Abraham’s Trainer Expects Tough Test From Wilczewski

As we previously reported, Piotr Wilczewski (30-2, 10 KOs) will be the opponent for WBO Europe Super Middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 27 KOs) on the 31st of March in Kiel. Abraham’s trainer Ulli Wegner, has a lot of respect for the Polish boxer and expects a much tougher challenge than the one presented by Abraham’s opponent in January, Pablo Farias.

“Wilczewski is a very versatile fighter. He was a good amateur, and last year he won the championship belt of Europe while fighting in rough terrain in Finland. He is a much more demanding fighter than Farias. I am confident that fans in Kiel will see an interesting fight,” said Wegner.

For his part, Arthur Abraham said – “We have already started preparations for the fight in Kiel. First I have to overcome Wilczewski, and then I’ll get a world title fight.”

As a nice distraction from the everyday training, WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz celebrated “Rose Monday” among the carnival revelers in Köthen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, the hometown of his trainer Dirk Dzemski. The champion was invited to b guest of honor in the largest carnival parade in Central Germany. Just beginning his training camp for his April 14 clash with Mikkel Kessler in Copenhagen, this trip was a pleasant and above all fun change of pace. Tens of thousands were on hand to take part in the festivities as the parade moved through the city Köthen with Stieglitz right in the middle tossing sweets from a float, shouting “KU-KA-KÖ” and of course signing many autographs.

If you were one of the many boxing fans that were hoping to see American talents WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward or Andre Dirrell get the first crack at the April 14th winner of the Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KO’s) vs. Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23 KO’s), you can pretty much forget all about that happening because it’s not going to go down.

WBO Europe Super Middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 27 KO’s) was recently installed as the number #2 contender by the World Boxing Organization and he’s already talking about getting a shot at the winner of the Kessler-Stieglitz fight.

Both Kessler and Abraham fight for Sauerland Promotions, which kind of makes it academic that the fight will be happening next. Will be surprised if Kessler faces Abraham rather than Dirrell or Ward? Nope! I never was crazy enough to think that Kessler would fight either of them in the first place because he already got spanked by Ward once in November 2009 in the Super Six tournament and he’s been making excuses ever since.

And facing Dirrell is like the same as Kessler fighting Ward. Both of them are almost carbon copy talents, only Dirrell brings a little more hand and foot speed and defensive skills to the table.

Kessler will play it safe by fighting the short 5’9” Abraham to get an easy win rather than risking his hide fighting the likes of Ward or Dirrell and losing the WBO belt in his first title defense.

However, I have strong doubts that Kessler will even get by Stieglitz because that’s going to be a very tough fight for him and he’s already badly faded from what he was in 2007. Stieglitz has gotten Kessler at the right point in his career when Stieglitz is at his best and Kessler is on the downside of his career. All Stieglitz has to do is outwork Kessler and he’ll get the ‘W’ in this fight.

Former two-time champion Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33KOs) is already training for his next fight, scheduled on April 14th in Copenhagen against WBO super middleweight king Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23KOs). Kessler is not taking Stieglitz for granted and expects a tough fight.

“He’s strong and I know that. I know that we will win against Stieglitz but it will be a tough fight. I’ve fought the best in the world, but Stieglitz is a physically strong fighter and he has strength for all of the twelve rounds and you have to be in very good condition to beat him. That’s very important,” Kessler said.

One of the goals of Kessler is to obtain a rematch with WBA/WBC champion Andre Ward, who decisioned the Danish star in 2009.

“Of course I want a rematch with Ward, but I hope that this time he flies out of his country and flies to my country, or to a foreign or neutral place,” Kessler said.

As BoxingScene.com had reported a few days ago – for the first time in many years, the Klitschko brothers have come together for a joint training camp in Austria. The two brothers have scheduled defenses only two weeks apart in Germany.

WBO/WBA/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko defends his titles on March 3rd against Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22KOs) at ESPIRIT Arena in Dusseldorf. Two weeks earlier, on February 18th, Vitali Klitshko (43-2, 40KOs) defends the WBC title against Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9KOs) at Olympiahalle in Munich.

We get a short glimpse at the closest the Klitschko brothers will ever get to fighting each other, as the two brothers stepped in the ring and worked with each other for movement and defense. The two brothers have not sparred with each other in many years and this is the first time, in a long time, where both of them stepped in the ring with each other for a training session. The two brothers were very focused and displayed quick moves as they gave each other advice to avoid incoming shots.

