Last year, Nonito Donaire established himself as one of the best fighters in the world. Earlier this year, his pro-random drug testing actions made him the cleanest fighter in the world.

After stopping Jorge Arce in his tracks on Saturday night, Donaire established himself as 2012’s top fighter in the world.

A capped a career year in which Donaire won belts in a fourth weight class while scoring wins over four universally regarded Top 10 opponents. Included among the lot was his 9th round stoppage win over Toshiaki Nishioka to gain recognition as the lineal 122 lb. champion.

Despite once again damaging his hands in the bout, Donaire healed quick enough to return to the ring just two months later for his fourth fight of the year. All four bouts aired live on HBO, and Saturday’s performance was the latest reminder of why Donaire is well worthy of such exposure. All told, his only concern wasn’t so much his opponent but whether or not his right hand would hold up.

“We didn’t go hard in sparring except to try out (the right hand),” Donaire admitted. “We were nervous going into this fight, but we were confident no matter what.”

The three rounds exhibited in the night’s main event justified such confidence.

Few if any experts gave Arce more than a puncher’s chance in this fight, but the former four-division champion never put himself in position to even make that happen.  Donaire was surgical with his jab, keeping Arce within desired range, leading to the bout’s first knockdown early in the second round. Both fighters simultaneously landed right hands, but Donaire’s proved more damaging as Arce’s glove touched the canvas to produce the correctly called knockdown.

Arce attempted to press the action in the third, but Donaire proved game to the change of pace. A left hook for the Fil-Am star landed while his back was against the ropes. Arce’s most notable moments of the round came in the form of machismo, banging his chin and daring Donaire to bring it.

Be careful what you ask for.

Donaire dropped Arce twice in the final minute of the round. A right hand and two left hooks forced Arce to the canvas, to which he arose on wobbly legs. Sensing a finished opponent, Donaire moved in for the kill. A sensational left hook put his older foe down and out. Referee Laurence Cole began to count, but waved it off midway through as Arce laid flat on his back.

The official time was 2:59 of round three.

Clearly establishing himself as the world’s premiere 122 lb. king, the only question left is whether Donaire’s reign of terror in the past 12 months is enough to earn Fighter of the Year honors.

For now, Donaire is content to have properly served his fan base.

“There were a lot of fans who were telling me, ‘You gotta get him’ for Filipino respect,” said Donaire, speaking to the Mexico v. Philippines rivalry and Juan Manuel Marquez’ stunning knockout of Manny Pacquiao last week. A replay of the event preceded Saturday’s live portion on HBO, and was concluded with Donaire winning his fourth fight of the year as he improves to 31-1 (20KO).

Donaire has taken a stance on a lot of subjects. Among them is his signing on for 24/7/365 drug testing, as he is subject to random testing conducted by Voluntary Anti-Doping Agenct (VADA). He also proudly serves his Filipino roots – as evidenced by his being accompanied in the ring by Apl.De.Ap of Black Eyed Peas.

His proud heritage taken into consideration, Donaire also acknowledged his many friends and family on the other side of the rivalry

“I’m friends with a lot of Mexicans. My trainer Robert Garcia is Mexican,” Donaire pointed out, which also spoke to the friendship beyond the ring with his opponent.

Also speaking to that is Arce himself, whose post-fight announcement was perhaps more revealing than what he offered in three rounds of one-sided action at the hands of Donaire.

“My career is over. I lost to the best man,” insisted Arce, who falls to 61-7-2 (46KO). “I have a family to take care of. I have my children. I promised them that if I lost, I would retire. I lost and I’m a man of my word.”

While Arce’s career winds down, Donaire looks to 2013 and beyond. World titles in four weight classes are eye-catching enough, but the rising superstar still believes there is plenty of work to be done.

“I want to get (Abner) Mares and he’s calling me out,” Donaire acknowledged. “But if that doesn’t happen, we always have Guillermo Rigondeaux next.”

