Unbeaten WBO #2 lightweight Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo (21-0, 15 KOs) scored a fifth round TKO over WBC #11 super featherweight Juan Jose “Piquet” Martinez (25-3, 17 KOs) to retain his WBO Latino lightweight title on Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York city. Verdejo, in command all the way, staggered Martinez in round five and got the stoppage from referee Michael Ortega with his followup barrage. Time was 2:40.

SAN JUAN — El joven prospecto peso ligero Félix ‘El Diamante’ Verdejo está inmerso en una fase muy importante de cara a su combate del próximo 27 de febrero en el Teatro del Madison Square Garden en Nueva York: la etapa de fuerza y afinamiento corporal, la misma que a finales de año le revelará si se inclinará por una oportunidad titular en las 130 o 135 libras.

Ricky Márquez, entrenador y manejador del invicto peleador puertorriqueño, reveló que Verdejo comenzó hace unas semanas las sesiones de carga más duras de su preparación.

El resultado: mucho mejor que lo que pensaba el propio Márquez.

“Cada vez lo veo más fuerte. Más maduro físicamente. Estamos llegando a ese punto físico que precisamente queríamos ver”, comentó Márquez.

“Se está logrando ese desarrollo y todo va viento en popa. Estamos en la etapa de carga, la más fuerte de la preparación”.

Verdejo, de apenas 22 años, tiene récord de 19-0 y 14 nocáuts. En la ‘Gran Manzana’ enfrentará al también invicto peleador brasileño William Silva en un combate en el que
hará su segunda defensa del título Latino de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo del peso ligero.

Aunque actualmente pelea en las 135 libras, Márquez aseguró que no descartan incursionar en las 130, ya que los resultados, tanto en el gimnasio como en la nutrición les podría permitir buscar fortuna en cualquiera de ambas.

“Aquí lo que más sorprende es que a medida que su cuerpo se desarrolla, adquiere más velocidad y pegada. Además se ha mantenido bien suelto y hace el trabajo de fuerza sin problemas. Todo está en el plan de trabajo que hemos diseñado y en este momento puede hacer las 130 libras sin problemas. Claro que tendríamos que trabajarlo con un poco más de limitaciones en la comida. Ser más supervisado diría yo. Pero (pelear en 130 o 135 un título mundial) es una decisión que no hemos tomado todavía. Aún faltan ocho o nueve meses, y también habría que ver las posibilidades que se presenten en cualquiera de esos pesos”, añadió.

En el 2015, Verdejo compiló un total de tres victorias y vio detenida su carrera por espacio de seis meses tras ser sometido a una operación en la mano izquierda luego de su triunfo sobre Iván ‘Bam Bam’ Nájera en el mes de junio.

Regresó a los ensogados el pasado 11 de diciembre en Puerto Rico, para vencer al brasileño Josenilson Dos Santos por nocáut técnico en el segundo asalto.

Verdejo está sexto en el ranking de la OMB; octavo en la FIB; segundo en la AMB y décimocuarto en el CMB. El boricua es una de las principales figuras del joven establo de la empresa Top Rank en donde también se destacan el californiano José Ramírez y el sonorense Oscar Valdéz.

SAN JUAN, PR– Por segundo año consecutivo, la Organización Mundial de Boxeo y su Presidente Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcárcel, en unión al Campeón Latino ligero de la OMB, Félix ‘El Diamante’ Verdejo llevaron alegría a los niños y niñas de la comunidad del desaparecido Residencial Las Gladiolas, obsequiándoles bicicletas, juguetes y equipo deportivo. Esto, como parte de su exitoso programa mundial “WBO Kids Drug Free”.  

“Es un compromiso que Félix (Verdejo) tiene con su comunidad y es un momento de alegría que él quiere compartir con su gente”, dijo el Lcdo. Valcárcel. “Nosotros estamos apoyando a nuestro Campeón Latino durante esta semana de los Tres Reyes Magos, junto al héroe de la comunidad, Félix Verdejo”.  