WBO Europe Super middlerweight champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 27KOs) has his eyes fixated on the WBO title held by Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23KOs). Stieglitz is still booked to face former champion Mikkel Kessler in April, but rumors continue to swirl that Abraham may beat the Danish star in the championship race.

“I hope the fight with Stieglitz will take place. Prior to this, however, I will need to have one more fight. If all everything well, I hope that our promoters will enter into negotiations. This fight would be interesting for the boxing fans, and for me personally,” Abraham said.

Chris Meyer, general manager of Sauerland Event, who promote Abraham, is also interested in matching King Arthur against Stieglitz. However, he states that Kessler is still on course to face Stieglitz in April.

“To carry out a fight between Abraham and Stieglitz, we would need a huge arena. However, in mid-April Robert will make a title defense against Mikkel Kessler, and only after that can we say something concrete about a fight between Abraham and Stieglitz,” Meyer said.

Former middleweight world champion Arthur Abraham (33-3, 26 KOs) stopped Pablo Farias (19-2, 11 KOs) in the fifth round to capture the WBO’s European super middleweight title at the Baden Arena in Offenburg, Germany. In the fifth round, Abraham dropped Farias three times before the referee waved it off.

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (41-2, 23 KOs) had a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Henry Weber (15-1-1, 3 KOs). The scores were 116-112, 118-110 and 119-109. Stieglitz will now face former champion Mikkel Kessler on April 14 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

On February 25 in Stuttgart, WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck wants to become the first German world heavyweight champion since the great Max Schmeling when he takes on WBA regular champion Alexander Povetkin of Russia. “I’m very happy about the chance to fight the heavyweight world championship,” says Huck. “That to me is like winning the lottery. I really want to be the heir to Schmeling. But actually I see Povetkin only as a stopover on the way to the Klitschko brothers….I don’t understand why Povetkin has never taken the chance to climb into the ring against Wladimir. I think he’s afraid of the Klitschko brothers. I’m not.”

“I want to beat Povetkin, then compete against the two brothers. I know that Vitali and Wladimir are strong, and I respect their achievements. But I’m sure I can beat both of them. And anyway, what is it bigger than competing with the best? Why would someone enter the boxing ring if he doesn’t want to make the best possible fight? I can’t understand that.”

Huck is preparing in Berlin for his first fight as a heavyweight. “I’ve already gained the necessary pounds, I feel very comfortable with the higher weight. My energy levels have improved. I have more power than most heavyweights. At the same time I’m fast and physically in top condition. I’ll be training in the coming weeks as hard as ever. This is my big chance and I’m going to use it!”

WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (34-1, 25KOs) is expecting a score to be settled on February 25th in Stuttgart, Germany, when he moves up to heavyweight to challenge WBA “regular” champion Alexander Povektin (23-0, 16KOs). Some of Huck’s critics are wondering if the boxer should have cleared up the cruiserweight ranks, like David Haye and Evander Holyfield, before a move to heavyweight was finalized. Huck disagrees. He feels there is some bad blood from a past sparring session and the opportunity was too good to pass up.

“Holyfield and David Haye had to take a few fights at heavyweight before going for the championship. With me, I have an immediate opportunity to fight for the heavyweight belt. And I’d be a fool, to give up this opportunity. I want to fight Povetkin right now. After all, he said that we still have old score to settle. Apparently he’s thinking about our sparring session from a long time ago,” Huck said. “When I sparred with Povetkin, I weighed 196-pounds. And that was enough. Now I weigh 213-pounds.”

Maritim Hotel, Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany – In a fierce battle, up-and-coming WBO #6 light heavyweight Robin Krasniqi improved to 37-2, with 13 KOs, after a spirited twelfth-round TKO over dуtermined Frenchman Hakim Zoulikha (16-3, 8 KOs).

This fight was very much different than the previous encounter thanks to the will and determination of the challenger. Zoulikha, 25, and the smaller of the two, tried to find his luck on the inside. The Frenchman lacked quality punching power but was very active in winging wild hooks and swings to scare the lanky Albanian. Krasniqi, his real name being Haxhi, used some elements of rope-a-dope tactics alongside constant lateral movement and uppercuts on the inside. The first couple of rounds was rather even but in the third and in the fourth stanzas Krasniqi reached some success with his jabs and uppercuts to trouble Zoulikha a bit.

