Unified world champion Jermell Charlo and WBO world champion Brian Castaño met face-to-face on Thursday at the final press conference to preview their undisputed 154-pound world championship showdown taking place this Saturday, July 17 live on SHOWTIME from AT&T Center in San Antonio in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

Thursday’s press conference also featured unbeaten Interim WBA Lightweight Champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero and former title challenger Anthony Yigit, who meet in the co-main event, and unbeaten middleweight Amilcar Vidal and veteran contender Immanuwel Aleem, who battle in the telecast opener at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

The hard-hitting unified champion Charlo and the exciting Argentine Castaño will go toe-to-toe as all of the super welterweight championship belts are on the line for the first time in the four-belt era. The highly anticipated matchup will add to the long and storied history of major championship fights to take place in San Antonio.

JERMELL CHARLO

“I’m excited to be fighting back in Texas, but I’ll fight anywhere. As long as everyone tunes in, they know what time it is. I’m more than ready. I’m excited and anxious to get in the ring.

“This is a dream come true. I’ve wanted to be undisputed since I was a child because this is the highest you can reach in boxing. Being in this moment really makes me thankful to my whole team who helped me get to this point.

“Now is the time that me and my brother finally get the opportunity to show the world what we’re worth. This is the moment for us. Opportunities like this don’t come around too often, so I have to go out there and take advantage.

“I’m not old enough to think about the Hall of Fame yet. I’m just focusing on the right now. I have a goal to accomplish that will take 36 minutes or less on Saturday. I’ll look into everything else that this means after Saturday night.

“I don’t have any pressure on me. I’ve been in this position so many times in my life. If I felt the pressure, I wouldn’t be in this moment. He has to come and do his thing. He has to put the pressure on me and avoid these bombs I’m throwing.

“I can’t predict the future, but just know that I’m stronger and faster than I was before. I just feel like I’m ready. I have power in every punch I throw and I’m thankful for this opportunity to face another champion.

“I have the don’t blink attitude for this fight. You never know what could happen at any moment of any round. I’ve knocked people out in just about every round. We’re both in good shape, so we’re going to find out who’s better Saturday.

“A focused Jermell is the most dangerous Jermell there could be. I have different skill sets that I can implement in this fight no matter what Castaño does. I have a lot that I can do depending what Castaño brings.

“My loss was just all part of God’s plan. After the controversial loss, I got right back in there for the rematch. I had jet fuel in me and went on to unify and now we’re going to keep going. There’s no stopping the show.

“It’s dangerous for him to come forward and walk into shots. Most opponents that I’ve faced who’ve done that, I’ve put them out. We’ll see if he’s able to stand up to the power.

“I put my life on the line to feed my family. I have a lot of things that I need the boxing world to understand before my career is over. You can see that I’ve always faced tough opponents. My mindset was always stay focused, so you don’t get cut, like in the NFL. You have to work hard so nobody takes your position. That’s how I look at it mentally. I’m in a great position, but I still have a lot more to prove.”

BRIAN CASTAÑO

“For me and my team, this is yet another opportunity to lift Argentine boxing up and add another star to that legacy. That’s what I want and I’m enjoying this moment. I promise that on Saturday night, I’m going to leave it all in the ring for everybody.

“He has all the pressure on him being in his home state. I’ve been training so hard for nine months and I’m comfortable as the underdog. I always come in as the underdog, so I don’t feel any pressure.

“When it comes down to it, if I have to lower my punch output to put more power on my punches, then I will. I don’t like to focus on past fights, because we have our own game plans for this fight. I have a plan to come out victorious Saturday night.

“We have a war to fight on July 17. I’m not thinking about anything beyond that fight. My mind is fully set on becoming undisputed champion Saturday night.

“I guarantee the fans are going to enjoy this fight and won’t leave disappointed. Both of us are going to do whatever it takes to come out victorious and that will make sure the fans will love this fight.

“I want to make not only Argentina, but all of Latin America proud. That’s what I want to do on Saturday night.

“In the end, I can only focus on what I’m going to do. If Charlo wants to be more finesse, I can deal with that, and if he wants to brawl, then by all means I will welcome that as well.

“Seeing Argentina win the Copa America last Saturday night motivated me even more. Messi deserved his title, and he made the entire country happy. I hope that the party can continue a week later with an undisputed champion as well

“Height and reach are the only similarities between Jermell and Erislandy Lara and Michel Soro. He’s his own man and he’s certainly a tough opponent to face.”

Nobody said defending a world title is easy. WBO junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer successfully defended her title for the first time, turning back the stiff challenge of former two-weight world champion Erica Farias via unanimous decision (98-92 2x and 97-93).

