Six years after returning from the Olympics without a medal following a disputed quarterfinal loss in Beijing, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade is 20-0 as a professional and the World Boxing Organization junior middleweight champion.
To some, that might seem a rapid ascent.
But if the 26-year-old southpaw has his way, you ain’t seen nothing yet.
While his first title defense against WBO top-rated mandatory challenger Brian “The Lion” Rose (25-1, 7KOs) is scheduled for June 14 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on HBO, Andrade has bigger aspirations – much bigger aspirations.
His eyes, not to mention his “mind, body and soul,” are on the prize, which is none other than to face one of the sports’ all-time greats, 37-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr., the nine-time, five-division world champion who beat Marcos Maidana on Saturday night in a majority decision for the 46th victory in his career that is without a blemish.
As soon as the fight was finished there were those calling for a rematch, but if Andrade has his way he’ll be next to step into the ring against Mayweather, who earned $32 million for his latest victory.
“I’m just ready to get in there, whup the lion (Rose) and tame him; he’s going to be my little cub and I’m going for the big shot,” Andrade said. “I do want Mayweather. There’s nobody out there for me other than him.”
First, however, Andrade, must beat Rose. To do that, Andrade said he’s working hard in training camp, which for the past week has been in Jacksonville, where he came to see his massage therapist, Lori-Ann Gallant-Heilboran, whom he first worked with during the 2008 Olympics. Along with working with her, Andrade has been working out both in town as well as aboard Camp Lejeune.
“We’re just bracing ourselves for whatever we have to do on fight night. That brought us up here,” Andrade said during an interview at The Daily News office. “We’re doing everything we need to do.”
Andrade, who was born in Providence, R.I., and now lives in Atlanta, won the WBO title in November, claiming a 12-round, split-decision over 2004 U.S. Olympian Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan (33-1-1, 21 KOs) on Nov. 11.
Andrade said Martirosyan “kind of ran the whole night,” and some observers questioned the judge who scored the bout for Martirosyan. Nonetheless, Andrade won the title and now faces Rose as the co-main event at the 18,103-seat Barclays Center.
“Winning the title is just the beginning, the first part of being a superstar or being one of the greats,” Andrade said. “Anybody can win on any given night a title. It’s about what you’re going to do afterwards, if you can hold onto it for longevity, and that’s what I plan on doing. We’re working extremely hard and smarter and doing everything we need to do to overcome whatever comes our way.”
Starting with Rose, a bout Andrade predicted won’t go the distance. Then, he hopes and dreams, it’s on to Mayweather.
“When I win June 14th…, I would call Mayweather out. But I can’t rely on that guy. He pretty much is self-made and picks his opponent and is going to go whatever’s going to generate the most income. Can I blame him for that? No. He’s already did everything in the sport he needed to do. But if he wants to go against somebody that’s undefeated, going to give him an arduous time in that ring, that’s me,” Andrade said.
“I’m ready if he wants to do it. If not, all I can do, and all I told my supporters and my believers and myself, is I will carry the torch when his time is up.”
Mayweather has three fights left on a lucrative six-fight contract, which leaves him room to fight Andrade – if he decides to. Does Andrade believe that one night he’ll slip through the ropes to take on Mayweather?
“It’s hard to tell. Can it happen? Maybe. It’s 50-50 chance. It’s up in the air,” he said. “I’m undefeated with a belt. There’s nobody else in the 154 weight class that’s undefeated, that’s long, that’s slick and that will give him a difficult time, and people want to see it. I know I haven’t been fighting a long time like him. … But now that I’m the WBO (champ) the light’s starting to come toward my way I can be able to call out top guys now. It’s up to them to take the fight.”
And make no mistake about it, if he beats Rose next month, Andrade will stand up on HBO and proclaim he wants Mayweather.
“I will be shouting him out,” he said. “I don’t see anybody else in the 154 division other than me to get in the ring with him, but there are fighters at 147 he can fight also. It’s on him. He can do whatever he wants to do. My job is to keep on winning, give the fans what they want so they can keep shouting my name. If it doesn’t happen, I’m going to be the one that carries that torch and gives excitement and be the next greatness of boxing.”

