Ruben Villa to take on Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO World Featherweight Title on Friday, October 9th

PHILADELPHIA, PA/ / ORANGE, CA. (Sept. 21, 2020) – On Friday night, October 9th, undefeated WBO number-two ranked featherweight contender Ruben Villa (18-0, 5 KOs) gets his much-deserved world title shot when he takes on former WBO super bantamweight world champion, and WBO number-one ranked contender, Emanuel Navarrete (32-1, 28 KOs), in a battle for the WBO World Featherweight title.

Navarrete is undefeated in the last eight-years, which spans 27 fights.

The fight will take place at “The Bubble” inside the MGM Grand Conference Center, and will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.

Jessica McCaskill will defend her undisputed WBO World Welterweight title against Cecilia Brækhus in early 2021 after former champion Brækhus activated the rematch clause.

McCaskill ripped the titles from Brækhus in a tightly fought contest on the streets of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma in August as Matchroom returned to action in the US, with one judge unable to split the pair but challenger McCaskill getting the nod on the other cards, 97-94 and 97-93.

The win meant that McCaskill (9-2 3 KOs) became a two-weight World champion in just her 11th pro outing, and was another chapter of a phenomenal rise for the Chicago ace, from traveling to London, England in her seventh pro fight in December 2017 and giving Lightweight champion and Irish sensation Katie Taylor a run for her money in McCaskill’s first World title fight, before picking up the WBA World Super-Lightweight title in her next fight on home turf against Erica Farias in October 2018 and then unifying the 140lbs division against Anahi Sanchez in May 2019.

Brækhus (36-1 9 KOs) suffered her first career defeat in Tulsa and that loss prevented the Norwegian from making history by breaking Joe Louis’ 72 year record of 25 consecutive World title defenses, but ‘The First Lady’ of boxing was denied by the Chicagoan – and hinted at retirement in her post-fight interview. Now both former champion and defending ruler are ready to lock horns once again, with an early 2021 date and venue to be announced later in the year.

“That’s the fastest retirement I’ve ever seen in boxing history – she’s back!” said McCaskill. “We knew she would be back and that it would only be a matter of time. Usually those types of conversations straight after a fight to direct the audience’s eyes away from the loss. In this sport, so many people have said that they are retired and then come back to have fights.

“I gave her the belts back and just wanted to be the one to do that. There’s never been any bad blood, I could have had my team send the belts back but there was no reason not to give the belts back myself so we went over to her room and she was on the phone to her family, when she got off the phone, she made comments to passing the torch and with her being beaten for the first time I think she expects someone else to carry on her legacy and I have my own legacy to fulfill and that’s where my focus is.

“Tulsa is over with and now I have to get up for the rematch which is part of being professional and part of the gameplay. The only rematch I’ve had in my pro career was with Erica Farias so it’s part of it and you cannot expect anything to motivate, you can’t expect your team to hype you up for a workout, what if they are not there that day? You can’t expect the fans to get you hyped for the fight because what if there are no fans? I am a very mentally strong person, I can control how to get from point a to point b so I will be ready for it.”

“It was the weakest performance in my whole career,” said Brækhus. “I still feel I won, or could have got a draw, and when I thought about that, I knew I could beat her in a rematch. I didn’t want to go out with a career-worst performance either, I definitely owe that to my fans. If this was a fight where I lost to a better fighter, had been in my best shape and had given it my all, then fine, I could retire, but that was not the case here.

“She gave her everything in the ring and I wanted to give her props for that, I knew what I was going through and what I was struggling with, for everyone this was just a tough time. But we need to meet again under different circumstances.

“It’s hard to explain exactly how I was in the ring that night for everyone that has watched my other fights and been following me for a while they saw that something was very wrong. So for me to come back after getting some time in Norway with my friends and family, spending time on my other projects and gaining my strength back and going back to training camp, I don’t need to do anything different to get the win.

“I learnt how good I am! I was in bad shape and I still feel like I beat a great fighter like Jessica, so my self-esteem is very high right now. A win or a draw would be OK but I also understand the emotional aspect of giving Jessica the win because she fought her heart out, if you were a judge and saw this I can understand that.

“We never underestimated Jessica at all, these are unprecedented times and there’s no blueprint here, I didn’t have anyone that I could call and ask ‘what do I do in this situation?’ This had never happened before so I just had to try my luck, there’s no-one to blame it just didn’t work out for us.

“The situation with no crowd didn’t bother me so much, it’s good in a way because it’s completely neutral! But it would be good to have fans for the rematch, it gives us more energy and a little extra, we don’t want three American judges next time that’s for sure! I think if it’s in America I will have to get the KO for sure, after meeting Jessica in the ring, I was never near getting KO’d so I’m definitely not worried about that.”

Jessica McCaskill put the boxing world on notice as she claimed the undisputed crown from Cecilia Brækhus in a thrilling upset from the streets of downtown Tulsa and live on DAZN. At stake for Brækhus was shattering boxing’s most prestigious record – 25 consecutive world title defenses – one that she now holds with heavyweight legend Joe Louis.