La actividad, que contó con la presencia de decenas de niños de la comunidad de Las Gladiolas, fue amenizada por Francisco Valcárcel y Félix Verdejo. “Estoy muy agradecido con Dios y con la OMB por permitirnos llevar estos regalos a los niños de mi comunidad”, indicó ‘El Diamante’ Verdejo. “Esto no es solo venir y entregar regalos, esto va más allá. Necesitamos que estos niños hagan caso a lo que dicen sus padre y dejarse guiar por el camino correcto. Todo esto con el fin de ser un ciudadano de bien en el futuro”.  

Entretanto, Ricky Márquez manifestó que, “somos facilitadores y estamos muy contentos con la iniciativa de Félix (Verdejo), junto al compromiso de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo por esta gran aportación como parte del programa ‘Niñez libre de Drogas’. Félix es un muchacho puertorriqueño que reúne las cualidades que todo padre desearía tengan sus hijo. Un joven responsable, disciplinado, humilde y cariñoso. El que lo vean como un modelo a seguir es una responsabilidad muy grande y sé que continuará por ese camino”.  

La OMB, los boxeadores y los amigos del boxeo compartieron en un ambiente de fiesta junto a los niños, otorgando varias bicicletas, juegos de mesa, juguetes, artículos deportivos y artículos escolares.  

Mientras, el Campeón Mundial junior ligero de la OMB, Román ‘Rocky’ Martínez, mencionó que, “esto es algo muy bonito que hace la Organización Mundial de Boxeo con los niños y jóvenes más necesitados. El deporte salva a la juventud del vicio y de las calles. Debemos seguir llevando el mensaje y seguir apoyando la obra de la OMB”.  

En la actividad dijeron presente los ex campeones mundiales Alfredo ‘El Salsero’ Escalera y José ‘Carita’ López, los prospectos Jean Carlos ‘Lobo’ Torres y Daniel Alicea, la boxeadora aficionada y Medallista de Oro Kiria Tapia, los jueces César Ramos, Luis Ruiz, Nelson Vázquez, Idalia Parra y Hernando Steidel, los árbitro Roberto Ramírez y Melva Santos.   

En adición a Valcárcel, por parte de la OMB estuvieron en la actividad el Secretario General Lcdo. José Izquierdo, el Tesorero Adolfo Flores Monge, el Presidente del Comité de Quejas y Agravios Lcdo. Alberto Rodríguez y el árbitro José H. Rivera.

The boxing gem of Puerto Rico, undefeated #3 world-rated lightweight contender Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo will be celebrating his upcoming HBO Boxing debut by pressing the flesh and throwing some leather for his fans in New York. He will make a two-hour special appearance at The Bronx Cultural Arts Festival (152nd Street, between Jackson and Union Avenues), tomorrow (Saturday, May 30), beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Verdejo will be taking the stage to answer questions followed by a meet & greet session where fans can get his autograph or pose for photos with him. He will end his day at the Festival with an hour-long public workout. “Last year the fans in New York made me feel like I was right at home with all the support and affection I received from them at the Bronx Festival,” said Verdejo. “I’m very happy to go back and share a good time with all my boricuas in New York.”

After a successful tour of fights along the east coast of the United States, “El Diamante” returns home for the first title bout of his professional career. Fully recovered from the injury on his left hand, rising Puerto Rican star Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo will battle for a World Boxing Organization (WBO) regional title on an April 25 card that will take place at the Mario “Quijote” Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo.

“For me there is nothing better than representing Puerto Rico, honoring my flag and bringing joy to my Island. I’m more than happy and thankful with Top Rank for the opportunity of fighting for a title in front of my people,” said the young prospect that is considered by many as ‘The Next Big Thing’ in Puerto Rican boxing. “I am very grateful with the fans on the Island for the unconditional support they have always given me and that’s why I wanted to give them my first title fight,” said the sensational boxer that was selected by ESPN.com as “Prospect of the Year”.

In what will be his first in-ring appearance of 2015 and his first fight in Puerto Rico since August of 2014, Verdejo, who is undefeated with a record of 16-0 and 12 knockouts, will battle for a WBO regional title against Mexico’s Marco Antonio “El Kua Kua” Lopez (24-5, 15 KO’s) in a 10-round duel in the lightweight division on the main the main event of the “Solo Boxeo Tecate” card that will take place on April 25 card at the Mario “Quijote” Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo.

“Puerto Rico’s favorite son returns to his Island and his fans on April 25 for his 2015 debut and the first title fight of his promising career.