ATLANTA – Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (20-0, 13 KOs) is shooting for the stars, better make that, The Star.
Not only does Andrade plan to succeed Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. as boxing’s pound-for-pound champion and biggest draw, the slick southpaw hopes to fight Mayweather prior to “Money” closing his boxing bank, so to speak.
Andrade, a native of Providence who now lives in Atlanta, defeated previously unbeaten 2004 U.S. Olympian Vanes “Nightmare” Martirosyan (33-1-1, 21 KOs) by 12-round decision for the vacant WBO title last November on HBO. The 25-year-old is now required to make his first title defense, likely in April according to Andrade, against WBO No. 1-rated mandatory challenger Brian “The Lion” Rose (25-1-1, 7 KOs).
The 36-year-old Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) will face either Amir Khan or Marcus Maidana on May 3 in Las Vegas on Showtime PPV. The nine-time, five-division world champion Mayweather is the reigning WBC and WBA Super junior middleweight title holder.
“I’m getting ready to take over boxing after Mayweather retires,” Andrade said. “I want to match my natural, God-given skills against his before he hangs up his gloves for good. Let’s unify the titles, Floyd. We can do it here in Atlanta, Las Vegas or New York. You pick the place, just don’t leave me hanging and retire without fighting me. This is my time!”
Mayweather announced that he will fight only four more times, including May 3, and then retire next year from the ring as a boxer. Andrade needs to quickly position himself as a viable opponent and rising star in order to be seriously considered as one of only three more Mayweather opponents. A match-up between the two could be like the passing of the torch, assuming Andrade continues to develop in the ring and marketable product.
Andrade has been described by some as a younger, taller (by 5 inches), southpaw version of Mayweather because of their similar styles and tremendous boxing skills. Their similarities don’t end there, however. They are both African-Americans who flash endearing smiles, in addition to being former US Olympians (Mayweather – 1996 Olympic bronze medalist, Andrade – 2008), multiple National Golden Gloves champions (Mayweather 1993, 1994 & 1996, Andrade 2006 & 2007), and two of the few undefeated professional prizefighters. Andrade was also the 2007 World Championships gold medalist.

After 18 years honing your craft, countless hours spent in the gym, and a childhood filled with sacrifice explain to your fans how it felt to be crowned world champion when you defeated Vanes Martirosyan at the end of 2013?
I knew when I was young that my sacrifice would pay off in the long run. I knew that if I worked not only hard but smart that I would be where I am today as world champion.But my dreams and goals go much farther than this. Winning my first title in the pro’s back in November was a great feeling. There are no words to explain what I felt in my heart. It was very special for me to do it with the team I put together and my father as head trainer, the man Paul Andrade.
Why did you decide to leave Virgil Hunter and rehire your father Paul Andrade as head trainer? Also what makes Poppa Bear such a great trainer?
Training with Virgil hunter was an experience to seek and learn what’s really the best for me. And what I found out is there is no one better for me than the one who raised me from an infant in this game. He taught me the art of boxing and also how to be a man. There is no trainer better for me than the Million Dollar man, the Silver haired professor of pugilism, Paul Andrade.
How do you feel about your opponent Brian Rose? And what do you feel he will bring to the table when challenges you for your WBO 154 LB strap?
I expect him to train hard and come into this fight in great shape so we can put on a great show for the fans. And trust me it is definetely going to be a shut out. The WBO is mines and I want the rest of the title also. I want to unify the division and be the undisputed champion. I know that’s me, I just need to opportunity to prove it.
How have things changed for you since becoming a world champion?
Nothing too crazy, it’s just a constant reminder that I can accomplish anything I want in life. But to answer the question I will say it moved me up a few “levels”.
What do you like your new residency of Atlanta, GA?
Haha, good question. The A is for the A team. We are here for the #Takeover and we are here to stay. I am new to the City but I can feel the love and support already.
How have you given back to your community since starting your pro boxing career back in 2008?
I have done many things to give back to my community. I have went and spoke to children in schools, writing letters to kids at the training center for delinquent children. I have volunteered some time teaching boxing at after school programs that my brother organized. But the biggest thing I have done to give back to my community is inspire them and show them that dreams do come true if you work hard and smart and keep God first.
What do you believe it will take(on your part and others) to see yourself at the top of the pound4pound list?
Its gon take my whole team to work harder and smarter. Work! Work! Work! Harder and smarter!
Which active boxers today inspire you to pursue greatness?
The best fighter today is Floyd Mayweather. I know I can get to his point and beyond.
How do you feel about the purse bid repeatedly being postponed prolonging your return to the ring?
I feel all types of ways about it. I am hungry and I want to get back in there as soon as possible and show the people that I am that guy for real. I want all the fights the fans want. I want to fight and beat the best. But at the end of the day what I have learned is cats really want some big $$$$$$ to get in there with me.
What are you plans and some of the things you are working on outside of the boxing ring?

Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade born February 26, 1988 in Providence, Rhode Island is a professional boxer from the United States. He won the 2007 world championships as an amateur, then made his professional debut on October 23, 2008. Demetrius represented the United States in the 2008 Olympics. He is trained by David Keefe and his father, Paul Andrade.
A Providence native of Cape Verdean descent, southpaw Andrade began boxing in 1994 at the age of 6. His nickname is “Boo Boo” and he currently competes in the Junior Middleweight division.
Andrade won the United States Amateur Boxing Championship in 2005, and repeated it in 2006 when he also won the National Golden Gloves. He again won the National Golden Gloves in 2007, but did not compete in the U.S. Amateurs that year due to injury.
Andrade initially struggled at the international level, losing to Eastern European opponents at the World Cup in 2005 and 2006. However, he won the silver medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, losing controversially in the gold medal match to Brazilian hometown favorite Pedro Lima by a narrow 7-6 margin.
He won Gold at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships, where he beat Kakhaber Zhvania, Dmitrijs Sostaks, 2005 silver medalist Magomed Nurutdinov, future champion Jack Culcay-Keth, Adem Kılıçcı in the semifinal round, and then Non Boonjumnong of Thailand in the finals, a match in which Andrade inflicted a standing eight count upon Boonjumnong and was leading by a score of 11-3 in the second round when Boonjumnong retired with an injury to his right arm.
At the Olympic trials he defeated hard-punching Keith Thurman 27:13
At the Olympics he beat Kakhaber Zhvania and the highly regarded Russian Andrey Balanov14:3 but was shocked by Korean veteran Kim Jung-Joo 9:11
Professional career
Following the disappointment of not gaining a medal at the Olympics Andrade then turned professional and had his first pro fight in October 2008, which he won at Northern Quest Casino, Airway Heights, Washington beating Patrick Cape by second round knockout. He went on to win a TKO over Eric Marriott before making his Friday Night Fights debut against Tom Joseph on March 6 with a 1st round TKO victory then only 2 weeks later a second round KO win against Arnulfo Javier Romero. On June 19, 2009 he won the unanimous decision against Tony Hirsch. And another KO against Chad Greenleaf in the second round. He is also a member of Team Fight to Walk, which supports America’s first clinical stem cell trial, along with other notable fighters such as Boyd Melson, Shawn Estrada, Steve Cunningham, Denis Douglin and Deandre Latimore