The former unified super lightweight champion McCaskill (9-2, 3 KOs) edged out a majority decision victory over Brækhus (36-1, 9 KOs) in one of the biggest upsets in boxing this year. Ramirez-Postol, Take 3! The long-awaited showdown between Unified WBO Junior Welterweight world champion Jose Ramirez and former world champion and challenger Viktor “The Iceman” Postol will take place at the MGM Grand Conference Center Saturday, Aug. 29.

Ramirez and Postol were set to fight February 2 in China and May 9 in Fresno, Calif., but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both were subsequently canceled. This time, they will enter the “Bubble.

In the 10-round junior welterweight co-feature, unbeaten contender Arnold Barboza Jr., from South El Monte, Calif., will fight Canadian veteran Tony “Lightning” Luis in his toughest test to date. Ramirez-Postol and Barboza-Luis will stream live on ESPN+ beginning at 10 p.m ET, with undercard action to stream live at 7:30 p.m. ET.

“Jose has stayed in the gym with his great trainer, Robert Garcia, throughout the pandemic,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “I have no doubt we will see the best version of Jose Ramirez, a wonderful young man and one of the world’s best fighters. He will need to be on his game because Postol is a worthy contender who has proven himself at the world-class level.”

Ramirez (25-0, 17 KOs) enters the fight coming off a career-high 13-month layoff. Last July, he knocked out Maurice Hooker to unify the WBC and WBO titles and stake his claim as the world’s best 140-pounder. Since winning the vacant WBC title against Amir Imam in March 2018, Ramirez defeated the previously undefeated Antonio Orozco, top contender Jose Zepeda and Hooker. The Orozco and Zepeda title defenses took place in front of more than 10,000 fans at Fresno’s Save Mart Center, a short drive from his hometown of Avenal.

During the early stages of the pandemic, Ramirez teamed up with Central Valley community leaders to assist the region’s agricultural workers. With Ramirez leading the way, they donated essential supplies and more than 1,000 wellness boxes, which included N95 masks, paper towels, toilet paper, rice, masa, beans and hand sanitizer. Ramirez now turns his focus to Postol (31-2, 12 KOs), a former WBC world champion whose only two losses have come against current IBF/WBA junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor and pound-for-pound king Terence Crawford. Postol has won two bouts since the Taylor defeat, most recently topping Mohamed Mimoune via decision last April in Las Vegas.

“I’m excited to finally be back. It’s always an honor stepping into the ring, fighting a guy like Postol and defending my belts,” Ramirez said. “God knows that my goal is to become the undisputed champion, and this gets me one step closer to my goal.”

Postol said, “I’m just looking forward to fighting. I’m coming to win those world titles. I have been training since this fight was first announced, so I’m focused and ready to go.”

Barboza Jr. (23-0, 10 KOs) makes his 2020 debut following a 2019 campaign that saw him climb the world rankings with three statement-making wins. He knocked out former world champion Mike Alvarado on the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Anthony Crolla undercard at Staples Center, stopped veteran Ricky Sismundo in four rounds at Banc of California Stadium, and scored a body shot knockout over William Silva last November in Las Vegas. Barboza is currently ranked eighth by the WBC and 10th by the WBO at 140 pounds.

“Tony Luis is as tough as they come. He won’t lay down for me. He sees this as a big opportunity, and I can’t let him take it,” Barboza said. “To be honest, the whole no fans thing, I’m more curious than anything. I’ve fought in front of limited fans deep on undercards before. Once you’re in the ring, there’s no difference. I am happy to be part of this ‘Bubble’ experience because it will go down in history.”

Luis (29-3, 10 KOs), from Cornwall, Canada, is a volume puncher with a knack for upsetting undefeated fighters. Since 2014, he has taken the ‘0’ from three then-unbeaten prospects, including a nationally televised decision over Karl Dargan in January 2015. Luis has won 10 consecutive fights since an April 2015 decision loss to Derry Matthews for an interim lightweight world title in Matthews’ hometown of Liverpool, England.

On Wednesday evening, it was announced previous main event fighter Stephen Fulton Jr. tested positive for COVID-19 and was removed from the 122-pound title fight versus Angelo Leo. Tramaine Williams will now step in to face fellow unbeaten Leo for the vacant WBO Jr. Featherweight World Championship in the main event. Ra’eese Aleem, who was previously scheduled to face Williams, will instead face 122-pound contender Marcus Bates in a rematch of their 2018 bout that saw Aleem walk away with a unanimous decision victory.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast also features a light heavyweight rematch between Houston’s Joe George and Argentina’s Marcos Escudero that opens the telecast. The card is presented by Premier Boxing Champions and promoted by TGB and Mayweather Promotions in association with Kings Promotions. We have worked very hard to minimize the risk but we know we can’t eliminate the risk altogether. In some sense, this was inevitable. We were going to get some positive tests and we worked hard to be prepared. One of the things that we did notice in observing other combat sports and other sports generally, was that there really is no way to avoid positive tests. At this point, our focus was on being prepared and having backup fighters prepared, trained, COVID-tested, so that in the event of an unfortunate positive test we would be prepared and could move forward hopefully seamlessly as we have on this card.