Mayer (15-0, 5 KOs), one of female boxing’s most recognizable names, bested the most seasoned opponent of her career, a relentless woman who has fought in 19 world title fights and threw 400 punches in 10 rounds. Mayer outlanded Farias 118-86 and now has her sights on IBF injizierbare steroide world champion Maïva Hamadouche. Mayer and Hamadouche are scheduled to fight in a unification bout later this year.

Mayer said, ““I was just waiting to get through this fight to get to Maïva. Remind her that I’ll see her soon.”

Brian Castaño (17-0-1, 12 KOs) of Buenos Aires, Argentina captured the WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship by scoring a 12-round unanimous decision win against Patrick Teixeira (31-2, 22 KOs) of Sao Paulo, Brasil. Castaño won with scores of 120-108, 119-109, and 117-111l.

“I am very happy. We did a great job with my team,” said Brian Castaño. “It was a good fight. We all mistakes, and I have to fix things here and there, but a fight is a fight. Each fight is different, and I understand that. I knew Teixeira very well going into this fight. He is very strong, and he has a lot of heart. He is a great. This was one of the greatest victories of my career.”

The fight headlined a stacked card of action that was streamed live exclusively on DAZN in more than 200 countries and territories, including the U.S., Mexico, Russia, Tajikistan, Brazil and Argentina.

El último viernes en el Club Olímpico de la localidad santafesina de Villa Gobernador Gálvez, la anfitriona Daniela Romina “Bonita” Bermúdez (28-3-3, 9 KO), volvió a demostrar su condición de top-3 libra por libra y por quinta ocasión, defendió con el éxito el título mundial gallo de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), en esta oportunidad noqueando técnicamente en nueve asaltos a la batalladora venezolana y dos veces campeona mundial, Alys “la China” Sánchez (16-7-1, 5 KO). El pleito pudo disfrutarse por la pantalla de TyC Sports, en una nueva producción internacional de O.R. Promotions.

Una vez más, la contundencia y voracidad de Bermúdez (53,500) quedaron plasmadas al castigar de sol a sol a una Sánchez (53,500) que poco pudo hacer ante su poderío, aunque vendió cara su derrota y en todo momento se mantuvo en pelea.

Débora López logró esta noche alcanzar el título vacante de la división mosca de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB) al vencer a la venezolana Niorkis Carreño en la pelea central que se desarrolló en el club Social y Deportivo Camioneros de Luis Guillón.

Después de un combate de 10 asaltos, los jueces vieron ganadora a la púgil argentina en las tarjetas de 98-91 y dos de 100-89.

La Indiecita López, de 24 años, quedó con un palmarés de 16 victorias (una por la vía rápida), un empate y ninguna derrota, en 17 presentaciones. Por su lado, la venezolana Carreño, oriunda de Caracas, tiene un récord de 19 triunfos (14 por nocaut) y dos caídas.

Saunders will put his WBO Super Middleweight title on the line for the first time against Esteban Coceres on the undercard of KSI-Logan Paul 2 at the Staples Center in the early hours of Sunday morning, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

WBO Jr. Lightweight Female Champion Ewa Brodnicka (17-0, 2KO) will face former unified champion Edith Soledad Matthysse (16-10-1, 1KO).

This contest will take place on October 4 in Hala Sportowa, Czestochowa, Poland.

The 35-year old fighter from Poland is one of the reasons the division is exciting. She will be making her fourth title defense since winning the belt in 2018. She was elevated to full champion when German Ramona Kuehne vacated the title in 2018 to make the move to lightweight.

The all-action aggressive style of the champion will undoubtedly make this a very good fight to watch.

Matthysse, age 38, is a very tough competitor with a deceiving record. She brings an overwhelming amount of experience to the table.

The tough Argentinian has shared the ring with some of the best in the business. That list features Jackie Nava, Marcela Eliana Acuna, Yazmin Rivas and Jelena Mrdjenovich. This experience should prove valuable going into a fight against a challenger coming of a two fight win streak.

INTERESTING FACTS

Brodnicka has never fought outside of Poland. Also, she was part of the support team for Tomas Adamek when he fought Jarrell Miller back in 2018.

Matthysse, is the sister to former WBA “regular” welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse. Additionally, her claim to fame was when she defeated Mrdjenovich in 2015 by a highly unlikely unanimous decision to become the unified Jr. Lightweight champion. She would go on to lose the immediate rematch.

This has the makings of an exciting fight, as both women have that aggressive, come-forward style and finish every combination with a body shot.

This women division is deep with mouth watering unification match-up possibilities.

Hopefully, as the year closes, we will see at least one take place to provide some clarity.

Daniela Bermúdez retuvo anoche su título mundial gallo de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), al vencer a la mexicana Valeria Pérezen el club Sportivo América, en Rosario.

La Bonita mostró su superioridad a lo largo del combate y, después de un séptimo asalto de gran factura, el rincón de su rival tiró la toalla en el descanso, decretando el nocaut técnico en el octavo.