Brian Rose came through a gruelling contest to gain a split decision over Argentina’s Javier Maciel in their WBO light-middleweight eliminator in Sheffield.
It was a fight of contrasting styles with the wild Maciel providing most of the aggression, but Rose offering much the more accurate and considered work despite being on the back foot for long spells.
In the end he was given the nod with Maciel getting a 115-113 verdict from one judge, but the Englishman was awarded it 117-111 by another and then 116-113 on the third and final card.
It was Maciel who was favourite with the bookmakers going into the bout, but Rose put down an early marker as he shaded the first behind some good work with his jab.
Maciel was much more aggressive in the second and was soon throwing big shots with increasing regularity forcing his rival to cover up. Indeed, Rose was doing most of his work on the back foot and trying to make his opponent miss.
Maciel started the fourth by landing with a crunching upper-cut, but Rose absorbed it well and continued to pop accurate if not powerful shots back to ensure he remained well in contention.
The Argentine finished the fifth with another barrage of shots and even raised his hand aloft as he made his way back to his stool. But, despite a nasty cut on the bridge of his nose, Rose’s spirit was by no means broken and he battled on gamely.
The eighth proved something of a turning point. Maciel launched a sustained and frenzied attack on his opponent and looked to have hurt his man having backed Rose up on the ropes.
But the Englishman took the South American’s best shots and then finished the round much the stronger and, by the time the bell sounded, Maciel’s barrage looked to have taken more out of him than his rival.
“You still haven’t seen the best of me, as I go up in levels the better I get. I’m happy with that performance, I’m more than happy. I’m over the moon.”

It was Rose stalking his man in the ninth and he would go on to look the fresher over the course of the next couple of rounds.
The 11th proved to be almost an action-replay of the eighth as Maciel again hurt his man and unloaded relentlessly only to then be pegged back a defiant Rose.
The final round saw both men struggling wearily to have the final say, but despite Maciel’s best efforts it was the accuracy of Rose which prevailed in the eyes of the judges.
The victory earns Rose a crack at the winner of the fight between Vanes Martirosyan and Dmetrius Andrade who meet next month for the vacant WBO light-middleweight title in Texas.
A delighted Rose told Sky Sports afterwards: “I’m usually a pretty cool character, but I wasn’t cool when I got that decision – I burst into tears. I found it really hard at times – there were times when I had to dig deep. I’ve never had to do that before
“You still haven’t seen the best of me, as I go up in levels the better I get. I’m happy with that performance, I’m more than happy. I’m over the moon.
“I was a bit unsure, I thought I’d done enough, I thought I was up by three or four rounds.
Rose’s promoter Eddie Hearn added: “I thought that was a great performance. Maciel was the favourite going into the fight. I thought it was close, but he showed the heart of a lion.”

Así, tras lo ordenado por la OMB, Andrade se medirá a Martirosyan, actual N° 1 del ranking mundial superwelter OMB, en disputa de la corona, con la obligación luego de medirse a Baysangurov.
“Estoy mirando con ansias esta pelea. Abel Sanchez, the trainer of ex-WBO light middleweight champion, Zaurbek Baysangurov (28-1, 20 KOs), revealed the reasons behind his protégé’s recent withdrawal from the fight with a mandatory challenger Demetrius Andrade, scheduled for July 6 in Kiev, to Sportbox.ru .
“Zaurbek was training very hard, trying to get in shape. On the Wednesday of that week, we had an open workout, which included an eight-round sparring session, and Zaurbek felt pain in his back afterwards. On Thursday we did a bit of jogging, but his condition worsened. I think it was an old injury he had received in the past. Then we had a light training session and another period of jogging. His back gave up; he was in sharp pain, so he had to visit a doctor”.
“Zaurbek had been training so hard for the fight, but this cancellation will be a blessing after all. He would have been unable to complete his task against Andrade without proper ring movement. I guess he could be back in five or six months from this point”.
Baysangurov’s WBO title was declared vacant, with undefeated former US Olympians Demetrius Andrade (2008) and Vanes Martirosyan (2004) being the frontrunners for the vacated belt. The winner of this bout will have to take on Baysangurov right after that.

