-based Kovalev, 30, went into the fight with a 21-0-1 record and already has a following in the US with many fancying him to snatch Cleverly’s world title in the Cefn Fforest man’s backyard.
Mathematics graduate Cleverly started with the knowledge that Kovalev had a taste for quick knockouts. Indeed, the eastern European challenger was looking to land big right hands from the first minute and won the opening round quite clearly.
Cleverly was busy but made few inroads, despite somehow opening a cut over the challenger’s right eye. Kovalev, meanwhile, was successfully deploying the jab followed by a driven right hand on a regular basis.
Cleverly landed a decent shot of his own towards the end of the second which was his only real moment of success up to that point. He was rocked badly by a left and went down moments later from a clubbing right. He rose to his feet but was unsteady and moments later he was down from another right to the head, made worse by Kovalev hitting him again as he sank to one knee.
He was out on his feet again and the referee Terry O’Connor was poised to stop it, only for the bell to save the Briton.
Kovalev went for it in the fourth and unleashed as many power shots as he could muster. A right and hooking left sent Cleverly wobbly again 29 seconds into the round and O’Connor this time decided enough was enough.
Cleverly’s record reads 26-1, with 12 knockouts while the fearsome Kovalev moves to 22-0-1, with 20 knockouts.
The new champion said: “I came here and nobody believed I beat their champion but everywhere else in the world they knew already how good I was.
“I knew he couldn’t take my power. The fact the fight was televised on HBO in the United States was very important for me.”
On the undercard, Liverpool’s Stephen Smith stopped Gary Buckland with a seething short right uppercut in the fifth to leave the Welsh champion out cold and win the British super-featherweight title.
The Swansea favourite Enzo Maccarinelli won the Commonwealth light-heavyweight belt from Ovill McKenzie with an uppercut of his own in the 11th round to inject new life into his career. PA

In a much anticipated clash between unbeaten light heavyweights, power-punching KO artist Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KOs) demolished and dethroned WBO champion Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KOs) on Saturday night at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. Kovalev was the aggressor, but was cut over the right eye in round two. Kovalev dropped Cleverly twice with hard shots in round three and referee Terry O’Connor carried Cleverly to his corner at the bell. Kovalev dropped Cleverly again in round four and the bout was waved off at :21.
Kovalev said “This is my dream! I will add this belt to my collection,” he joked, with a big smile on his face, “There are many people in Russia and around the world who supported me. This is for them.”
Jubilant Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO, Kovalev’s promoter said, “Sergey did everything we expected him to do tonight and more.” She added, ” There is a reason we call him ‘Krusher,’ and he showed why tonight. He is the Russian Wrecking Ball and I will call on HBO Monday to start planning his next fight!”
In a rematch, former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (37-6, 29 KOs) scored an eleventh round TKO over Commonwealth light heavyweight titleholder Ovill McKenzie (21-12, 10 KOs). A gut-check war of attrition ended when Maccarinelli cracked McKenzie with a left uppercut that put McKenzie out on his feet propped up only by the corner. Time was 2:44. Their first fight last year was a controversial TKO2 win for McKenzie when referee Ian John-Lewis suddenly stopped the fight even though Maccarinelli wasn’t hurt. No question about this stoppage (made by Chisora-Scott referee Phil Edwards).
Super featherweight Stephen Smith (17-1, 10 KOs) sensationally knocked out reigning British beltholder Gary Buckland (27-3, 9 KOs) with a clean right uppercut in round five. Buckland went down face first and stayed down. Time was 1:41. The Joe Gallagher-trained Smith is now British 130lb champion.
Unbeaten welterweight Lewis Rees (8-0, 5 KOs) outpointed Dee Mitchell (9-41-2, 2 KOs), sweeping all eight rounds by a 80-72 score. Mitchell is 0-36-1 sine his last win in 2009.
Unbeaten lightweight Craig Evans (10-0, 3 KOs) won a tediously boring eight rounder against Youssef Al Hamidi (12-57-3, 1 KO). Scored 80-73. Al Hamidi is now 1-16-1 in his last 18.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- World Boxing Organization (WBO), by president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, announced today the referees and judges who will work this Saturday, July 13, in the world title fights to be held in Germany and Philippines.
At the Energie Verbund-Arena en Dresden, Sachsen, Germany, the WBO supermiddleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (44-3, 25 KOs) will make his first defense when he faces Japanese Yuzo Kiyota (23-3-1, 21 KOs), the #10 ranked, in a Sport Events Steinforth presentation. For this fight the referee will be Celestino Ruiz from United States.
Meanwhile the judges for the Stieglitz-Kiyota bout are Alejandro López Cid from México, Terry O’Connor from United Kingdom and Ingo Barrabas from Germany. The WBO supervisor for this fight will be the President Paco Valcarcel himself.
Otherwise, at the Solaire Resort Hotel and Casino in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines, the WBO minimumweight champion Merlito Sabillo (22-0, 11 KOs) will defend his belt for the first time against the #15 ranked Jorle Estrada (17-6, 6 KOs) from Colombia. The referee for this bout will be Raul Caiz Jr. from United States.