La argentina concretó la cuarta defensa consecutiva de su título ganado en octubre de 2017, cuando le ganó a la puntana Soledad del Valle Frías, en Jujuy.

En aquel momento, Bermúdez se hizo del título vacante de la divisional, que después defendió frente a Marcela La Tigresa Acuña, Yolis Marrugo Franco, Irma García y Pérezen.

La argentina ostenta un récord de 26 peleas ganadas, 3 empatadas y 3 perdidas, con ocho nocauts a su favor.

La campeona mundial de peso gallo de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo, Daniela Bermúdez, considerada una de los mejores boxeadoras libra por libra, hará una nueva defensa su corona, esta vez ante la mexicana Valeria Pérez.

La pelea se llevará a cabo este sábado en el Club Sportivo América, en Rosario, Santa Fe.

Bermúdez (25-3-3, 7 KO) realizará la cuarta defensa de su título mundial. La Bonita no pierde desde el 2015, año desde el que acumula nueve victorias de forma consecutiva.

“Vamos si Dios quiere y mi virgencita de Luján estaré defendiendo mi cinturón contra
una gran boxeadora mexicana, no se lo pierdan”, escribió la campeona a través de
cuenta de instagram.

La retadora será la azteca Pérez (12-6, 2KO), quien peleará por segunda vez seguida en
suelo argentino. En su última presentación cayó derrotada por decisión unánime ante la

Tres Arroyos, Argentina – Daniela Romina ¨Bonita¨ Bermúdez (25-3-3, 7 KOs) retained her WBO bantamweight world title by defeating Mexican veteran Irma ¨Torbellino¨ García (20-4-1, 3 KOs) by unanimous decision over ten rounds. The scores of the judges were: 98-92 X3 all in favor of Bermúdez.

Bermúdez quickly found the right distance. She based his strategy plan on greater technique, speed and physical reserves to dominated extensively and from the center of the ring modeled an efficient work that allowed to accumulate advantages in each round.

The challenger looked uncomfortable, confused and without finding answers to the offensive problems that the champion raised. Bermúdez from the sixth round accelerated her game of combinations, placing crossed hands and low planes. All of Garcia’s attempts were neutralized with defensive mechanisms and counter-punches from La Bonita.

There’s chasing greatness then there’s chasing greatness and catching it. Once you get to a certain pinnacle in your career, the really good ones look to be great. Enter Puerto Rico’s own Amanda Serrano. A female fighter that has had quite an amazing career. The only Puerto Rican fighter to win a title in five divisions.

Serrano will be making her return to ring after a long break from the sport. She last fought in November scoring a TKO victory over Marilyn Hernandez. Afterwards she took a hiatus from the sport, she began to train for MMA, her new challenge. You would think she wouldn’t box again but don’t tell her that.

She will return to the ring on September 8th to face Yamila Esther Reynoso for the vacant WBO Junior Welterweight Title. It will be an opportunity to win a title in her sixth division.

Here’s the thing. Her last bout was at super bantamweight, she will be moving up a whopping four divisions!

She’s already great and has achieved greatness in the ring, this is about enhancing her legacy. She’s already cemented her name in the history books, this about adding another chapter to what’s already a great story. She doesn’t get the attention of her male counterparts, not even close to receiving the the same amount of money.

This is about someone that gets in the ring because she loves it.

She has earned all the success she has had, she works hard and is constantly in the gym. She pushes herself and the ones that do, usually do great things. Her idol is Miguel Cotto who has held belts in four different divisions, she’s already surpassed that and looks to add to her lead.

She has an illustrious nine year career but she’s not done yet.

She will be chasing history once again, come September 8th but don’t think she’s done yet! She has dared to be great and achieved it.

What’s next after September 8th? What bout her stepping back into cage? That’s the game plan she has publicly spoke about, that’s not just about being great, that’s pushing to do great things.

In the main event, WBO Interim Latino Welterweight Champion Diego “Chacarero” Ramírez (15-1, 3 KOs) will battle fellow countryman Sergio Manuel “Junior” Liendo (12-4-0, 3 KO) in a 10-round fight.

RAMÍREZ, 23 years old, born in the city of Coronda, is going through the best moment of his career. After a 2017 with victories over Nahuel Galessi, Ezequiel Vargas, Diego Luque, Jonathan Casafú and Damián Yapur – for the title he will defend this Friday-; consolidated his present in the current year, where he defeated by points Martin Bulacio and Walter Castillo on his first WBO Interim Latino title defense. It should be noted that in addition to its regional achievements, it holds the first place in the Argentine ranking.