“I think the key for this card is storylines. Even before the changes this was a card filled with up-and-coming young boxers, promising prospects and rising stars. With the loss of Stephen Fulton Jr., that has remained the same nonetheless. We have Angelo Leo, a Mayweather Promotions prospect from Albuquerque, N.M., who is a very good young boxer and excellent body puncher looking for the opportunity at his first world title. Tramaine Williams came here expecting to be on the undercard in the co-feature and instead he has found himself with the biggest opportunity of his career. We thank the WBO for working with us and maintaining the title fight. We have now instead of the No. 1 and No. 2 contenders in the WBO, we have the No. 2 and No. 6 so no real drop-off in quality of the fight.”

The tentative date for one of boxing’s biggest fights is on the move.

The lightweight unification title fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez Jr. might now take place on Oct. 3 in Las Vegas, Top Rank president Todd duBoef confirmed to ESPN’s Steve Kim on Wednesday night.

Recently, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum suggested Sept. 19 as a potential date for the fight, after a spring date was moved because of the coronavirus pandemic. DuBoef said “it’s still too early to determine everything” regarding the bout and that he is uncertain as to whether it will be closed to the public.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame will reopen to the public on Monday, June 29th and officially ring the bell at 11 a.m. to open the doors and begin the next round of honoring the best in the sport of boxing.

To mark the reopening, visitors will be charged the Hall of Fame’s youth rate of $8.50 all summer instead of typical admission rates of $13.50 for adults and $11.50 for seniors. Ages 6 and under are free.

The Hall will step back into the ring with new protocol in accordance with recommendations of the State of New York and public health officials. The following will be in place: Masks are required for staff and fans, safe social distancing, 25% capacity, frequent cleaning and sanitizing, hand sanitizer will be available and plexiglass shields at admission check-in.

“The Hall of Fame is excited to officially ring the bell at the Museum entrance to open the doors to fans for a walk down boxing’s memory lane,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “It’s entertaining and educational and can be enjoyed by the entire family at an affordable cost. The Hall wants to deliver a knockout punch never thrown before with everyone receiving the youth rate all summer long.”

Among the exhibits fans can see include the world famous Madison Square Garden boxing ring that Muhammad Ali and “Smokin’” Joe Frazier fought “The Fight of the Century” in that is on permanent display.

“Fans visiting the Hall of Fame have a truly unique opportunity to watch the classic 1971 battle between Ali and Frazier ringside to the actual ring they so bravely fought in,” said Brophy.

The Hall of Fame features all of the greats including Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Sugar Ray Robinson, George Foreman, Oscar de la Hoya, Mike Tyson, Bernard Hopkins and many more. They’re all in Canastota.

The Hall of Fame chronicles the history of the sport with unique and educational exhibits including fist castings, boxing robes, boxing shoes, statues and audio/visual stations highlighting classic boxing matches. The Hall of Fame Wall features photographs and biographies of all inductees.

Puerto Ricans Jeyvier Cintron and Luis “Popeye” Lebron showed part of their training for their important matches on Saturday, September 1, in the return of the series “Sabado de Campeones en Casino Metro Boxing Nights”, which will be held in the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino in San Juan, in a presentation of PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP), to be broadcast on Wapa Deportes.

The fighters held a training for the media this afternoon at the Félix Pagán Pintor Gym in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, en route to their Saturday bouts.

The two-time Olympian Cintron (7-0, 4 kos), who has just been crowned last month as WBO Youth champion at 118 pounds, will fight for the first time as a professional at 115 pounds when he faces Mexican Francisco Alonso Melendez (15-2, 13 kos) for the vacant WBO Latino title in that weight. Cintron is confident to overcome the challenge.

“I had this opportunity to fight at 115 pounds and I accepted the challenge, it’s a weight I have not done for a long time, but I like challenges, things that are difficult,” Cintron said during training with former two time world champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon. “Also, we go 10 rounds and that fills me with motivation to show what we’re made of.”

For his part, Popeye Lebron (12-0-1, 6 kos), who will defend his WBO Latino featherweight belt (126 pounds) against Chilean Robinson Laviñanza (13-4-2, 5 kos), said he is ready for the fight.

“The training has been strong, since we are classified in the WBO and we are aware of that, we have to be ready for any kind of combat, we are going to show that we can be in that ranking”, said Lebron, ranked #12 by the WBO at 126 pounds.

In other matches of the show, Henry “Moncho” Lebron (5-0, 4 kos) will face Mexican Luis Gerardo Avila (6-11-3, 4 kos) in a six rounds bout at 130 pounds, while Luis Melendez (2-0, 2 kos), from Miami, Florida, will face Elliot de Jesus (1-2) in a four rounds scheduled fight at 126 pounds.

The program will also feature several amateur boxing fights.