As agreed on purse bid, If any fighter is injured, he’ll be replaced with first available contender and injured fighter will be kept as #1 on the rankings. If the Champion is injured, he will be #1. The winner must face mandatory challenger within 180 days from the date of the bout If this happens, promoters must renegotiate contract.
World Boxing Organization (WBO) president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel announced today the referee and judges who will work the July 6 world title fight between WBO light middleweight champion Zaurbek Baysangurov (28-1, 20 KOs) and undefeated official challenger Demetrius Andrade (19-0, 13 KOs) to be held at the Sport Palace in Kiev, Ukraine in a K2 Promotions presentation. The referee will be Luis Pabon from Puerto Rico, the judges for the Baysangurov-Andrade bout will be Ingo Barrabas (Germany), Thomas Miller (USA) and Hernando Steidel (Puerto Rico). Supervisor will be Igor Mazurov from Russia who is a member of the WBO Executive Committee and the president of the Federation of Professional Boxing of Russia.

NEW YORK (December 6, 2012) Star Boxing and Banner Promotions present an evening of world-class professional boxing on ShoBox: The New Generation, Friday, January 25, 2013 at The Paramount in Huntington, N.Y. (SHOWTIME, 10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).
Headlining the event will be a sensational 10-round junior middleweight showdown between world ranked and undefeated Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (18-0-0, 13KOs) of Providence, R.I. and former world title challenger Freddy “EL Riel” Hernandez (30-3-0, 20 KOs) of Mexico City, Mexico for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Inter-Continental Title.
Ranked #3 by the IBF, #3 by the WBO and #7 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), the 24-year-old southpaw Andrade is an amateur sensation with extensive international experience. He was considered the cream of the 2008 United States Olympic Team advancing to the quarterfinal round. He also won the Gold Medal in the 2007 World Championships, the first American do so since 1999.
Andrade’s 2012 campaign demonstrated his brutal knock out power with devastating early knockout wins over Angel Hernandez (KO in Round 2),Rudy Cisneros (KO in Round 1), , and Alexis Hloros (TKO in Round 2)..
However, Hernandez is certainly the biggest challenge of Andrade’s career. The hard-hitting Hernandez has faced numerous former world champions and contenders over his 11-year career and holds recent wins over Luis Collazo, Mike Anchondo and DeMarcus Corley.
On October 15, 2011, Hernandez dominated former world champion Collazo towards a ten round unanimous decision win. Most recently he challenged top contender Erislandy Lara on June 30, coming up short in a hotly contested 10-round bout in Indio, CA.

WBO North American Boxing Organization (NABO) Executive Director, Mark Reels, has announced that tonight’s bout between Demetrius Andrade vs. Angel Hernandez will not be for the vacant NABO Jr. Middleweight title. Andrade’s original foe, Derek Ennis, backed out Monday; for which the bout was scheduled to be for the vacant NABO Jr. Middleweight title. Since Ennis dropped our of the bout, it (Andrade’s fight) will no longer be for the NABO Jr. Middleweight title.
BRONX, NY (February 7, 2012) – Veteran boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia had a brief respite this past Sunday, one day after promoting his second show in two weeks and a few days prior to his Star Boxing-presented ESPN Friday Night Fights show this week, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
TA lifelong New York sports fan, Joe eagerly watched the Super Bowl with his two sons, Joseph (15) and Andrew (10), in the Bronx at a relative’s home. Joe and Joseph were thrilled that their New York Giants won, but Andrew was heartbroken his New England Patriots lost.
For some unknown reason, Andrew is a Pats fan who showed the heart of a fighter last Friday, when he entered his classroom in Westchester — filled with Giants fans — wearing a Tom Brady jersey and Patriots hat along with #12 (Brady’s number) painted on one side of his face, Patriots on the other.