LIENDO JR, 24 years old, born in the city of Río Cuarto, is the son of the former Argentine, South American and Latin super bantamweight champion, Sergio Rafael Liendo. En el combate estelar de la noche, se pondrá en juego el título latino interino wélter/66.678 kg de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), que expondrá por segunda ocasión el promisorio santafesino de Coronda, Diego “Chacarero” Ramírez (15-1-0, 3 KO), en esta oportunidad frente al aguerrido retador cordobés de Río Cuarto, Sergio Manuel “Junior” Liendo (12-4-0, 3 KO). Si quiere consolidarse, deberá superar un reconocido y férreo retador, poniendo su “Título en riesgo”. El campeón latino welter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), el invicto bonaerense Luis “Lucho” Verón, se enfrentará al pegador entrerriano Daniel “Cainchi” Aquino, intentando defender por primera ocasión su corona, en el combate estelar de la velada que se desarrollará hoy viernes, 20 de julio, en el Club Deportivo San Andrés, sito en Intendente Casares 2845, San Martín, provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina, en una nueva producción de Argentina Boxing Promotions, de Mario Margossian, que será transmitida en vivo a través de TyC Sports a partir de las 23, para Argentina y toda América.

Estrenando su reinado en casa, Verón (14-0, 7 KOs), ex integrante del seleccionado argentino amateur, actual Nº 7 del ranking mundial welter OMB y Nº 3 del escalafón nacional welter, buscará defender por primera vez el cetro que conquistó el pasado 27 de abril al destronar al bonaerense Gabriel Ledesma en fallo mayoritario en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Enfrente tendrá a Aquino (18-4, 13 KOs), Nº 7 del ranking argentino welter, de reconocida trayectoria y doble retador a esta misma corona, que viene del 18 de mayo último dominar al bonaerense Marcelo Bzowski en fallo unánime en Villaguay, Entre Ríos, y quiere alzarse con el cinturón.

En la tarde del jueves, ambos superaron la ceremonia de pesaje en las instalaciones de la Federación Argentina de Box, dejando todo listo para su choque. El primero fue Verón, quien pesó 66,250 kg. -146 lbs.-. Tras ello, Aquino registró 66 kg. -145.5 lbs.-.

Buscando lucir frente a su gente, Verón, nacido en José León Suárez hace 26 años, tras su paso en el seleccionado argentino ha superado a cada oponente en el campo rentado entre los que sobresalen el entonces invicto pampeano Cristian Zárate, el chaqueño Gonzalo Chaparro, ambos en fallo unánime, destruyó al misionero Martín Kuroski por nocaut técnico en el séptimo capítulo, y dominó al santafesino Jonatan Vázquez unánimemente, intentará defender por primera ocasión la corona que conquistó sobre Ledesma.

Enfrente tendrá a Aquino, nacido en Paraná, Entre Ríos, hace 29 años, que superara entre otros a los bonaerenses Alfredo Blanco y Daniel López, y noqueara al pampeano Diego Aguilera y el entrerriano Leandro Cirolla, solo dejando su invicto ante el rionegrino Gabriel Puñalef Calfín, tras caer con el jujeño Juan Velasco en el quinto asalto, dominar al correntino Ramón Sena en fallo unánime, despachar al misionero Juan Carlos Pedrozo en el primero y a Sena en el cuarto en el desquite, el 7 de octubre último tras ir ganando en las tarjetas fue detenido por Ledesma en el octavo por el mismo cinturón, y luego el 6 de enero en el quinto en la revancha, pero viene recuperado tras vencer a Bzowski y listo para amargar la fiesta local.

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) will oversee seven headline bouts around the world this weekend, two of which are for world titles.

Starting Friday, June 8, in Verona, New York, WBO number one ranked Junior Featherweight Diego De La Hoya (20-0, 9 KOs) will defend his NABO 122 lbs title against José “Sugar” Salgado (35-4-2, 28 KOs) in a 10-round duel. The bout is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and will go on stage at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in the aforementioned city.

The fight will be televised live on ESPN3, starting at 9:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). ESPN2 will air the fights at 12:30 a.m. ET/9:30 p.m. PT. and ESPN Deportes will air the fights the following day at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

De La Hoya-Salgado will take place during the International Boxing Hall of Fame induction weekend, where “Dr. Ironfist” Vitali Klitschko, Erik “El Terrible” Moráles, and Ronald “Winky” Wright will be exalted, along with other important boxing figures such as Peter Kohl, Steve Albert, Jim Gray and Lorraine Chargin.

On Saturday, June 9 in Argentina, Facundo Galovar (10-2-1, 7 KOs), of Tucumán, and Rolando Mansilla (13-5-1, 5 KOs), of Entre Ríos, will face off for the vacant WBO Latino Super Middleweight belt in a scheduled 10 round bout. The card will take place at the Club Atlético Central Córdoba in San Miguel, as part of an event promoted by Argentina Boxing Promotions.

