Former two-time champion Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33KOs) is already training for his next fight, scheduled on April 14th in Copenhagen against WBO super middleweight king Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23KOs). Kessler is not taking Stieglitz for granted and expects a tough fight.

“He’s strong and I know that. I know that we will win against Stieglitz but it will be a tough fight. I’ve fought the best in the world, but Stieglitz is a physically strong fighter and he has strength for all of the twelve rounds and you have to be in very good condition to beat him. That’s very important,” Kessler said.

One of the goals of Kessler is to obtain a rematch with WBA/WBC champion Andre Ward, who decisioned the Danish star in 2009.

“Of course I want a rematch with Ward, but I hope that this time he flies out of his country and flies to my country, or to a foreign or neutral place,” Kessler said.

When he began his professional career in 2003, Wilberforce Shihepo started out on a sour note, losing his professional debut against Sydwell Mokhoro. He would later get on track, winning six of his next seven bouts. In 2006, he got his first regional title shot against Stanyslav Kashtanov for the WBC Youth World Super Middleweight title. Unfortunately, Shihepo had to retire due to cuts he suffered during the fight. It was not until 2011 when Shihepo would get another opportunity for a title. This time it was for the interim WBO Africa Super Middleweight title. The “Black Mamba” would not disappoint this time. He won a technical decision over Donald Kampamba. Since capturing the WBO Africa Super Middleweight crown, Shihepo has made one defense of his title, and two successful non-title bouts. His most recent came against Jonas Olah. He stopped Jonas Olah of Hungary in the 1st round in a fight which took place in Offenburg, Germany – on 14th January 2012… This takes his fight record to (17-6-0)…Wilberforce is trained and managed by Nestor Tobias – of Nestor Sunshine Boxing Academy…

NADER Hamdan fears his age and recent boxing record has led to him being shut out from a blockbuster overseas fight despite a top 10 world ranking.

Hamdan is ranked No. 7 in the world by the World Boxing Organisation but has been unable to secure a fight since beating highly rated Australian Daniel Pawsey for his WBO Asia Pacific super middleweight title in July.

“I’m frustrated,” Hamdan, 38, said. “I really thought that when I got the world ranking and being the Asia Pacific champion I’d get some fights but nothing has come in.

“I don’t know what it is — maybe it’s because I’ve still got a heartbeat.”

A possible world title eliminator bout with No. 2 Kelly Pavlik was close to being secured late last year but the US television networks refused to support the event.

Without the backing of a major network, big-name fighters perceive Hamdan as too risky a proposition.

“I don’t think my recent record helped either,” Hamdan, who has one just won of his past five fights.

Unable to secure Pavlik, Hamdan’s team have set their sights on world No. 3 George Groves or a rematch with No. 4 ranked Arthur Abraham — who beat Hamdan in a 12th-round knockout in 2004.

“It’s pretty hard right now but I’m trying to stay healthy,” Hamdan said.

“If I can’t get a fight at super middleweight I’ll move to light heavyweight or cruiserweight.

“I proved in my last fight that I am not a sprinter and I can’t fight these short distances.

“Give me 12 rounds and I can take them down.”

WBO Europe Super middlerweight champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 27KOs) has his eyes fixated on the WBO title held by Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23KOs). Stieglitz is still booked to face former champion Mikkel Kessler in April, but rumors continue to swirl that Abraham may beat the Danish star in the championship race.

“I hope the fight with Stieglitz will take place. Prior to this, however, I will need to have one more fight. If all everything well, I hope that our promoters will enter into negotiations. This fight would be interesting for the boxing fans, and for me personally,” Abraham said.

Chris Meyer, general manager of Sauerland Event, who promote Abraham, is also interested in matching King Arthur against Stieglitz. However, he states that Kessler is still on course to face Stieglitz in April.

“To carry out a fight between Abraham and Stieglitz, we would need a huge arena. However, in mid-April Robert will make a title defense against Mikkel Kessler, and only after that can we say something concrete about a fight between Abraham and Stieglitz,” Meyer said.

Former middleweight world champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 26 KOs) stopped Pablo Farias (19-2, 11 KOs) in the fifth round to capture the WBO’s European super middleweight title at the Baden Arena in Offenburg, Germany. In the fifth round, Abraham dropped Farias three times before the referee waved it off.