Rounds five and six turned into a crowd-pleasing war with both fighters swinging wildly in order to deliver one meaningful punch. It soon became obvious that the close quarters favored the French brawler over the German boxer, both fighters landing bombs in a sensational sixth round. Sensing the fight was going his opponent’s way, Krasniqi found something in him to turn back the tide. He increased the distance between him and Zoulikha in the second half of the fight. He was also fresher than the Frenchman and he got better and better with each fought round.

As the bout progressed into the final quarter Krasniqi’s advantage became clearly visible. However, he was unable to rock durable Zulikha up until the middle of the twelfth and final stanza. It was when his combinations had finally penetrated Zoulikha’s guard and started to wobble him. After a lengthy barrage of unanswered punches referee Lahcen Oumghar of Netherlands halted the action with just five seconds remaining. Krasniqi retained his WBO European title in a surprisingly thrilling encounter.

Undefeated WBO middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog (19-0, 15KOs) is ready to face WBA king Felix Sturm (36-2-2, 15KOs) in any location – even in Sturm’s home of Germany. Pirog has been mentioned as possible opponent for Sturm on April 13th. Pirog is holding out hope that Sturm follows through with a possible fight, but he’s not sure if anything is going to actually happen with the ongoing rumors.

“Finally, [Sturm] has already started talking about a fight with me, although in the past he’s been silent on this subject. So, there is the possibility to organize a fight between us, although he had previously tried to ignore me. I hope this fight doesn’t just stay at the level of conversation, because I’m ready to act – even in Germany,” Pirog said. “If Sturm decides to fight me, I’m ready to sign the contract tomorrow. It’s important for me to have this fight happen.”

WBO/WBA/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is still set on facing 39-year-old former cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck next year on March 3rd in Germany despite Wladimir’s recent hospitalization for kidney stones.

The medical problem caused Wladimir to postpone his previously scheduled fight with Mormeck and push it to March.

Some boxing fans were hoping that Wladimir would use the opportunity to go in a different direction by picking a better opponent than Mormeck to fight, but Wladimir has made up his mind that he still plans on fighting Mormeck.

Wladimir said to eastsideboxing.com’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio program “Mormeck was so self-confident and he’s in the top 10 in the heavyweight division…I will not view Mormeck as such a bad fighter. He’s experienced. His style could become dangerous if I give him a chance, and I will not give a chance to any opponent.”

Mormeck does have excellent power, but excellent for a cruiserweight, not a heavyweight. He’s shown little of his once impressive power since moving up to the heavyweight division in three fights. Mormeck is going to have his hands full just trying to work his way close enough to land anything against Wladimir.

The only real question about this fight is whether Wladimir will suffer another injury to delay it. Wladimir twice suffered injuries that wiped out fights against Dereck Chisora before finally giving up on the fight. And then recently Wladimir’s kidney stone problem that postponed the Mormeck fight.

Mormeck draws a lot of attention from boxing fans from his home country France, and it would be interesting to find out how much money Mormeck can potentially bring in for television money over there for a Klitschko-Mormeck fight.

You would have to wonder whether Wladimir has negotiated to get that money thrown in the pot for this fight. If not, then I don’t see this as a fight that’s really worthy of Wladimir. He says the top contenders Robert Helenius and Tyson Fury aren’t ready to fight him now, but there has to be better contenders than Mormeck lying around and available for Wladimir to fight.

Wladimir Klitschko’s world heavyweight title showdown with Jean-Marc Mormeck has been rescheduled for March 3 in Dusseldorf.

Klitschko had been due to put WBA, IBF and WBO belts on the line against the Frenchman on Saturday – only for the Ukrainian to pull out following an operation to have a kidney stone removed.

However Klitschko, who toppled David Haye for the WBA strap in his last outing, has now confirmed the mandatory defence will go ahead at the ESPRIT Arena.

Klitschko said in a statement: “I know that I am the favourite in all my fights but I also know that each opponent is motivated to be in the best shape ever when he fights me.

“Mormeck is one of the most experienced fighters I have ever faced. He has had many world title fights, has a very good technique, can take a lot of punches and is very intelligent inside the ring.

“To underestimate him would be a fatal mistake. I am very happy to return to the ESPRIT Arena where I fought against Eddie Chambers. The spectators and the atmosphere for that fight were great and I am sure it will be again this time.”

As previously reported, heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko pulled out of his fight against France’s Jean-Marc Mormeck. Wladimir had surgery to remove a kidney stone over the weekend and was still feeling ill. The fight had been scheduled for Saturday in Duesseldorf.