Also on Saturday, but in the Philippines, two WBO Jr. Featherweight title bouts will take place, when local pugilist Jeo “Santino” Santisima (15-2, 13 KOs) faces Likit Chane (16-6, 10 KOs), from Thailand, for the vacant WBO Oriental 122 lbs belt, and local Albert Pagara (29-1, 20 KOs), who is ranked No. 9 by the WBO, battles Laryea Gabriel Odoi (20-3-2, 14 KOs), of Ghana, for the vacant Inter-Continental Junior Featherweight title. Both fights are scheduled for 12 rounds in an event promoted by ALA Promotions at the Maasin City Complex.

In England, the former WBO Lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan (33-0, 13 KOs), from Manchester, will seek to reign in a second division, when he clashes with Texan Maurice Hooker (23-0-3, 16KOs) for the vacant WBO Junior Welterweight crown. The duel will be the main event of a card presented by Queensberry Promotions. The fight will be held at Manchester Arena. Flanagan and Hooker are ranked in the first and second positions, respectively, at the Junior Welterweight division.

During his reign in the Lightweight division, Flanagan successfully defended the title five times.

The fight will be televised by BT Sports, on Showtime Boxing’s Facebook page, as well as in Showtime Sports’ YouTube Channel and Panama Cable Onda Sports beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT.

Another WBO world title fight will be staged this Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada. Here, welterweight campion Jeff Horn, of Australia, will face WBO Super Champion and former Lighweight and Junior Welterweight champion Terence Crawford, of Omaha, Nebraska.

For Horn (18-0-1, 12 KOs), it will be the second defense of the title he won by beating legendary WBO Super Champion, Manny Pacquiao.

With a victory over Horn, Crawford (32-0-0, 23 KOs) would join Oscar De La Hoya (130 lbs, 135 lbs, 160 lbs), Miguel Cotto (140 lbs, 147 lbs, 154 lbs), Jorge Arce (108 lbs, 115 lbs, 122 lbs) and Fernando Montiel (112 lbs, 115 lbs, 118 lbs) as the only three divisions champions of the entity. El campeón argentino y latino supermediano de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), el invicto platense Ezequiel “El Olímpico” Maderna, se impuso sobre el ex monarca argentino, sudamericano y latino OMB, el ex retador mundialista bonaerense Rubén “Siru” Acosta, por puntos, en un amplio fallo unánime, tras doce asaltos, y así defendió por segunda ocasión su corona latina OMB, en un combate revancha que fue el estelar de la velada desarrollada en la noche del sábado en el Club Atlético Platense de La Plata, La Plata, provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Además, Maderna repitió lo ocurrido el 5 de marzo de 2011, cuando lo derrotó en amplio fallo unánime y le arrebató el cinturón argentino.

Ante un retador que siempre intentó acortar las distancias para acertar sus ascendentes, cruzados y boleados, Maderna debió esforzarse para frenarlo con sus derechas cruzadas y ascendentes al rostro, sumados a algunos ganchos al cuerpo, que acusaron recibo en el marplatense. Por momentos, logró conmoverlo cuando se decidió a trabajar al cuerpo. Cada vez que descargó sus derechas e izquierdas a las costillas y la zona hepática, encontraron marcado destino en su rival. Y más allá de estar algo dubitativo para resolver con su derecha cuando lo tuvo contra las cuerdas, llevó las acciones de principio a fin. Por más que el férreo “Siru” apeló a toda su experiencia y sus incesantes avances, careció de claridad. Tan es así que sufrió tres descuentos de puntos: uno en el segundo, producto de un golpe en la nuca, y dos en el quinto, fruto de un nuevo envió en la nuca y el restante por cabezazo. Y como si fuera poco, en el séptimo, quien fuera el único representante argentino en los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekín 2008 cerca estuvo de definirlo, tras enviarlo a la lona con un contundente gancho zurdo al hígado. Sin embargo, debió trabajar hasta el campanazo final, para conocer su merecida victoria.

 Las tarjetas de los jueces expresaron en números gran parte de la diferencia exhibida, al decretar: Héctor Primerano 120-104, Héctor Miguel 119-105, Jorge Milicay 119-105, todas para el dueño de casa. Para NotiFight.com, la victoria fue de 117-107.

De entrada, el campeón dijo presente cuando descargó su izquierda directa a la mejilla, que lo hizo retroceder. Ante un retador que avanzaba, Maderna lo mantenía lejos y contragolpeaba cuando combinó su izquierda en punta y su cross diestro arriba, aunque sin mayores consecuencias. En el segundo, mientras Acosta procuraba acortar para soltar su derecha directa al rostro, el local lo llevó a una esquina e impactó un cross diestro al estómago. Entrando y saliendo, el bonaerense pero marplatense por adopción filtró su izquierda cruzada al plexo. Pero en el cruce siguiente, “El Olímpico” lo llevó a las cuerdas y descargó su cross derecho al mentón. Y tras un clinch, el visitante lo golpeo en la nuca, lo que le valió el descuento de un punto por parte del árbitro Gustavo Tomás.