“He didn’t care,” Joe said about his son being the lone dissenter among his classmates. “I was torn watching the game because one son was rooting for the Giants, the other for the Patriots. I was born and raised in the Bronx, a diehard New York sports fan. Joseph is the same as his parents (Giants, Yankees, etc.). Andrew, though, is a rebel.
“Andrew was ecstatic when the Patriots were leading. He was rubbing it in, even doing a ‘Cruz salsa dance’ after the Pats scored a touchdown. A little depressed after the game, Andrew bounced right back saying, ‘Wait until next year.’ Believe it or not, I honestly don’t know why, but Andrew is a Red Sox fan, too.”
Friday night’s fights this week should be easier for Joe to watch because both of his sons will be supporting two of Star Boxing’s most promising boxers, unbeaten 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, and undefeated junior welterweight prospect Raymond “Tito” Serrano.

Undefeated 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (15-0, 10 KOs) believes his February 10 main-event fight against Derek “Pooh” Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs) for the vacant NABO junior middleweight title, is a continuation of a well designed plan, eventually landing him a world title fight later this year or in early 2013.
Andrade believes he has been unfairly tabbed a safety-first fighter. “Sometimes, it’s funny to me that, when I win by a decision, some people get mad because I didn’t knockout my opponent,” Andrade explained. “But they still get mad when I win by knockout. Whenever I fight, I bring a different look and nobody can say I don’t. I beat (Grady) Brewer with my jab and I went to (Saul) Duran’s body with power punches until he quit. Each and every fight, I’m better, stronger – stepping-up against better competition – and I’m still winning.”
Currently rated WBO #9, IBF #13, WBC #13, WBA #15, Andrade was a much decorated amateur who in 2007 became the first American since 1999 to capture a gold medal at the World Amateur Championships. “This fight will put me in a good position and let people know that I’m coming hard,” Andrade said. “I will be there soon (world champion) but I’m in no rush. I’ve been handled the right way. We’re following the game plan and picking the right fights. Once I get up to 20-0 or so, I’ll be ready to call out the big guys like (Canelo) Alvarez.
“I’ve improved a lot since I turned pro, mentally and physically. I’ve kept my head on straight, remained focused and have had no distractions at all – in or out of the ring. Physically, I’m in tip-top shape, able to handle whatever comes my way.”
IBF #9-rated Ennis is carrying on the rich tradition of other tough Philadelphia fighters before him such as Joey Giardello, Jeff Chandler, Bernie Briscoe and so many others from the City of Brotherly Love.
“I don’t know too much about Ennis other than his record and that he has a good style,” Demetrius remarked. “We’re looking to step-up and fight guys like him. We’re going to make this show rock. I’m going for a big win.”

Former U.S. Olympian Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade of Providence gets his first crack at boxing hardware Feb. 10 when he takes on Philadelphian Derek “Pooh” Ennis for the vacant North American Boxing Organization (NABO) junior middleweight title at the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Conn.
The fight will be the main event on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights series.
Since we last wrote about Andrade after a lackluster win last August over Grady Brewer, Andrade showed a lot more aggressiveness in an impressive third-round TKO over former world title challenger Saul Duran and has climbed into the top 15 rankings of all four major boxing organizations.
“This is going to be a breakout year for Demetrius,” said Joe DeGuardia, president of Star Boxing, which co-promotes Andrade with Banner Promotions. “Ennis is a tough Philadelphia fighter who figures to give Demetrius the toughest test of his young pro career.”
The undefeated Andrade (15-0, 11 KOs), who rose from the Southern New England Golden Gloves Tournament in Fall River to a world amateur boxing championship and a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, is curently ranked ninth in the junior middleweight division by the WBO, 11th by the IBF, 13th by the WBC and 15th by the WBA.
Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs) is a former USBA champion who is ranked ninth by the IBF. He won the vacant USBA title in 2009 against former world title challenger Ermosele Albert.