El encuentro sirvió para que el jerarca de la OMB ratificara a Panamá como sede de 31 Convención Anual de este organismo, programada para el 29 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, cuyo país anfitrión había sido asignada originalmente a Managua, Nicaragua, pero que debido a los conflictos sociales y políticos que enfrenta dicha nación, se cambió a Panamá.

Valcárcel dijo estar contento con la nueva sede, alegando la buena ubicación donde fluyen muchas líneas aéreas con infinidades de destino, donde a la fecha ya se han ido adelantando algunas acciones para que la convención llene las expectativas,

Adelantó que el evento se vestirá de gala con la presencia de grandes figuras del boxeo como Wladimir_Klitschko, Marco Antonio Barrera y Miguel Coto, siendo esta la segunda convención que se realiza en Panamá.

Por su parte Rivera manifestó que en el marco de tal acontecimiento, reconocidos promotores de todo el mundo traerán a sus mejores púgiles para organizar una mega cartilla, la cual ya se encuentra en sus primera fase, incluyendo, sin lugar a dudas a las de Panamá.

El excampeón mundial peleará el 9 de junio en el MGM Grand de Las Vegas.

No toda las conferencias de prensa tienen una alfombra roja. Floyd Mayweather Jr. y Manny Pacquiao la tuvieron ayer, lo que refleja la magnitud del combate que ambos están por enfrentar.

Mayweather Jr. y Pacquiao se vieron las caras el miércoles en el único frente a frente que tendrán hasta los días previos al mega pleito entre ambos el 2 de mayo en el MGM Grand de Las Vegas, Nevada.

Los campeones del peso welter, considerados como los mejores libras por libra de los últimos tiempos, se encontraron en un atestado Nokia Teather de Los Ángeles, lugar que recibió desde horas tempranas a los cerca de 500 miembros de la prensa que se congregaron para presenciar la histórica presentación.

Una enorme alfombra roja dirigió el camino de los púgiles desde la entrada del teatro hasta el escenario.

El anunciador insignia de HBO, Michael Buffer se encargó de presentar a Pacquiao, un diez veces campeón del mundo y un ocho veces reinante en divisiones diferentes.

Mientras que ‘El Clásico’, Jimmy Lennon Jr., voz principal de los eventos de Showtime, tuvo a su cargo la presentación del invicto, Mayweather.

Ambos púgiles no tardaron en posar frente a frente por cerca de un minuto desplegando una electrificante energía en el icónico recinto del Este estadounidense.

“Gracias a HBO y a Floyd, a Top Rank y a todos por hacer este combate posible. Creo que este es el combate que han estado esperando desde hace cinco años. Estamos bien contentos y trabajaremos lo más duro para éste combate”, dijo Pacquiao.

“Los haremos felices el 2 de mayo. Y lo más importante es que el nombre de Dios sea glorificado. Que la gente, sepa que es Dios, que hace que uno venga de la nada, y logre todo lo que soy hoy”, agregó el filipino que tiene marca de 57-5-2 y 38KO’s.

Fue un encuentro cordial entre ambos equipos. Las únicos que tuvieron un encuentro de ‘egos’ fueron los representantes de las televisoras, Stephen Espinoza (Showtime) y Ken Kershman (HBO), quienes dejaron en claro sus logros en las carreras de ambos peleadores.

“Ha sido un largo camino. Pero aquí estamos ahora”, dijo Mayweather Jr.

“El 2 de mayo, el combate del siglo, será entre los dos mejores peleadores. Creo que no pudimos escoger el mejor momento. Mi equipo buscará el mejor plan tal y como lo hemos hecho en todos mis combates. La acción hace las peleas, yo trabajaré hasta el límite de mis capacidades. Pero una cosa sí sé sobre cualquier deporte, cuando pierdes está en tu mente. Si pierdes una vez, o dos, es en tu mente. Desde el día uno he dicho que seré el ganador y así será”, aseguró Mayweather quien tiene foja de 47-0 y 26KO’s.

Pacquiao y Mayweather acordaron la última semana de febrero firmar el combate del que venían hablando desde el 2009. Floyd tendrá una garantía de $150 millones, mientras que Pacquiao obtendrá $100 millones.

Se espera que el choque genere más de $300 millones y que las ventas de ‘pague por ver’ superen las 3 millones.

Mayweather es campeón welter y súperwelter del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo (CMB), mientras que Pacquiao es titular de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB).

“Primero fue Alí-Frazier, luego Leonard-Durán, Leonard-Hagler. Y ahora es el momento para Mayweather-Pacquiao”, dijo el promotor Bob Arum. “Todo el mundo debe estar interesado en el combate. Senadores, presidentes, artistas, personalidades del deporte. Todo el mundo”, agregó el fundador de Top Rank.

Un total de 150 países podrán tener acceso al combate que será presentado en alianza entre las dos más grandes empresas de televisión, Showtime y HBO.

“Hubo grandes obstáculos. Pero luego de que ellos dos se encontraron, pues ahí fue que supe que el combate podría celebrarse”, comentó Stephen Espinoza, director de Shotime Sports, previo al frente a frente.