En el tercero, el “Siru” acortó la distancia y acertó su izquierda cruzada a la mandíbula. Con el campeón a la defensiva, descargó un cross diestro al mentón. Y apostando siempre a su veloces traslados, entró a la corta y volvió a encontrarlo con una izquierda ascendente a la mandíbula, bien asimilada por el local. En el siguiente, con Acosta en retroceso, Maderna impactó un certero cross zurdo a la mandíbula, que acusó recibo. Recién en ese momento comenzó a trabajar al cuerpo con su gancho derecho a las costillas, para frenar sus embates.

Tras estudiarlo en el comienzo del quinto, el platense lo hizo trastabillar con un cross zurdo a la mandíbula. Segundos después, el marplatense volvió a impactarlo en la nuca, lo que le valió el segundo descuento de un punto. El desprolijo avance del visitante originó un duro choque de cabezas, que luego de la intervención del médico atendiendo la nariz del local, obligó a Tomás otro descuento de punto a Acosta, quien además terminó recibiendo el cross derecho del invicto sobre su mentón.

En el sexto, Maderna volvió a llevarlo a las cuerdas, donde descargó dos potentes derechas cruzadas a las costillas. El “Siru” acortó y acertó su izquierda boleada plena al pómulo. Y a pesar de dos cross diestros del platense al cuerpo, el retador lo complicó en la corta, donde arremetió con una nueva izquierda cruzada a la mandíbula.

Luego de que se midieran al inicio del séptimo, un visitante más activo logró filtrar su izquierda ascendente al mentón en corto, aunque sin consecuencias. Pero cuando parecía que el visitante se llevaba el asalto, “El Olímpico” descargó un contundente gancho zurdo al hígado que acusó tanto recibo en un retador que, con retroceso, se fue al suelo. Tras ello, Maderna fue a la carga y volvió a impactar sus derechas e izquierdas curvas a las costillas, y sólo la guapeza del marplatense lo ayudó a permanecer de pie.

Pero en el octavo, el local volvió a la carga. Lo llevó a una esquina y combinó su izquierda en gancho a la zona hepática, su cross derecho y ascendente al mentón, levantando a su público. Acosta logró salir del asedio con veloces pasos laterales y un gancho zurdo a la mejilla. Pero sólo segundo después, Maderna volvió a conmoverlo cuando impactó su derecha recta a las costillas y ascendente al mentón.

Anticipando con su izquierda en punta salió el local en el noveno, donde acertó su cross diestro al mentón. A pesar de los incesantes avances del marplatense que buscaba con boleados y ascendentes al rostro, el campeón fue más certero con sus derechas cruzadas a la mandíbula. Con ambos tomándose un respiro arrancó el siguiente. El “Siru” dijo presente con un cross zurdo leve a la mandíbula de un platense por momentos dubitativo. Y con su rival avanzando, Acosta contragolpeó con una izquierda curva pero algo ascendente a la mandíbula, para frenarlo.

Con un tan veloz como contundente cross diestro a la mejilla, “El Olímpico” hizo retroceder al retador al iniciar el undécimo. Y tras cederle la iniciativa, lo frenó con su derecha ascendente al pecho. Pero tras conectar otro uppercut diestro al mentón, bajó su guardia y recibió el largo gancho zurdo de Acosta sobre su mandíbula.

Sobre el final, el local evitó los riesgos y mantuvo la distancia con su izquierda en punta al mentón. Con un “Siru” intentando acortar para encontrarlo con su izquierda boleada, lo frenó con su uppercut diestro al mentón. Y luego de esquivar y dejar los envíos del visitante en el aire, filtró esporádicas derechas ascendentes al rostro, suficientes para llevarse la vuelta, y originar el aplauso de sus seguidores. Tras el campanazo definitivo, sólo habría tiempo para las tan previsibles como merecidas tarjetas de los jurados, que desataron el festejo de todo el público local, a sabiendas que el cinturón permanecería en casa.