Rigondeaux was supposed to appear in the televised undercard, a showcase slot that would have went a long way towards building increased interest in a head-on collision. His role was instead reduced to the role of spectator, when originally scheduled opponent Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym was denied a license by the Texas Boxing Commission after failing his pre-fight medical exams.

Donaire and Rigondeaux are both promoted by Top Rank, the chief rival to Golden Boy Promotions, the promotional banner under which Mares fights.

The politics of the sport suggest one fight is a lot easier than the other to be made. After scoring four big wins in the ring in 2012, Donaire isn’t scared for one more tough fight on either side of the ropes.

“I have already (called out my promoter),” Donaire emphatically stated when asked if he would challenge Top Rank to change its stance on doing business with Golden Boy for the sake of securing a fight with Mares. “For the past two years, I have already.”

For the past two years, Donaire has also established himself as one of the very best in the world, dating back to his explosive second round knockout of Fernando Montiel in Feb. ’11. The night marked the first of six straight appearances on HBO.

The last of that stretch has possibly established Nonito Donaire as 2012’s Fighter of the Year.

WBO/ IBF  Super Batamweight Unification Title Bout

Location: Home Depot, Carson, California, United States

Promoter: Top Rank / Teiken Promotions

Supervisor: Richard De Cuir

Referee: Raul Caiz Sr.

Judges: Ralph McKnight, Carlos Ortiz Jr. Fritz Werner

Result: Donaire won by TKO on the 9th round.

MANILA, Philippines – WBO and IBF super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. admits he may be facing the most dangerous opponent he had so far in Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan.

Donaire and Nishioka met face to face for the first time to announce their fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Oct. 13, and both fighters vowed to put on a show.

“With the ‘Speed King’ and the ‘Filipino Flash’…this fight can end at any moment, at any time,” said Donaire (29-0-2, with 18 KOs), whose last outing was a unanimous decision victory over Jeffrey Mathebula last July.

“This is an all-out war between Nishioka and me,” he added during the official press conference.

Nishioka (39-4-3, with 24 KOs), the current WBC super bantamweight champion, echoed his Filipino-American foe’s statement.

“I would like for both of us to be in the best condition and put on the best fight possible. I plan to win,” said Nishioka, whose impressive fight resume includes wins over former Mexican champions Jhonny Gonzales and Rafael Marquez.

The Japanese is coming off a 16-fight winning streak that dates back to 2004 and has had success fighting both at home and overseas – a fact that Donaire openly acknowledged.

“Nishioka has beaten other guys in their territory and on their home turf,” Donaire told ringtv.com’s Lem Satterfield the other day. “He’s defeated some good people by knockout, so I know that he’s very, very dangerous.”

Donaire holds Nishioka in such high regard that he even claimed the Japanese to be his most-complete opponent to date.

“Nishioka is the most complete fighter I’ve faced other than, maybe, (Fernando) Montiel. Montiel was a complete fighter and stuff like that, but this guy is even more of a veteran. But I am a fighter who seeks challenges and who seeks to fight the best out there,” said Donaire, who in 2011 destroyed Montiel in just two rounds in perhaps the most impressive win of his career.

“This is a must-see fight. There are no words that can describe how grand this fight is. This is the best of the best,” he added.

alt

When Nonito Donaire defends his IBF and WBO junior featherweight belts in an HBO-televised clash against Japanese southpaw veteran Toshiaki Nishioka, he will be facing a legend.

And Donaire knows full well what is at stake.

“To me, Nishioka is the best. If you want to be the best, you’ve got face the best and try to make the big fights happen. If it doesn’t happen because of money or negotiations, then there’s nothing you can do. But if you’re a fighter, then, to me, you have to find the fighters who can challenge you and who will put you at risk,” said Donaire.

“You put yourself at risk of losing, at risk of getting hurt, at risk of losing your life. That’s all part of boxing and that’s all a part of challenging yourself. It makes you or breaks you. That’s the kind of mentality that you need and the kind of mentality that I try to have.”

A Tokyo resident who turned 36 in July, Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 knockouts) has not lost since falling by unanimous decision to long-reigning WBC bantamweight titleholder and Thai legend Veeraphol Sahaprom in March of 2004 — a span of eight years and five months.