Leonard Ellerbe, representante de Mayweather Jr., dijo que los boletos del pleito comenzarán en los $1,500.00 hasta los $7,500.00.

Hace unos días el promotor Bob Arum comentó que todos ellos ya habían sido vendidos.

El campeón mundial welter del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo (WBC), el invicto estadounidense Floyd Mayweather Jr., ha comenzado a desafiar al campeón mundial welter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), el filipino Manny Pacquiao. A través de su cuenta de la red social Twitter, retó al “Pacman” para que lo enfrente el próximo 5 de mayo, noche en que sus manejadores han reservado el MGM Grand en Las Vegas, para que realice su próximo combate ante un rival por confirmar.

Si bien “Money” Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) ya cuenta con la confirmación de su siguiente aparición, mientras que Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs) había sido mencionado para regresar a la actividad el 9 o 16 de junio. Más allá de fechas, el filipino debía decidir quién sería su rival luego de la reunión que mantendrá con su promotor y titular de Top Rank, Bob Arum. El mismo Arum había señalado que sería Manny quien decidiera sobre las opciones del mexicano Juan Manuel Márquez (cuarto duelo), el puertorriqueño Miguel Cotto, o los estadounidenses Timothy Bradley y Lamont Peterson.

Pero en los últimos días, el astro filipino señaló que no tendría inconvenientes en enfrentar a Mayweather. Incluso advirtió que estaría dispuesto a realizarse las pruebas antidopaje que tanto reclama el equipo de su potencial oponente. “Si el combate no se realiza, no es por nosotros”, había remarcado. Y la respuesta de Floyd no tardó en llegar.

“Manny Pacquiao, te estoy convocando públicamente. Peleemos el 5 de mayo y démosle al mundo lo que quiere ver”, escribió Mayweather hoy en su cuenta de Twitter.

“Mi sentencia de prisión fue postergada porque la fecha (5 de mayo) está cerrada. Anímate, idiota“, agregó.

El viernes pasado, Mayweather recibió la noticia de que no irá a prisión hasta el 1º de junio, a pesar de que había sido sentenciado el 21 de diciembre a entregarse el 6 de enero, luego de que fuera condenado a seis meses de cárcel (90 días efectivo y 90 en suspenso) en conexión a una causa abierta en la que afronta cargos menores por agresión y violencia doméstica, según decidió la jueza de Paz de Las Vegas, Melissa Saragosa, en la Corte Suprema del Condado de Clark.

Saragosa señaló que dio lugar a los pedidos del abogado del boxeador, en torno a las obligaciones contractuales ya asumidas y que deben ser cumplidas. En tal sentido, el abogado del campeón, Richard Wright, había solicitado a la jueza permitir a su representado cumplir con sus obligaciones en torno al combate, enfatizando el beneficio económico hacia Las Vegas cada vez que Mayweather pelea.

El hawaiano Brian Viloria hizo una pelea ofensiva apoyado en una gran condición física, para derrotar por nocaut técnico en el octavo asalto al mexicano Giovanni Segura, y así retener el campeonato mosca de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo, en su primera defensa, este domingo en Manila, Filipinas.

La pelea concluyó cuando en un cambio de golpes, Viloria conectó durísimo gancho de izquierda a la mandíbula del mexicano, quien acusó el castigo y se fue hacia un lado, muy lastimado. En ese momento el árbitro Samuel Viruet decidió para las acciones y darle la victoria al campeón estadounidense, que dominaba el encuentro.

Segura, que subió al ring como campeón minimosca de la AMB y de la OMB, tenía el ojo derecho cerrado y monstruosamente inflamado por los golpes del hawaiano.

Giovanni presentó oposición en los primeros asaltos, pero del quinto en adelante era visible que se resentía por el castigo recibido, principalmente potentes combinaciones de izquierda y derecha al rostro. En los rounds sexto y séptimo era completo el dominio de Viloria, mientras que el guerrerense avecindado en Bell Gardens, California iba en reversa.

LA PELEA entre el bayamonés Wilfredo ‘Papito’ Vázquez y el filipino Nonito Donaire, de la que se viene hablando hace unos meses, ya tiene fecha.

El combate, por el campeonato supergallo (122 libras) de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) se celebraría el 4 de febrero en una transmisión de HBO en una sede por designar.

La cartelera sería estelarizada por una defensa del campeón mediano del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo (CMB), el mexicano Julio César Chávez, Jr., ante un rival por anunciarse luego. Y entre los lugares que se consideran para montar la cartelera, están Las Vegas y alguna ciudad en los estados de California y Texas. Ésta sería la pelea preparatoria de Chávez Jr. antes de medirse en el verano al boricua Miguel Cotto.

“Es la fecha que nos dieron y esperamos cuadrar todo eso en los próximos días. No hemos firmado nada, pero sí esa es la fecha de la que se está hablando con Chávez, Jr. como estelar”, le dijo a El Nuevo Día, Félix ‘Tutico’ Zabala, promotor de Vázquez.