De esta forma, Maderna, que pesó 76,200 kg., actual N° 10 del ranking OMB de la división, y que no expuso su corona argentina, repite lo ocurrido el 5 de marzo de 2011, cuando lo derrotó en otro amplio fallo unánime y le arrebató el cinturón nacional en este mismo escenario . Con este resultado, retiene por segunda ocasión el cetro que conquistó el 28 de mayo de 2011 cuando liquidó en menos de tres minutos al bonaerense Martín Bruer, y que refrendó el 27 agosto, al pulverizar al uruguayo Jorge Rodríguez Olivera, por nocaut técnico en tres capítulos, ambos en City Bell, Buenos Aires. Llegaba tras dar cuenta del cordobés Darío Balmaceda en menos de un round, en defensa de su corona nacional, el 5 de noviembre en City Bell. Así, aumenta su marca a 17 victorias (12 KOs), en igual cantidad de peleas. En tanto Acosta, que también registró 76,200 kg., y que además de haber sido monarca argentino, sudamericano y latino OMB de la categoría, disputó sin éxito el título mundial supermediano OMB, al caer como visitante frente alemán al local Robert Stieglitz el 9 de enero de 2010, desmejora a 24 triunfos (8 KOs), 7 derrotas y 5 empates.

WBO Latino Super Middleweight champion Ezequiel “El Olímpico” Maderna (17-0, 12 KOs) of Argentina again unanimously decisioned countryman Rubén “Siru” Acosta (24-7-5, 8 KOs). The bout was a rematch of their first fight over a year ago where Maderna unanimously decisioned Acosta. Maderna won this time even wider on the scorecards. After 12 completed rounds the official judges scores read 120-104 and 119-105 twice. Acosta was deducted points for hitting Maderna behind the head in rounds two and five. In round seven Maderna scored a knockdown when a shot to the liver area of Acosta had him holding on and eventually going down but he beat the count. The bout was marred by a lot of holding on the inside, but Maderna clearly landed the cleaner punches by far. The bout took placeat el Club Atlético Platense de La Plata La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Argentina Boxing Promotions, headed by Mario Margossian promoted the event.

“Yo siempre quiero ser primero en todo. Me pone muy contento ser el presidente de la entidad que fiscalizará la primera pelea de boxeo en esta hermosa tierra, como fuimos los primeros en montar un título del mundo hace un par de semanas con Juan Manuel Marquez en la nueva arena de México”, con estas palabras, Francisco Valcarcel, un abogado puertorriqueño de 62 años que desde 1995 dirige la OMB. Fue reelecto en cuatro ocasiones y se prepara para festejar en octubre los jóvenes 25 años del ente que hizo fuerte en Europa y desde alli comenzó a extender sus dominios.

“El mundo del boxeo es muy discriminatorio. Si eres una cara nueva ni te saludan. Es como en el ejército vales por los galones que tienes. Nosotros empezamos de muy abajo, nos decian que eramos europeos porque teniamos boxeadores ingleses y alemanes. En la OMB surgieron Naseem Hamed, Chris Eubank, Dariusz Michalczewski y los hermanos Klitschko. Todo nos costo el doble porque no podiamos entrar en Estados Unidos y en México, pero hicimos un trabajo hormiga y hoy puedo decirte que tenemos 65 federaciones en todo el mundo”, explico quien es un eximio jugador de golf y comparte jornadas por los green de distintas canchas junto a Oscar De La Hoya. “Después de hacer firmes compromisos con los promotores fuertes de Europa, decidimos buscar a los mejores boxeadores de las pequeñas ligas y por medio de títulos regionales fuimos integrandolos a nuestro proyecto. Asi apareció Pacquiao, igual que Cotto. Nos aliamos con la gente del Forum, en Los Angeles y conseguimos ingresar a Mexico y Los Estados Unidos. Hoy tenemos un título norteamericano, cosa que hace quince años era impensable”, afirmó quien ayer departió amablemente con cuanto sanjuanino lo saludó y que presidió la lectura de reglamento y la elección de guantes por parte de los representantes de los protagonistas de la pelea por el título del mundo.

“Al Negro Rivero (Osvaldo Rivero) lo conocí en Francia y con el entramos a la Argentina, uno de los paises mas fuertes en boxeo. Narvaez es uno de nuestros campeones emblema en esta parte del continente”, confio quien ha logrado ingresar con el boxeo a China. “Es una cosa curiosa, porque por su sistema de gobierno a sus mejores amateurs no los dejan pasar al profesionalismo, pero el boxeo ha prendido y se impondra. Cada vez asiste mas gente a las veladas”, explicó quien prometió volver a San Juan cuando retorne a la Argentina porque le interesa conocer el Valle de la Luna. “Si es Patrimonio de la Humanidad, debo visitarlos”, conto este afable ciudadano del mundo.

¿Cómo explicar en breves líneas lo que siente un amante del boxeo que tiene el privilegio de presenciar la carrera profesional de Omar Andrés “El huracán” Narváez (nacido el 10/07/75 en Trelew, Chubut, 36 años, zurdo), hombre record del boxeo argentino,  desde la mismísima primera fila y trabajando como parte activa del show?