During that time, Nishioka is riding a 16-bout winning streak that includes 10 knockouts and a 12th-round stoppage of Genaro Garcia in January of 2009. The win over Garcia was the first defense of the belt Nishioka earned with a unanimous decision over Napapol Sor Rungvisai in September of 2008.

Although he will be making only his fourth appearance in the United States when he meets Donaire, 29, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Oct. 13, Nishioka’s skills and familarity with longevity and durability rank him with dignitaries such as 35-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr., 37-year-old Sergio Martinez and 47-year-old Bernard Hopkins.

“Not only does he have speed, power and experience, but he’s also a southpaw. So there are a lot of factors as far as his style that I have not seen in other opposition,” said Donaire.

“With his being a southpaw, I’ve not seen this much of a combination of that and other things about his skills all in one fighter and who is a left-hander like Nishioka. I mean, he’s strong and he’s fast and he hits hard.”

alt

But Nishioka will be ending a nearly year-long absence from competition against Donaire (29-1, 18 KOs), having last been in the ring for a unanimous decision over ex-beltholder Rafael Marquez in defense of his WBC belt on Oct. 1 of last year.

Nishioka made history by defeating Marquez (41-7, 37 KOs), becoming the first man from Japan to successfully defend his crown on American soil in what was his seventh defense at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Nishioka has since vacated his crown that is now worn by Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KOs), who rose into the 122-pound divisionn to vanquish Eric Morel  by unanimous decision in April for that title.

Nishioka is the last man to defeat WBC featherweight titleholder Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KOs), of Mexico City, who will pursue his 13th straight win and his 12th knockout during that run in his fifth defense against former 122-pound titleholder Daniel Ponce de Leon (43-4, 35 KOs) on Sept. 15.

In order to defeat the hard-punching Gonzalez, Nishioka rose from a first-round knockdown to both drop and stop him in the third round of their fight in May of 2009.

Nishioka was equally impressive during two other appearances in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino respectively, where he stopped Evangelio Perez in the first round in December of 2002, and Jose Alonso in the fourth round in November of 2006.

“Nishioka has beaten other guys in their territory and on their home turf,” said Donaire. “He’s defeated some good people by knockout, so I know that he’s very, very dangerous.”

Donaire, meawhile, has not ended a fight within the 12-round distance since February of last year, when his second-round knockout dethroned Fernando Montiel as WBO and WBC bantamweight titleholder.

alt

The win over Montiel was the second for Donaire as a bantamweight, following a fourth-round knockout of Volodymyr Sydorenko in December of 2010. Sydorenko’s nose was broken during a bout in which he was dropped once each in the first, third and fourth rounds.

Donaire dropped Montiel, meanwhile, with a stunning left hook, followed by a short right uppercut that left the loser’s arms outstretched over his head and both legs twitching. Montiel rose on unsteady legs, fell back down, and then rose yet again and stumbled into referee Russell Mora, who waved an end to the fight.

Donaire’s win over Montiel was his fourth straight by stoppage and his 10th in 25 consecutive triumphs. Since then, however, Donaire has not looked as menacing, having to grind out three straight decision victories.

In his final bout in defense of his WBC and WBO bantamweight titles in October, Donaire was frustrated by a defensive-minded Omar Narvaez, a previously unbeaten WBO junior bantamweight titleholder.

In February, Donaire earned his WBO 122-pound belt by split-decision over Wifredo Vazquez Jr., and followed that up by dethroning Jeffrey Mathebula for the IBF title in July.

“Nishioka is the most complete fighter I’ve faced other than, maybe, Montiel. Montiel was a complete fighter and stuff like that, but this guy is even more of a veteran. Like I have said, Nishioka has been a good fighter all around. But I am a fighter who seeks challenges and who seeks to fight the best out there,” said Donaire.