“Esa fecha está bien para Papito. Él está entrenando, así que no lo va a tomar por sorpresa”, agregó Zabala desde Kissimmee, Florida donde participaba en el pesaje para la cartelera que montará hoy su empresa All Star Boxing donde reaparecerá el excampeón mundial Alex ‘El Nene’ Sánchez.

Ante Donaire, Vázquez (21-1-1 con 18 nocauts) estará buscando el cetro que perdió el 7 de mayo pasado al caer por nocaut técnico en el 12mo asalto ante Jorge ‘Travieso’ Arce. El mexicano renunció a ese cetro para bajar a las 118 libras, peso en el que se coronó el mes pasado.

Mientras que Donaire (27-1-0 con 18), ha sido campeón mundial en las 112, 115 y 118 libras. Ante Vázquez, estará debutando en la categoría supergallo.

La Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) anunció los oficiales que estarán trabajando este domingo, 11 de diciembre, en el combate titular entre el monarca mosca Brian Viloria y el ex campeón mundial junior mosca  Giovanni Segura, que se efectuará en el Yñares Sports Arena en Manila, Filipinas en una presentación de Promociones Zanfer y Saved by the Bell Promotions.

El presidente de la OMB, Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel, informó que para  la pelea por el título mosca de la OMB entre el estadounidense Viloria (29-3 y 16 nocauts), en su primera defensa, y el mexicano Segura (28-1-1 y 24 nocauts), el árbitro será Samuel Viruet de Estados Unidos.

Mientras, los jueces que trabajarán en este choque entre Viloria y Segura son Danrex Tapdasan de Filipinas, Harry Davis de Canadá y Ulysses Glenn de Estados Unidos. El supervisor de la OMB para este encuentro es Leon Panoncillo Jr.

Viloria, que anteriormente había reinado en las 108 libras, ganó el título de las 112 libras el pasado 16 de julio de 2011 cuando venció por decisión a Julio César Miranda.

Por su parte, Segura fue campeón junior mosca (108 libras) de la OMB venciendo al puertorriqueño Iván “Iron Boy” Calderón en 2010 y defendiéndolo en una ocasión ante el mismo Calderón en 2011. El azteca renunció al título luego para hacer campaña en pesos superiores.

Esta pelea entre Viloria y Segura será transmitida por “Pay Per View” y por TV Azteca.

Para explicar la vocación boxística de Diego Gabriel Chaves basta con una simple extracción de sangre y posterior análisis de ADN. El boxeo lo lleva en la sangre y su árbol genealógico lo demuestra.

Su abuelo Rudecindo fue el pionero como boxeador hasta llego a combatir en el ring del Luna Park. Él forjó como padre y como entrenador a Ismael Armando, Ariel Gabriel, Carlos Abel y al menor de todos, “La Joya” de la familia Chaves.

Ismael y Ariel fueron campeones argentinos, en las categorías welter junior y welter, respectivamente. Incluso, Ariel ganó también el cinturón latino OMB súper welter, que supo ostentar Diego antes que decidiera militar en las 147 libras.

En su niñez y adolescencia, alternaba con el fútbol, ya que llevaba 4 años en Vélez, jugando de enganche. Así que entrenaba a la mañana en Vélez y a la tarde en Caseros con el pugilismo. Sin embargo, a la hora de la elección, valió más su amor por los guantes que por la pelota.

Como amateur participó de dos mundiales, sin suerte. Ganó la medalla de bronce en los Juegos Panamericanos de Río De Janeiro 2007 y fue medalla de plata en los Juegos Odesur.

Su debut como profesional fue el 5 de julio de 2008 ante Juan José Islas, a quien noqueó en tres asaltos. Con solo 10 combates, el oriundo de San Miguel Buenos Aires consiguió su bautismo titular: Cetro latino OMB súper welter y al mismo tiempo, se abría en el camino internacional ubicándose en el puesto 14 en el ranking de la entidad.

Cuatro meses mas tarde, Chaves suma el cinturón Welter OMB Latino a su colección otra vez por la vía rápida. Actualmente, con cinco defensas del cetro latino, se posiciona, invicto, en el cuarto lugar del ranking mundial. Y el 26 de noviembre hizo gala de su poderoso gancho de izquierda para demoler en solo 3 asaltos al duro y experimentado Jorge Daniel Miranda.

Cumplió 25 años el 7 de abril, lleva 20 peleas, todas ganadas, 16 por KO. Apoyado por el club de sus amores Vélez Sarsfield; dirigido por sus tíos (a quien él suele llamar hermanos, lo que aumenta la confusión) y conducido profesionalmente por Mario Margossian, Diego está en constante crecimiento y con el mismo sueño cuando hacia los goles para Velez o le pegaba por primera vez a una bolsa de boxeo: Ser campeón mundial.

El boxeador filipino Manny Pacquiao ha sido promocionado en una ceremonia oficial celebrada ayer en Manila, Filipinas, al rango de teniente coronel en la reserva, un cargo que no le permite entrar en combate real.

El actual campeón de peso wélter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), de 32 años, dirigirá al primer batallón de la reserva de Sarangani en operaciones de catástrofes naturales.