Klitschko’s manager, Bernd Boente, revealed that March 3 was a possible new date. The IBF would have to approve because Klitschko would be requested to fight a mandatory challenger on that date.

“We hope to know in two or three days. Mormeck is also ready to accept it,” Boente said.

Klitschko, the WBO, IBF, IBO and WBA champion, had abdominal pain at his training camp in Austria on Friday. The 35-year-old Ukrainian was taken to Innsbruck for treatment before he was transferred to a Duesseldorf hospital. The stone was removed Saturday, but Klitschko returned to the hospital Sunday before a scheduled television appearance.

Older brother Vitali Klitschko, the WBC champion, appeared on the live program and said Wladimir became ill shortly before the show and returned to the Duesseldorf hospital. He declined to elaborate.

The 39-year-old Mormeck is a former WBC and WBA unified cruiserweight champion. He has won all his fights since moving to the heavyweight division in 2009. He has a career record of 36 wins (22 KOs) and four defeats.

Saturday’s fight was supposed to be Klitschko’s 20th title bout and his first appearance since beating Britain’s David Haye in July. His record is 56-3 with 49 KOs.

According to sources close to the situation, next week’s heavyweight championship fight between WBO/IBF/WBA-kingpin Wladimir Klitschko and former cruiserweight champ Jean-Marc Mormeck has been called off after Klitschko suffered from nephroliths, kidney stones. The champion was admitted twice to the hospital over the weekend. Klitschko had the kidney stones removed but suffered from complications, making his title defense impossible.

Klitschko manager Bernd Bönte confirmed the cancelation, stating: “It is true, the fight is canceled. Wladimir is really sad and devastated, but he suffered from extreme pain.” The heavyweight champion had kidney stones removed in surgery on Saturday but suffered an inflammation. He went back to the hospital yesterday, canceling an appearance alongside his brother Vitali in a German TV show. The elder Klitschko said: “He felt nauseous and went to the clinic. He isn’t feeling so well.” A press conference with further updates is scheduled for later today in Dusseldorf, Germany

BoxingScene.com has been advised by Wilfried Sauerland, of Sauerland Event, that discussions are ongoing for Marco Huck (34-1, 25KOs) to defend his WBO cruiserweight title against mandatory challenger Ola Afolabi (18-2-3, 8KOs). The fight is being targeted for February or March. Afolabi dropped a twelve round decision to Huck in 2009, but fought his way back to a mandatory position with four straight victories.

Sauerland, who handles the managerial duties for Huck, denied that there were ongoing negotiations for a unification with WBA champion Guillermo Jones. In a recent BoxingScene article, Jones revealed that he was traveling to Miami, Florida to meet with his promoter, Don King, to get an update on King’s progress to secure a unification with Huck.

He faces British boxer Dereck Chisora (15-1, 9 KOs) for the vacant European heavyweight title. Helenius wants to continue his string of battering victories. Five of his last six opponents have failed to go the distance and three of them were former heavyweight world champions.

On the same show, Braekhus defends against Kuulei Kupihea (7-1, 2 KOs). Both boxers are trained by eight-time German coach of the year Ulli Wegner.

WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck renewed his promotional contract with Sauerland Event for two more years. “I am very happy with the way we have been working together over the years and I am looking forward to keeping up the great work”, says Huck. “There is no reason for me to change anything at the moment. I am still young, and I want to win more world titles. I am sure that my team at Sauerland will help me to achieve my goals.”

The 27 year old powerhouse is tied to Sauerland since starting his pro career in November 2004. Huck won 34 of his 35 pro fights including 25 KO-victories.

His only loss came in December 2007 when he challenged Steve “USS” Cunningham for the IBF world championship. In September 2008 Huck won the European cruiserweight champion and finally claimed the WBO world title in August 2009 by outworking Victor Emilio Ramirez. „Captain“ Huck has successfully defended his title eight times, most recently with a stunning KO over Argentina’s Rogelio Rossi. Huck will return to action early in 2012.

According to several sources, Robert Stieglitz (40-2, 23 KOs) will defend his WBO super middleweight title against Mikkel Kessler (44-2, 33 KOs) on April 14 in Copenhagen. The fight was originally scheduled for November, but Kessler suffered an injury in training and the date was pushe back to next year. Both boxers will step in the ring from lengthy layoffs. 30-year-old Stieglitz last fought in April in Magdeburg, when he successfully defended his belt against Khoren Gevor, and the 32-year-old Dane has not fought since June, when he scored a sixth round technical knockout over Mehdi Bouadla.