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23 KOs) had a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Henry Weber (15-1-1, 3 KOs). The scores were 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109. Stieglitz will now face former champion Mikkel Kessler on April 14 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

WINDHOEK – Namibia’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) Africa Super Middleweight champion and world champion prospect, Wilbeforce Shihepo, made short work of his bout against Janos Olah, at the Baden Arena, Offenburg, Germany on Saturday evening.

The “Black Mamba”, as the hard-punching Shihepo is affectionately known among his followers in Namibia, enjoyed one of his easiest paydays. He twice floored his Hungarian opponent with a vicious right within the opening two minutes of the first round of their non-title bout.

The Namibian was in mean mood and signalled his intentions very early in the opening round as he pounded the Hungarian with a combination of punches that left his opponent in serious pain, but the referee had seen enough.

He came to the Hungarian’s rescue by stopping the contest as Olah could no longer sustain the vicious onslaught from the giant Namibian and rightfully abbreviated the bout by declaring a technical knock-out (TKO) in favour of Shihepo.

The victory extended Shihepo’s (28) record in the paid ranks to 18 wins from 26 bouts, with a remarkable 15 stoppages. His handler Nestor “Sunshine” Tobias could not heap enough praise on the flamboyant boxer and told New Era Sports that he is currently locked in advanced negotiations to line up a title fight for the highly rated Shihepo.

“He’s in good shape and is ready to take on the best on offer in the world. Force is doubtlessly one of the best punchers in world boxing in his weight category and very few boxers would go the distance with him when he is on fire,” boasted Tobias.

Shihepo is currently ranked at No. 11 in world rankings and has a very good chance of staking a claim for a world title, since all boxers ranked in the top 15 are eligible to fight for a world title.

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (40-2, 23 KOs), WBO/WIBF/WBF female super featherweight champion Ramona Kuehne (18-1, 5 KOs) and their teams spent Thursday with a lengthy stroll around the beautiful southern German city of Offenburg. On Saturday Stieglitz defends against WBO #14 Henry Weber (15-0-1, 3 KOs) and Kuehne faces late sub Renata Dömsödi (7-1, 3 KOs)

Robert Stieglitz: “Because of the cancellation of the Kessler fight, I had a long break. The Magdeburg SES fighter Robert Stieglitz confident: “Due to the cancellation of the Kessler fight I had a long break. All the more why I’m happy to be back in the ring in a packed house. I want to show good boxing! I am the champion and must win. I don’t underestimate Henry Weber but I want to further validate my position as a world champion. What comes after this? We’ll see, proceed step-by-step – but the fight against Mikkel Kessler or the other champions is my big goal in 2012.”

Ramona Kuehne: “The new opponent Renata Dömsödi comes from the same training group as the now injured Agota Ilko. Both are equally strong, have the same preparation, and even exactly the same record. It’s fortunately no big change. I’m just happy to be boxing again!”

Today in his hometown of Magdeburg, Germany, WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz finished the sparring phase of his preparations for his January 14 fight against Henry Weber, the first world title defense of any champion in 2012.

“I’m prepared!” declared Stieglitz. “The fight against Henry Weber is on Saturday next week. For my fifth title defense I had a great number of sparring rounds with, for example, Stjepan Bozic, Christopher Rebrasse and my two stablemates, the light heavyweights Robin Krasniqi and Dennis Simcic. Especially Stjepan Bozic was very useful because he is tough and had a great performance against Henry Weber in their last fight. My trainer Dirk Dzembski found the right motivation program in the last two months after the postponement of the fight against Mikkel Kessler and so eight months without a fight. This year 2012 will be my year. Starting with Weber on January 14th I’m highly motivated to cross my gloves with all the other champs in my division!”

According to several sources, Robert Stieglitz (40-2, 23 KOs) will defend his WBO super middleweight title against Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KOs) on April 14 in Copenhagen. The fight was originally scheduled for November, but Kessler suffered an injury in training and the date was pushe back to next year. Both boxers will step in the ring from lengthy layoffs. 30-year-old Stieglitz last fought in April in Magdeburg, when he successfully defended his belt against Khoren Gevor, and the 32-year-old Dane has not fought since June, when he scored a sixth round technical knockout over Mehdi Bouadla.

James DeGale will continue playing the pantomime villain if it sells tickets, but insists the act fails to reflect his true personality.