¡Simplemente nos sentimos afortunados, elegidos! Este “enano” que el 13 de julio de 2002 reabría nada más y nada menos que el mítico estadio Luna Park –cuna de las máximas expresiones del boxeo argentino-  después de un paréntesis de más de una década. Quizás el destino quiso que sea éste boxeador, zurdo, dueño de un bagaje técnico envidiable, que minimiza hasta a los buenos oponentes en la previa, dejándolos en condición de “casi novatos”, ante la superioridad desplegada por el hombre de la Patagonia argentina.

Este campeón, que superará en su próxima defensa al inglés Joe “El príncipe da Gales” Calzaghe (ganó el título súper mediano de la OMB el 11/10/97 ante Chris Eubank y lo defendió hasta el 03/11/07 cuando venciera a Mikkel Kessler, es decir 10 años y unos 20 días) como el campeón más longevo de la OMB en toda su historia

El mismo Narváez que, quien les dice, pueda ir  por el record mundial de Joe “El bombardero de Detroit” Louis (nacido el 13/05/1914 en Lexington, Alabama, Estados Unidos). Aquel histórico pesado que reinara desde 1936 hasta 1949 en forma ininterrumpida y que quedara en la gloria como el campeón en actividad con mayor duración de su reinado, 13 años.

Narváez, el mismo campeón que ganó las fajas mosca y súper mosca.Lleva 23 peleas de título mundial, 2 cuando ganara ambas coronas -16 defensas de la corona mosca OMB y 4 de la súper mosca del mismo organismo- e intentará capturar la faja gallo ante el excelente filipino Nonito Donaire, perdiendo por decisión. Siendo ésta su única derrota. Total 23 luchas ecuménicas.

El mismo hombre que le sacara los lauros de mayores defensas consecutivas al mismísimo Carlos Monzón y que superara en cantidad de combates a los históricos Juan Martín “Látigo” Coggi y Santos “Falucho” Laciar o al propio Julio César “El zurdo” Vásquez.

El mismo púgil que realizara la única pelea titular en la provincia de San Juan, etc, etc, etc.

Para nosotros, no hay discusiones amigos, uno de los cinco mejores boxeadores de toda la historia rica del boxeo argentino. No lo decimos nosotros, los números no mienten y son abrumadores. Ah, por las dudas, quiere más. El propio Joe Louis –vaya a saber desde donde- implora para que se retire antes de alcanzarlo. No vaya a ser que quede en la historia como el boxeador profesional que reinara durante más tiempo en toda la historia del boxeo profesional mundial! Las críticas, para otra ocasión muchachos…

 Además, Omar Narváez fue la excusa perfecta para que el queridísimo amigo puertorriqueño Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel –presidente de la OMB- estuviera de paso por Argentina. Cena de agasajo el jueves 19 por la noche con un selecto grupo de invitados y viaje a San Juan para asistir a una nueva defensa del “Huracán” de Trelew. Junto a los jueces de ring y al también gran amigo Jorge Molina –vicepresidente regional-, cómodamente instalados en el lujoso Del Bono Park Hotel, único 5 estrellas de la ciudad de San Juan, en la región de Cuyo de la República Argentina, hemos vivido un fin de semana de gran camaradería y distensión.

Charlas de toda índole, boxeo nacional e internacional, histórico, chistes, bromas, respeto y profesionalismo, todo mezclado en almuerzos y cenas que quedarán en la historia personal de quien escribe éstas líneas.

El máximo dirigente de la OMB, hasta se permitió bailar salsa en el restaurant Renattos de la capital sanjuanina o cantar karaoke, dando rienda suelta a su contagiante alegría caribeña. El propio “Paquito”, hombre fundamental en las chances argentinas desde aquella recordada pelea de Néstor Giovannini hasta ésta de Narváez, en donde se han consagrado con un título de la OMB, una buena parte de la historia argentina de boxeo profesional.

La misma OMB que naciera allá por 1988 –con la presidencia del dominicana Ramón Piña Acevedo- que decidieron separarse de la AMB ya que pretendían otro futuro para el boxeo profesional.  Esta OMB que apoyó, apoya y, seguramente, apoyará al boxeo argentino.

El mismo “Paco” que nos gasta bromas por éstas mismas notas que escribimos en ésta muy visitada –por suerte- página web de boxeo mundial, tratándonos de “poetas” del boxeo, en forma irónica –no hay necesidad de aclararlo- pero que nos halaga saber que las lee.

El mismo hombre al que escuchamos con atención sus comentarios, sus puntos de vista y sus enseñanzas, como uno de los hombres más influyentes en el mundo del boxeo actual.

 Dos grandes se juntaron en San Juan, cada uno de lo mejor en lo suyo. Don Omar y Don Paco pasaron por San Juan y allí estuvimos. Quedan enseñanzas, buenos momentos y parte de la historia del boxeo. No es poca cosa amigos.