Pacquiao, también diputado, aseguró que se tomará en serio su nueva responsabilidad y prometió más victorias en el cuadrilátero y más glorias para Filipinas.

El boxeador asiático, antiguo campeón del mundo de los pesos pluma, supergallo y mosca, tiene apalabrado enfrentarse al estadounidense Floyd Mayweather Jr. a mediados del próximo año en Estados Unidos, posiblemente en Las Vegas, Nevada, en lo que está considerada la pelea más importante de los últimos años.

Berlín – El combate por la corona de los pesos pesados en tres asociaciones y federaciones entre el actual campeón, el ucranio Vladimir Klitschko, y el francés Jean Marc Mormeck ha sido aplazado sin fecha por enfermedad del púgil eslavo.

Klitschko fue operado de urgencia este sábado en la Clínica Universitaria de Düsseldorf para extirparle una piedra renal y se encuentra convaleciente desde entonces, anunciaron hoy los organizadores del evento.

El combate entre Klitschko, que ostenta las coronas de la OMB, AMB y FIB, debía disputarse el sábado próximo 8 de diciembre, en el pabellón Esprit Arena de la ciudad alemana de Düsseldorf, al oeste del país.

Los patrocinadores del más joven de los hermanos Klitschko, de 35 años, contaban inicialmente con que el púgil se recuperara en el plazo de una semana, pero los médicos han descartado que pueda estar listo para el combate.

BUENOS AIRES — Con un gancho al hígado perfecto, Diego Gabriel Cháves definió su pelea ante Jorge El Chino Miranda y de esa manera retuvo su título Latino welter de la OMB. La pelea fue en el club Vélez Sarsfield, de Buenos Aires. Todo bien, pero&¿Y ahora?

Cháves, tercera generación de boxeadores, tiene 25 años, ha ganado 20 peleas y 16 antes del límite. Su victoria ante Miranda ha sido la más valiosa de todas, porque el cordobés es un probador serio, difícil y experimentado: 44 victorias, 13 derrotas, 1 sin decisión y a su vez, ex campeón Latino welter OMB.

Miembro de una familia boxística, su caso es realmente curioso. Arrancó la historia con Rudecindo Cháves, que llegó a pelear en el Luna Park en los 70. Rudecindo luego condujo las carreras de sus hijos Abel, Ariel, Ismael.

Diego, a quien llaman La Joya, es hijo de Olga Cháves, o sea nieto directo de Rudecindo. Como el papá no apareció nunca, lo criaron sus tíos a quienes considera casi como hermanos. En total, contando a algunos de sus primos que también boxean, hay 12 boxeadores en la familia.

Zurdo, de una pegada respetable y buen estilo, clásico, fue bronce en los Panamericanos de Rio de Janeiro (2007). Hoy ha firmado un convenio con Vélez Sarsfield: el club -para el que también jugó al fútbol, y lo hizo bastante bien con el 10 en la espalda- le brinda toda su estructura y el tema pasa porque pelee en sus instalaciones siempre y cuando no exista otro tipo de oferta. Eso si, la parte pugilística la lleva a cabo en el ya legendario gimnasio familiar que está en San Miguel, en la provincia de Buenos Aires.

Su promotor, Mario Margossian, admite que está todo bien, pero hay un problema. “Fui a Puerto Rico, para la convención de la OMB, para hablar personalmente con Francisco Valcárcel sobre el futuro de Diego. Y por supuesto, lo tienen muy en cuenta. Pero el actual campeón welter OMB es nada más ni nada menos que Manny Pacquiao… ¿Qué podemos hacer?

Hasta ahora, solamente una vez peleó fuera de Argentina como rentado y eso fue en Las Vegas, el 27 de marzo del año pasado, cuando le ganó por puntos al brasileño Deban dos Santos Barros.

Diego, que sube a su rincón atendido por sus hermanos Ismael y Gabriel, acepta el tema con una sonrisa: “Lo único que quiero es seguir mejorando y dejar que el tiempo ponga las cosas en su lugar”

El sábado 26, en Vélez, Diego puso en el lugar exacto su puño izquierdo y logró la mejor victoria de su carrera. Por ahora, no le queda otra cosa que esperar.

SAN JUAN, 28 Nov. (Notimex).- El presidente de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel, felicitó al mexicano Jorge “Travieso” Arce haber alcanzado títulos mundiales en cinco pesos distintos.
De esta forma, Arce se convirtió en el primer mexicano en hacerlo y resaltó el que es el primer peleador en ganar cetros de la OMB en cuatro divisiones diferentes.
“Quiero felicitar por este medio al Travieso Arce por la historia que ha realizado al ser el primer mexicano con títulos en cinco diferentes pesos y más aún porque cuatro de esos títulos han sido de la OMB. Arce es el primer campeón con correas de cuatro categorías distintas con la OMB”, dijo Valcárcel.
“Arce es un gran boxeador, un gran campeón y, además, es una gran persona fuera del cuadrilátero. Es grande la historia que ha realizado Arce en su fructífera carrera”.
El peleador mexicano, de 32 años y con marca de 59-6-2 y 45 nocauts, se hizo de la corona peso gallo de la OMB este pasado sábado cuando venció por decisión unánime al indonesio Angky Angkotta (25-5 y 14 nocauts) en una dura batalla que se llevó a cabo en la Plaza de Toros Real de Mazatlán, Sinaloa, México.
De esta manera, Arce, natural de Los Mochis, Sinaloa, ha ostentado cetros mundiales en las 108, 112, 115, 118 y 122 libras. Con excepción del de las 112, el resto han sido cinturones de la OMB.