DeGale’s feud with super-middleweight rival and former amateur stablemate George Groves rages on with the fighters both renewing hostilities on Thursday.

They met at a press conference called to announce that they will both appear on Frank Warren’s bill at ExCeL London on December 9, facing as-yet unnamed opponents.

Eventually they are expected to meet for a second time in a professional ring – Warren wants to make the fight as soon as possible – when DeGale will seek to avenge the points defeat he suffered in May.

Groves won the popularity contest as well as prevailing in the ring and has seen his profile grow since that night at the O2 Arena.

Aware that he will always be cast as the bad guy, DeGale insists Groves brings out the worst in him.

“Anyone who’s not a boxing fan thinks I’m arrogant and too big for my boots,” said the European champion, who will be challenging for the WBO intercontinental title on December 9.

“It hurts me a little bit because everyone who meets and knows me sees that I’m a genuine and humble boy.

“But boxing needs this. It needs the rivalry and the personalities. People see me on TV and say ‘look at him, he’s arrogant’.

“But as long as people keep buying the tickets it doesn’t matter.

“It’s the role I’ll have to continue playing, especially with Groves, because I’ve been made out to be the villain.

“I read a letter in a magazine saying that I’m a control freak, and I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It was crazy.

“Sometimes part of me wants to go on a bit of a charm offensive. In my last fight I was humble and respectful.

“But with George…..I can’t do it.. He’s so smug and horrible. He winds me up.

“There’s real history there and it’s good for boxing. I feel confident around him, he doesn’t feel the same.

“You can feel the tension and it’s not coming from me, I’m cool with it.”

The enmity is based on personality as much as their rivalry in the ring.

The two are vastly different characters, DeGale noisy and self-assured yet affable in a way that is at odds with his public image, while the equally likeable Groves is more thoughtful and grounded, with a quick wit.

Groves believes their contrasting outlooks ensure friendship will always be impossible.

“I’m trying not to be the good guy. I reckon that if I went down the street kicking children I’d still be seen as the good guy!” he said.

“James is himself. You have to let him off the leash and be himself. Let people decide what sort of person he is.

“I just try to be myself, not a goody-two-shoes or a saint.

“I’m sarcastic and like to make fun of people and it’s easy to make fun of James DeGale.

“I don’t think we’ll ever be friends. He’s not my cup of tea. I don’t like who he is, the things he says, the way he acts.”

DeGale craves a rematch as early as possible, but Groves would rather wait to maximise the financial rewards.

“I want that cash cow (DeGale) to keep winning. He’ll be my pension fund one day,” said Groves.

“I got paid a reasonable amount for the first fight and I could get paid a life-changing amount for the second fight.”

WINDHOEK – The mere uttering of the word Wilberforce “Force” Shihepo is enough to send shivers running riot in the bellies of potential opponents.

At 27, Force is determined to unlock his unlimited potential and nothing will stand in the way of the strongly built Namibian when the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Africa Super Middleweight champion squares up against Johannes Pieterson in a non-title eight rounder.

The bout will be the main under card for the much-anticipated Paulus Ambunda/Bongani Mahlangu WBO Africa Bantamweight title fight at the Windhoek Country Club on November 4.

With time not on his side anymore, the flamboyant Shihepo is taking no prisoners and is itching to make short work of his fight against the equally dangerous South African in what promises to be an all-out affair.

The Namibian boasts an impressive record of 15 wins and six defeats from 21 bouts in the paid ranks but has since come of age, while a good chunk of his losses were self inflicted through his carefree lifestyle and inability to keep super fit prior to big fights.

The “Black Mamba”, as the muscular Shihepo is affectionately known among his ardent fans, is now a changed man and destined for greater things with the much sought-after World title the ultimate destination.

His handler Nestor “Sunshine” Tobias is confident that one of his most prized assets is a work in progress and could have the world at his feet once he hits his peak.
“The boy has a lion’s heart required in the tough and demanding rigours of professional boxing and above all, he is courageous and possesses dynamite in both hands – a rare commodity in modern boxing,” raved Tobias about his unpolished gem.

His opponent has 14 wins, six losses and two draws to his credit – certainly a remarkable record not to be taken lightly, but Force is a man possessed and would stop at nothing in realizing his dream of getting a crack at the World title with a comprehensive win over the South African – come the 4th of November 2011.