“The only reason some of the other fights didn’t come through were because of negotiations. I try to fight the best out there, even with this opportunity that I’ve got against Nishioka. He’s a tough opponent. You don’t become a better fighter by not stepping up and challenging other people out there, and to me, Nishioka is the best guy out there.”

Trainer and former world champion Robert Garcia says WBO Jr. Featherweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is in “real good shape” as he prepares for his planned July 21 title defense possibly against former world super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares or IBF super bantamweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula of South Africa.

Garcia told the BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that he had visited Donaire who had begun training, some two weeks ago,  and “he already looked in real good shape. He looked solid, very strong.”

He said he would join Donaire who trains at the Top Rank gym in Las Vegas once the date and opponent are finalized and that he would travel to Vegas to personally  handle Donaire’s training.

Garcia said while he hadn’t any idea of who Top Rank and Donaire’s manager Cameron Dunkin have picked as an opponent he said that if its Mijares “well be okay. It’s a tough fight because Mijares is a great champion so it will be an interesting fight.”

One of the emerging top trainers Garcia emphasized that Donaire is “ready for anybody. He doesn’t make those decisions. Its Cameron Dunkin who is the best in the business so he knows whom he’s going to match him (Donaire) up with. Cameron and Top Rank do their job and we’ll be ready to do the same.”

HBO and Showtime want to feature WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in a fight card in July.

That’s the word from Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that Donaire and his wife Rachel were in his offices in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Arum indicated they talked about Donaire’s next fight even as he revealed that HBO and Showtime were “both talking about a July date.”

As of now the opponent being considered is former world champion and classy boxer  Cristian Mijares even as Arum scuttled suggestions by promoter Fernando Beltran that Donaire take on featherweight champion Orlando Salido sometime after Donaire faces Jorge “Travieso” Arce perhaps in November and hopefully wins.

Arum wants Donaire to fight at super bantamweight for some time as Donaire himself has said he wants to unify the title by facing talented southpaw and WBC  champion Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan in a four-fight program he wishes to fulfill this year.

Donaire had his first fight this year when he won a comfortable twelve round unanimous decision over former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in San Antonio, Texas last February 4.

He had previously won the WBC/WBO bantamweight title with a spectacular 2nd round knockout of Mexican veteran Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel on February 19, 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino and then scored a twelve round shutout in his first title defense against undefeated two-division champion Omar Andres Narvaez of Argentina on October 22, 2011 at The Theater in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Donaire then moved up in weight and captured the WBO super bantamweight title.

The 29 year old who is ranked No. 4 in the Ring Magazine pound for pound list behind “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao, undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr and middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez is expected in Manila on Sunday for the 12th Annual Gabriel “Flash” Elorde awards at the Dusit Thani hotel where congressman Pacquiao will be the guest of honor and speaker.

Mijares is a 30 year old southpaw with a record of 44-6-2 with 20 knockouts and is coming off back to back TKO victories. He is the former WBO bantamweight champion but has moved up to super bantamweight in recent fights.

He scored a 3rd round TKO over Jonathan Perez (19-8, 16 KO’s) on September 10, 2011 followed by another 3rd round TKO over Alejandro Valdez (25-6-2, 19 KO’s) on December 17, 2011.

Mijares is scheduled to face another former  WBO bantamweight champion Cruz Carbajal for the WBC International silver title on March 31.

As an amateur, Donaire won three national amateur championships (National Silver Gloves in 1998, National Junior Olympics in 1999, and the National USA Tournament in 2000) and won one international amateur championships (International Junior Olympics in 1999). He began his 2001 and quickly won his first regional title (WBO Asia Pacific flyweight title) a year later, defeating Kaichon Sor Vorapin by knockout in the second round.

It was not until 2007 that he claimed his first world title when he defeated previously unbeaten IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan by fifth round technical knockout. Donaire made three successful defenses of his title until he decided to move up in weight to challenge Rafael Concepcion for the interim WBA jr. bantamweight title. He went on to defeat Concepcion by unanimous decision. He defended his

WBA interim title twice and, once again, moved up in weight to challenge Fernando Montiel for his WBO/WBC bantamweight titles. In spectacular fashion, Donaire knocked out Montiel in two rounds. Donaire then faced Argentinian Omar Narvaez in New York City on October 22. In a slow action fight, Donaire cruised to earn a unanimous decision victory over Narvaez.