El campeón latino welter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), el invicto bonaerense Diego “La Joya” Chaves, está satisfecho luego de haber obtenido una de las victorias más importantes de su carrera, al fulminar con un contundente gancho al hígado en el tercer asalto al experimentado cordobés Jorge “El Chino” Miranda, defendiendo así por quinta ocasión su corona, el pasado sábado en el patinódromo del Club Vélez Sarsfield, de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A pesar de haber tenido enfrente un rival con amplia trayectoria internacional y que antes de subir al ring lo triplicaba en cantidad de combates (57 contra 19), Chaves (20-0, 16 KOs) dominó ampliamente las acciones y castigó duramente a Miranda (44-13-0-1 sd, 16 KOs) previo a la categórica definición. Sin embargo, quien fuera reconocido como el Boxeador Latino del Año por la OMB en su 24ª Convención Anual de Puerto Rico, prefiere no saltear etapas. A pesar ocupar el 4to. lugar en el ranking welter de la OMB, 5to. de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (AMB), y el 15to. de la Federación Internacional de Boxeo (FIB), prefiere seguir haciendo su trabajo. No se apura. Pero si una oportunidad mundialista se concreta, estará listo.

“Fue una de las peleas más importantes de mi carrera. La victoria y de la forma que se dio fue algo importante. Pero no creí que fuera tan rápido”, afirmó “La Joya”, durante una comunicación telefónica mantenida en la noche del domingo en el programa radial “Ring Side en el Aire” , que conduce Carlos Irusta, por Radio La Red, de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

La definición con gancho zurdo al hígado en el tercer round dejó al “Chino” arrodillado en la lona por varios segundos, sin atisbo de reacción. “Entró con justeza -continuó-. Ya lo había tocado un par de veces con la derecha al plexo y lo había sentido. Pero el gancho al hígado fue algo muy justo”.

El festejo tuvo como cuota extra el hecho de estar combatiendo por tercera vez en su casa, Vélez Sarsfield, club al que representa y del que es simpatizante (además de haberse desempeñado como futbolista en las divisiones inferiores, hasta la cuarta). Otro velezano que brilló en la noche del sábado fue el campeón superwelter OMB, el también bonaerense Javier “La Bestia” Maciel, quien estrenó su corona con otro fulminante gancho al hígado para noquear en 35 segundos al uruguayo Néstor Faccio. Por ello, la alegría de los fanáticos fue más que completa. Incluso, ya se menciona la posibilidad de montar una velada al aire libre en el estadio José Amalfitani (de fútbol) que tiene capacidad para más de 50 mil personas, con combates de amplia trascendencia.

“Sabíamos que ganarle a Miranda iba a ser algo importante. Y de la forma en que lo hicimos, lo hizo aún más especial. Por eso el festejo”, señaló el nacido en San Miguel hace 25 años, quien agregó: “Creo que estamos devolviéndolo a Vélez lo que nos da con las victorias contundentes que estamos teniendo. Con Javier estamos súper contentos por todo el apoyo que nos el club. Estamos a la expectativa, esperando que nos toque una chance. Pelear en el estadio sería algo muy especial e importante para los dos. Estamos muy contentos también por el esfuerzo que está haciendo nuestro representante, Mario Margossian, y todos nuestros sponsors. Ojalá más clubes se contagiaran a Vélez y colaboraran con el boxeo para sacar más chicos de la calle”.

En relación a su futuro, a pesar de poseer el cinturón latino OMB welter, “La Joya” es consciente de que quien reina en la categoría, el filipino Manny Pacquiao, está varios escalones arriba. Si bien como todo boxeador se ilusiona con llegar a lo máximo, se concentra en su actualidad.

“Manny Pacquiao está muy por encima nuestro. Estamos haciendo una buena carrera, y debemos ir de a poco. En algún momento tendremos una chance y no habrá que desaprovecharla. Pero hay que vivir el momento, y seguir tranquilo, paso a paso”, aseguró.

“Día a día tengo que esforzarme más. Ahora las peleas van a ser cada vez más duras y más complicadas. Hay que trabajar el doble de lo que se trabajó hasta hoy. Creo que mi desempeño el sábado fue algo muy bueno y de muy buena calidad de boxeo. Creo que demostré mi crecimiento arriba del ring. Así que a seguir esforzándome al máximo y dando lo mejor de mí día a día en el gimnasio, para después llevarlo al ring. Así, cuando la oportunidad llegue, tendré que estar listo“, culminó.