Once again, Donaire decided to move up in weight and challenge Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the vacant WBO Jr. Featherweight title, in search for his fourth title in a different division. Even after apparently suffering an injury to his left hand, Donaire went on to defeat Vazquez by split decision and captured the vacant WBO Jr. Featherweight title

REGIONAL TITLES:

1. WBO Asia Pacific Flyweight Champion

2. NABF Super Flyweight Champion

3. WBC Continental Americas Bantamweight Champion

WORLD TITLES:

1. IBF Flyweight Champion

2. WBA Jr. Bantamweight Champion

3. WBC Bantamweight Champion

4. WBO Bantamweight Champion

5. WBO Jr. Featherweight Champion

Former WBC/IBF and WBA super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares who has moved up to super bantamweight is being groomed as the next opponent of newly crowned WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire when he makes his  first title defense planned for July 14 in Texas.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that promoter Fernando Beltran was visiting the Top Rank office this week and hopefully they will finalize details for the title defense against Mijares on July 14.

He said Mijares has a scheduled fight against former WBO bantamweight champion Cruz Carbajal (32-18-2, 26 KO’s) in Mexico on  April 14  “and then he’ll be ready to fight Donaire in July.”

The 30 year old Mijares is an excellent boxer but does not have the power of Donaire even though Mijares won his last two fights as a super bantamweight by stoppages. He scored a 3rd round TKO over 25 year old Jonathan Perez (19-9, 16 KO’s” on September 10, 2011 and followed it up with another 3rd round TKO over 28 year old Alejandro Valdez (25-6-2, 19 KO’s) on December 17, 2011.

Mijares won the WBC super flyweight title with a 10th round TKO over Japan’s Katsushige Kawashima opn January 3, 2007 and grabbed the IBF title with a unanimous twelve round decision over Juan Alberto Rosas on December 11, 2010 after winning the WBA 115 pound title with a twelve round split decision over Alexander Munoz on May 17, 2008.

After losing the bantamweight crown to Nehomar Cermeno on September 12, 2009, Mijares has won 8 fights in a row, 5 of them by knockout and 2 at 122 pounds.

Four division champion Donaire is coming off an impressive twelve round unanimous decision  over former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in San Antonio, Texas last February 4 in which he dropped Vazquez in the 9th round with a patented left hook despite having hurt his hand early in the fight..

The 29 year old has a record of 28-1 with 18 knockouts and is ranked No. 4 in Ring Magazine’s pound for pound list headed by his countryman and eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

For his smashing 2nd round demolition of veteran Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel to win the WBC/WBO bantamweight title last February 19, 2011 and his twelve round shutout win his  first defense against previously undefeated two division champion Andres Narvaez of Argentina on October 19, 2011  the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association named Donaire the “Athlete of the Year” for 2011.

WBO bantamweight champion Jorge Arce (60-6, 46KOs) has warned the critics to avoid counting him out in a possible September clash against Nonito Donaire (28-1, 18KOs), the WBO’s champion at super bantamweight.

Arce expects to land an undercard position on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley pay-per-view, which takes place on June 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. And then he anticipates a clash with Donaire in September.

“Right now we are taking it step by step, fight by fight. We’ll [move on] to June 9 and then face Nonito Donaire in September – because that’s the fight I want,” Arce said. “A lot of people are leaving me for dead with Donaire, but I have to remind you that [I was viewed in the same light] against Yo-Sam Choi, Hussein Hussein and Wilfredo Vazquez – and you saw how those fights played out.”

“Boxing is about styles and moments. I think Donaire will beat Toshiaki Nishioka if they fight, because [Donaire] is younger and faster. We have seen flaws in Donaire and he showed them in the fight with Vazquez in San Antonio, and that’s where we plan to attack.”
